The thunder resounded like a dull drum over the gray haven sky. It was midday but who could tell when the colors looked such an ugly color. The men were drenched, tending to the needs of the ship. Ealora herself was fairly dripping with the rain that had not stopped for three days time, she had been tending the helm since then, never sleeping. Hope drove her, hope that her quest would be coming to an end, hope that Vola had been wrong. Yet she could not bring herself to step away from the helm even as the men worked at tying the Storm to the docks of Paradise Point. The men were waiting, itching to go ashore. Moving from her place at the helm, she grasped the railing and looked out over her men.
"Take the wounded ashore so the healer might tend to them, then make merry tonight but be ready for battle on the morrow. Do not disappoint me or its your necks I'll have"
The boots scuffed and scurried to do as the Captain bid and to get out of her way. The last two faces she saw were Sam and Taylor who had dutifully avoided her for the remainder of that voyage.
"Sam...Taylor..you two stay behind..."She called and the two men stopped at the words and came to join her as she left the helm and gestured to her offices. She ushered the men inside first before closing the door behind her. She wouldn't say she was sorry for what she had said to them. They knew she still respected them. She still cared about them.
"So far, Captain brad's ship has not been spotted in the harbor. I want you two to disguise yourself and stay upon the docks, when he arrives, come and find me but don't let him see you."
Celadon eyes rose to meet the eyes of the two men. They both were looking at her with blank stares. what could the three of them say to each other after a standoff, with the knowledge that this could be the end of any of them. Her lips pressed together tight, she would not say goodbye, she never had, never would. It wasn't goodbye, as long as they survived this, and if they didn't, well there was always the afterlife. Grasping the handle of the door, she flicked her wrist and disappeared past the opening. She left them behind, she left the ship behind. For now.
A loan figure stood at the end of the docks, seeming to wait for her as she approached but even she in her state of mind could not help but smile as the silloute became clearer. The bearded gentleman with rounded belly returned the smile and opened his arms as if he were going to hug her, instead he clasped one hand upon her shoulder while the other grasped her hand and gave it a squeeze.
"Captain Malory, as I live and breath. Didn't think I'd ever see you come back to this place"His voice was pleasant, like a light chuckle that would not end. Not exceedingly gruff or dark.
"Nicodemus, Didn't think you'd stay once you had your fortune. At least that is what I thought when you charged me for my ship" Ealora replied with a smile as she gave his hand a shake.
Even the mans laugh was pleasant as he gave a pat to her back again and began to lead her up the rows of warehouses.
"Well she's stood the test of time I see. Well worth the money to build her. Tell me, what brings you back to this place.."He paused and turned sideways to look at her.
"Your not...in trouble...again are you?"The look on his face was worried, pained.
Ealora heart lurched in pain, so much so her eyes stung with the threat of tears. She gave a mild shake of her head, no but the look on his face filled her with dread.
"Nicodemus..."She started to speak but could not find to ask him. My son..what happened to my son. She was sure the question was written all over her face.
"Come with me..."
Nicodemus hand squeezed his hand upon her shoulder before releasing it and giving her backside a light tap which had Ealora wincing in pain.
Their graveyard was small, moderate compared to that of larger cities or even islands with a larger populace. Ealora felt rooted to the spot when he lead her there. Unable to follow past the gate even though he had moved through the rows of headstones. A few rows in, Nicodemus had paused and turned to wave her to him. Her feet were lead, her whole body weighted as she forced herself to move. Moving past headstones that blurred unknown names up at her. Only the one, it head the name clear as day. Even the writing etched within stone made her want to doubt what she was seeing.
Issa Malory Westenra
Slowly, she sank to her knees before the headstone. Her head ducked and her hand reached out to touch at the writing on the stone, only to see if it was real. They had given him her name along with their own. Her free hand sank to the earth, clawing it as the pain welled up within her anew. Her mouth opened as the pain threatened to consume her, but the scream wouldn't come, a strangled moan took its place as she fisted to the dirt with the one hand and felt the etches of her sons name with the other. The hand at her back made her flinch and jerk upward. Nicodemus stepped back, obviously shocked but understanding.
"Lola insisted he have your name. Good woman. Good people. Don't know who did it...lots of pirates left after they were killed though, suspect it was them. Can't blame pirates though, they ensure our survival. We just got to keep going."
Only at Nicodemus words did her head lift and she regarded the two graves on left side of her sons.
Lola Westenra and Harry Westenra
That bytch! Ealora teeth clenched in anger as she sat back upon her heels.
"I know who did it. I promise you, justice has been done. but don't you ever say you can't blame them...so many innocent lives lost to the likes of them."
Slowly she lifted from her place in the dirt and turned to watch the shipbuilder who shifted within the wet dirt beside her. The rain had slowed to a mist. Had he been a handsome man and she a woman with feeling, this would of been a rather awkward romantic moment. She was not a woman with heart though and she passed the shibuilder. She needed to see the priest...she needed to...
"Ealora, there was two of them. A man an a woman, we dun know who they were. Are you sayin you caught them? Ealora what have you done?!" His voice was panicked as he advanced on the retreating woman, grabbing her arm to spin her around.
"It's not for you to decide who should receive justice. This was out fight, our people murdered. We always been good to you people, let you make this a safe haven, what have you brought in on us? What are you plannin?!" He shook her as he spoke, he was angry, she could tell but she was likewise angry and her face was twisted in anger.
"A man and a woman?"She answered in reply and her face seemed to twist even more.
Nicodemus released her. He seemed to understand without her saying anything that she had not taken care of the matter completely by herself.
"Ealora..."He started.
Ealora was no longer paying attention, her face had turned to a figure approaching behind the ship builder. Sam came panting into sight and leaned over once he reached his Captain to catch his breath.
"He's...here.."He panted out between breaths.
Ealora turned celadon eyes to the shipbuilder then back to Sam.
"Good. Tell him I am here. Exactly where I am."She replied.
Sam looked at her in disbelief but the twist of her lips and he gave a final blow of air out of his mouth and nodded his head before turning back the way he came.
"Ealora what the hell are yo.."Nicodemus had started to speak but Ealora wave of hand and he stopped.
"Go into town, tell the High Lord that if he doesn't want innocent lives lost then to hide his people and keep out of my way. Tell him I have no qualms in taking innocent lives."She paused at the look of shock on the ship builders face,
"I'm a pirate. I don't give a damn about your people, just remember that" She finished as she turned and moved back to her sons grave. Slowly she sank to her knees and waited...for death, for redemption, for justice? It was unclear, but she waited all the same.
