Sleat
home of the clan "MacDonald of Sleat". The name comes from Sléibhte, Scottish Gaelic for a plain, which well describes Sleat when considered in the surrounding context of the mainland, Skye and Rum mountains which all dominate the horizon all about Sleat. The church at Kilmore is said to have been built by a priest called Crotach MacGille Gorm who was a canon of Beauly Abbey. It is believed that the site of Kilmore Church was a place of pagan worship before the Christian era. Some pagan rites are still practiced clandestinely nearby.
