All of the time that had passed so far in Skye, in Turas Lan, had been spent trying to get a grasp on her life. Ever since her near-death experience there had been times when sorrow would overtake her, awake and asleep. Luckily though she had come to make a few friends here, or at least she hoped. After her borrowing of the horse to follow a gentleman, who turned out to not be who she'd thought, she'd got to meet a lovely lady before returning home.
Once the horse that had been borrowed was returned, she had done some mending for the elderly gent and his sick wife. That had been the agreed upon payment for use of his horse and Liliana always kept her word. This had gained her their company on a few occasions when she'd left the Healing Hall to walk about the city. They had even, kindly, invited her over to eat with them. This had been heartily accepted from Liliana who had not had a homecooked meal in some time.
In truth, she was very lucky to have washed up near such a land. Here it seemed that kindness was in many hearts. She had not been forced to leaving the Healing Hall yet, though she was no longer in need of care, which Liliana was very grateful for. With no coin it would be hard to find shelter otherwise. To repay their kindness she had taken to aiding with menial tasks or keeping other patients company.
Having finally gained the courage, she had decided to approach the Lady Jelenah as suggested by Sir Kendrew. Her discussion with the man, quite an interesting and kind fellow, had stuck with her from the night she'd had the pleasure to meet the Duchess of Skye and learn the name of her rescuer, Aman-ud-Din. It had been quite a fascinating evening and since then she had aimed to learn more of Skye, and to not intrude upon private affairs.
Liliana's biggest deterent had been the issue of approaching the Duchess's Lady-In-Waiting while wearing the too big borrowed gown. It was not vanity that made her care about her appearance. Instead she just wanted to present herself well. One did not go to the castle of a Duchess and Duke while wearing unproper clothing! To her joy one of the healers, closer to her size, had loaned her a gown and slippers that she did not use anymore. It'd taken only a bit of adjustments, mending while she spoke with a sick little boy, to get the gown where she wanted it.
Now, she walked toward Griffin Castle, chocolate eyes taking in the sight of guards. Hands were folded at her waist, slim 5'5 form encased in a fitting gown the color of a peach, the skirt reaching her ankles and moving with each graceful step, and ebony hair, usually in a braid that hung down to her back, was swept up in a loose bun with a few whisps loose that refused to be tamed. All-in-all she looked very well put together. A smile would curve her lips as she paused in front of the guards, a curtsy given with ease, as she murmured,"Good day, sirs. My name is Liliana Marishka and I have come to request a meeting with the Lady Jelenah, Lady-in-Waiting to the Duchess, at the behest of Sir Kendrew."
If they even knew what it took to get those words out! She'd practiced them all night, even in her sleep!, and that she hadn't tripped over her tongue from nerves amazed her as she straightened.

The guards would nod to her then let her past while one of the two called for a page to come and escort her to where Jelenah could be found. The page would nod and smile, gesturing for her to follow. He would lead her to the castle, enter and then down several corridors and halls until the reached a the kitchen. The page stepped inside and made his announcement to Jelenah. "M'Lady Jelenah... there is someone here who wishes to speak with you. Lady Liliana Marishka." Jelenah was found sitting at a table before a pile of potatoes peeling and cutting them to ready them in an upcoming meal. Her dress looked much like that of one that was homespun, her hair of golden locks braided and resting over a shoulder. An apron on and a few stains to show she had been quite the busy helper today. Yes, most Lady's in waiting wouldn't be found doing such tasks but Jelenah was not the usual Lady. She was born to that of a farmer, use to working in both the soil and in a tavern as a chambermaid. The five foot five Slavic woman would stand to her feet, greet the woman with a smile and nod to the page to dismiss him. She came around the table and spoke. "G'day lady, how might I help you?" She asked as her hands were cleaned off on her apron. She then glanced over her shoulder. " You will have to excuse the mess I am in as one of the kitchen girls are sick and so they needed help." She added when looking back to Liliana and chuckled softly while waiting to hear what was needed of her.

