“And Switzerland is to the east of France and south of Switzerland we have..?”
“Excuse meh?”
“Master Aodhan, you know I feel nothing but affection for you, but your studies are on the table, not out the window.”
“I know, I'm sorry Kaori.”
Despite his discontent, at least they were still on a first name basis. Kaori hated being called Lady Hotaro all the time. It sounded so… stuffy.
Kaori could feel the child battling his desire to look out the window as he tried to look over the lesson plan Kaori had brought to the corner of the stuffy library. She hadn’t any problems doing lessons outside in the spring, summer and even autumn… It was just too bloody cold in the winter! Still Aodhan would much rather be outside in the fresh air playing instead of the stodgy old library. Kay blew a lock of hair that had slipped from her bun aside before looking to the child she was in charge of tutoring. He was an excellent pupil and sharp as a bloody tack, but there was rarely a child that would rather be inside on a fine day than outside, clever or no.
“As I was saying, Switzerland is to the east of France and south of Switzerland is…”
Aodhan started to think and slowly recited, "South o' Switzerland is… It-"
“Shh!” Kaori suddenly interrupted (and she noted she had interrupted the correct answer quite proudly). Her eyes were wide and her posture suddenly stiff, looking from side to side. “Did you hear that?”
“Hear wha'?” asked Aodhan, looking about with a little alarm.
“Quick hide!” Kaori whispered disappearing under the table in a flash.
Not a second later Aodhan followed her, his own eyes wide. “Hide from who?”
“Enemies are filtering in from all angles,” she said, looking about suspiciously.
“Wha' enemies?”
She pointed at a set of legs at a table far across the room. “There!” she whispered. Seeing some legs in the rows of books lining a nearby bookcase, she quietly said, “And there!” Hearing a small group of people coming in the door, she whispered, “How did they find us?”
Aodhan slowly started to realize the game for what it was… and then looked serious. “Are they Ainglish?”
“I’m not sure! But we need to escape.” She looked around and pointed at the door at the far corner of the room. “We need to get across the battlefield without being discovered.”
“It wo'nay be easy,” he said with narrowed eyes.
“Steal your courage, Master Aodhan! We can’t let them take us!” Receiving a silent nod, she whispered, “Wait for it… Wait for it…” Then just as the legs at the bookshelf rounded to the other side, she whispered. “Go!” Quick as a flash they darted to the next closest table, on all fours. “Go!” And they were at the next table. “Go!” Then the next. “Shh!”
They stopped there as a pair of legs started walking from the shelves in their direction. Kay watched with wide eyes as the person headed for their table, Aodhan, covering his mouth. The person hesitated, then walked right on past choosing a seat two tables down. Kaori and Aodhan exchanged a serious look. That had been too close!
“Go on without me! It’s too dangerous! You can get away more quickly without me!”
“I’m nay leavin' you!” he said, looking at her in shock.
“I’ll just get us caught! Save yourself!”
“You wo'nay get left behind!” he said, grabbing her shoulders and giving her a little shake.
Kaori let out a nervous breath but nodded. “Thank you for talking sense into me, soldier.” Aodhan looked rather proud for a second before Kaori whispered, “Go!” and off they were again. Seeing someone was seated at the last row of tables, they started to move across the room in the other direction quickly, Kaori only mouthing, “Go!” when she thought they were too close to the seated studier.
At last, they were under the table closest to the door. Whispering, Kaori said, “You’re quicker than me. Hurry and get behind that book case and tell me when the coast is clear!”
He nodded once and quick as a flash was behind the bookcase, his head peeking out as he scanned the room. One hand emerged and he held up one finger as if telling her to wait, and then suddenly motioned for her to come enthusiastically.
Kay crawled as quickly as she could, darting around him and moving to a crouched position before whispering, “Was I seen?”
“No, but next time move faster,” he said, still watching the room as if to make sure as Kaori covered her mouth to hide her laughter.
“We’re going to have to run for it,” said Kaori, already gathering up the hem of a dress that was stained from crawling across the library.
Aodhan nodded and quietly counted, “One… two… three!”
Both of them darted the short distance to the door, giggling at the shocked looks they got from everyone inside. Kay would go back for their work later. For now they had to get to the kitchen to find a victory snack![/color]