A nod of 'thank you' would be given to both guards before she followed after the page. As she moved along the corridors, chocolate eyes taking in her surroundings curiously, she kept her hands clasped at her waist nervously. Now that she was actually inside she could feel the butterflies dancing about in the pit of her stomach and she fought the urge to bite her lip.
This was not a nervousness that she minded. It was perfectly normal to feel this way when approaching one about finding work. Ignoring it was all she could do. Making a mistake due to nerves would be embarassing or possibly mess things up. Stopping when the page did, she heard her name announced and as she stepped inside the kitchen her gaze would lock on the woman peeling potatos.
It was obvious to Liliana that the woman was being interrupted in the middle of work. Even in such a state the woman still looked quite lovely and radiated warmth. Realizing that she was being spoken to, and had quite possibly been staring quite rudely!, Liliana blushed slightly and murmured,"There is nothing to excuse, Lady Jelenah. Do you need some help?"
During her time working for Lady Mehar it had been most common to find Liliana in the kitchen when not about her other duties. Friendly warmth and chatter had always filled the chamber as servants went about preparing meals. She'd been glad to be of help and to be part of that circle.
Turning her mind back to the first question addressed to her, she gathered her courage and spoke,"Well, m'lady, I am looking for employment."
That was quite...blunt, was it not? Liliana hoped that it didn't sound rude. She just was not quite sure how else to phrase as that was honestly her reason for being here. Of course, she'd explain more if Jelenah asked it.

Jelenah would watch as it seemed the woman before her was suddenly lost in a world of her own. She would grin at that and when Liliana came back to present time she offered her help. "If you would like yes, by all means make yourself comfortable and let us talk on future employment." The golden haired Lady would say as she moved back to once again take her seat and resume in peeling and cutting up the mound of potatoes.
Once she began she looked to Liliana and asked. "What sort of work would you be interested in doing? Have you anything in mind?" She would pause there and give the woman a chance to answer those questions before asking her next one. "Have you any previous experiences with working with Ladies of a castle or along side other servants in a castle?"
These were things that needed to be known to better decide if Liliana was capable and suitable for work within these walls. Jelenah hoped she wasn't coming off as to disrespectful or such as she was still trying to get use to seeing to these sort of things. Already wheels were turning in her head with ideas on what the woman could do to help here. There were many things needed and surly she could help with one or more of the duties.

When her offer to help was accepted, Liliana's smile would widen and she'd nod as she took a seat to help in the peeling of potatos. One was picked up, knife gripped in the other hand, as she began to peel carefully. It was quite clear that she had done such before. The first time she had ever peeled potatos she'd ended up with a million tiny nicks all over her poor hands. It had been worth it though.
"At the moment I am willing to accept any work. I am new to Skye and being unemployed has required me to depend on others. I no longer wish to be such a burden. I had thought that I could be of use as a Lady-In-Waiting. If that is not to be though I am a quick learner," her soft voice filled with warmth as she spoke while keeping her hands busy.
She had done what she could to help in her own fashion and repay the kindness of those who had been so nice to her since her arrival. Yet, it did not feel like enough. Sometimes she felt like a burden and that would not do.
The last question was easier to answer, the tone she used making it obvious that she was one that would rather support herself than allow another to support her, "I have done such work before. I was Lady-In-Waiting and then Companion to a noble lady at one time. I did other work during my time with her as well and before that time I was a servant in a nobleman's household. I started doing such work when only about seven summers. I was taught the basics of reading, writing, and numbers during my time as a Companion..."
Left out was the fact that she knew how to dance. That was not needed to be spoke about as that time of her life had passed. No longer did she feel safe enough to do such. Not after what had taken place. Forcing her thoughts back to the present, she'd pick up another potato to peel and wait for the Lady Jelenah to take in her words. Part of Liliana wondered if it were possible to expand upon her education in this land of Skye. It had always been something she'd wanted to do, but had never been able to.

Jelenah would watch with those blue sapphire like eyes as Liliana made herself comfortable and began helping with the potatoes. Slowly she would nod as she listened to the woman reply and give her answer. Her eyes left Liliana and focused more at the task she was doing, being careful not to cut herself. Both her soft leather wrist protectors had been removed and put aside. They were different from the usual. Most covered just the wrist alone, these were almost like a half glove. Thumbs were looped with the material covering the lower portion of her palm and down to mid forearm. The leather was soft, velvet like and she wore them to hide the scars of a past life. Others here at the castle only thought her to were them for other beneficial reasons, not knowing of the small woman's past. Very few knew of it and even so, some didn't understand her fear still. As Jelenah listened to Liliana more, slowly she began to smile and nod. It was just as she thought. Indeed this young woman would serve well to both the Duchess and her as a Lady In Waiting. Liliana would be a good woman for such a position and the more she shared of past experiences, the more this was confirmed. Jelenah would take a moment to pause, look to Liliana and smile. "Then a Lady In Waiting you shall be. Though I will ask that you follow me for a time, become more familiar with the castle and the servants before you are given to see duties on your own." Her head tilted and she wondered if the woman would be a bit surprised with how easy Jelenah had come to her decision. The fair haired handmaiden was a pretty good person when it came to judging people where it mattered most. Lilana had told her of her abilities, her skills and from what Jelenah could see, she was very well mannered. A good representation of what a Lady could be considered as and not like someone by the name of Anna Marie. "We will see that you get the things needed. Clothes, shoes, and other personal items to add with that to which you already have. (assuming she had such things.) I will also see that you have chambers of your own and once there, should you have need of anything, please, do not hesitate to ask for them. Alright?" Jelenah asked with a sweet smile. The Slavic woman was a warm friendly person and was starting to re-emerge. So many good things had happened recently and restored her faith in people that the change had become a topic for gossip among the servants. Something Liliana would quickly learn about and hopefully ignore like she and the Duchess tended to do. Everyone had secrets, no matter your name, position or title. It was simply up to life whether those secrets would soon become revealed to all others or remain a mystery to be discovered only by those closest to you. As another potato was taken up, Jelenah glanced from it to Liliana and added. "You will have access to many rooms, such as the Chambers of both the Duchess and the Duke at times. The library, the chart room and several others." She chuckled some and added. "If ever you need me and are unsure as to where to find me, I am usually in one of three places. With the Duchess, with my beloved, or within the library." If education was something of the importance to Liliana, Jelenah could help her with that some herself, as well as direct her to seek other needed things from Eirian who was the Lady Artisan or even Lady Kaori who is now the High Scholar. Sir Caden had already been under the guidences of Eirian, Aodhan would soon be under Kaori and if Liliana wanted, she could do the same with either if not both. All she would have to do would inquire, be it from Jelenah or another within the castle and what was needed to be known would be shared.

The tall man in robes of black and gold entered the kitchen and wandered to the doorway, where the two women sat discussing employment. Their backs were to the Duke, and knowing him, he said nothing to announce his presence. With that usual smirk accompanying the curly brown hair. he leaned against the doorsill and listened.
His smile widened. "Employment? The girl has grit... to assume she could get employment in the castle vice anywhere else... she knows how to use the situation at hand that's for sure..." he thought.
Bess definitely had beautiful women about her... all the Ladies-in-Waiting had the looks, and the figures, to seduce any man. It was a testimony on his part not to be seduced by such beauty, but hey, it was great to look. His love for Bess was the strongest emotion he had ever felt... and his duty as Lord of the Isles definitely kept him busy... still the lovers made time for each other.
His mind wandered back to the present and he watched the two women. Graceful beauty, able to work their way about a kitchen...
It was one of the rare occasions that Lord Adam took to relax and tease... things had been tense lately with the Chamberlain and their pasts catching up to them, the freedom fight of Ulster, and the taunt relationship with Avaria over the pirate.... but still Adam took the time to tease his best friend Jelenah... at least he hoped she was his friend... especially after all they had been thru.
Then he walked softly up behind the pair, leaning over Jelenah, two actions simultaneous, taking a piece of potato and kissing her neck... "How is that old beloved of yers..." he chuckled. "Yae shall break mae 'eart when yae ask faer marriage..." he teased and bit off a piece of raw potato... looking to the new woman, he simply winked and smiled.

Those words played over in her mind, words of approval, and she'd pause for a moment in the peeling of a potato to stare in stunned silence. Liliana had not quite expected it to be this easy. Though it was not a guarantee, as there was always room for error if she were to mess up while following the Lady Jelenah, it was still a chance. And that was all Liliana had truly wanted.
After a moment she'd begin the work of peeling again, chocolate eyes lowering from Jelenah's face to the work, and she'd murmur softly,"Of course, I do not mind following. I have to learn the lay of the land so to speak. I don't want to be getting lost when bringing tea to the Duchess."
Head would lift briefly, humor sparkling in her gaze, and she'd listen to Jelanah as she continued to speak. A nod would be given at important intervals, words spoken occasionally,"I do not have much in the way of garments or belongings. I may just need a bit to see me through until I can get more on my own." That she'd be moving to the castle was acknowledged. Liliana realized that she would miss being in the company of those in the Healer's Hall, but that was tempered by the excitement of this new chapter in her life. "Everything sounds wonderful, Lady Jelenah."
The places that she spoke of being a found brought a smile to her friendly face,"They sound like pleasurable places to be. I used to spend my time in the library or in the kitchens helping when not about duties. Or sometimes in the garden dancing..." Her words would trail off at the approach of a man she did not recognize. Though perhaps she should have? She had not a clue.
Chocolate eyes would look from Jelenah to him, brow raised. Amusement would appear on her face as he'd snag a potato like the children's servants had at Lady Mehar's manor, laughter in her tone,"Tsk tsk you will ruin your appetite, sir."

Jelenah would nod and chuckle a bit to Liliana when she spoke of not wanting to get lost. Another nod was afforded as the young woman spoke of needing only a few things to get her started for now and earn more as days past. Everything did sound wonderful, even to the Lady In Waiting as things were going very well she thought. Jelenah glanced to Liliana and smiled with her reply. "They are very pleasant places to be indeed, places I hope you find just as enjoyable as I."
The golden haired woman would lift her sapphire like eyes as the young womans words trailed off and there was the feel of a kiss placed to her neck. Her reaction was normal as could be and the space between shoulder and neck grew less as she scrunched up with a shy smile. The voice belonged to Adam, indeed a dear friend. Her eyes lifted as she watched his hand reach over her form and draw up a potato to enjoy. Pink flushed her cheeks as she glanced from him to Liliana and back before giving her reply.
"My beloved is well..." Her own words trailed, not sure if Bess had informed him of the news just yet. "And yes.. perhaps your heart will break then as Balian has asked for my hand in marriage. I accepted and your wife, the Duchess has granted permission." She offered up her hand to show Adam the ring of silver and the stone of blue sapphire shaped like that of a heart. Jelenah would chuckle softy then with the wink he gave to Liliana and this is where she would introduce the two. "Liliana, this is the Duke, Lord Adam Aberdeen and M'Lord, this is Lady Liliana Marishka. She has come to seek employment here at the castle."
Jelenah gave the pair a moment to meet gazes, perhaps speak to each other before continuing. "And Liliana... please... no need for formalities... I have never been one to grow accustom to it so Jelenah will simply do." She said with a warm genuine smile. Her attention returned to Adam a moment and she bit at her bottom lip. "There is something that I would like to ask of you M'lord and I suppose now is as good a time as any."
The Slavic woman would release her hold on both knife and vegetable before wiping her hands clean on the apron about her form. She turned to him fully then and asked him her favor. She knew it was best to do such things in private but much had kept both Duke and Duchess busy, finding time to catch them was not easily had. "M'lord... Adam... I would ask the favor that in my fathers absence, you would give me away on the day I am joined to Balian." Jelenah hoped he would accept as there was no other man in her life she thought more fitting for such a thing as all her family were deceased and there were none close to her like Adam.
The small fair haired Lady would quickly add before he had a chance to fully answer. "I intend to ask Bess to do the same... it would be an honor to have you both at my side on that day." She glanced down before looking to him again, that terrible habit of fidgeting with her clothing arose as she was slightly nervous with a forth coming answer. "I understand should you need more time to think on it and give your answer then."

His smile quirked at the lass, Liliana... "Tis seems my appetite for many things is difficult tae spoil..." then he winked at Jelenah as one hand rested upon her shoulder, the other holding the piece of potato...
He enjoyed the pink blush that was highlighted by her gold hair and blue eyes. Then he pretended to pout... "Then mae 'eart breaks as yu say those harsh words... and betrayed by mae own wife..." he chuckles... "How dare she give such permission to mae favorite lass..."
His hand taking hers as he examines the ring... fine workmanship for such a knight's wages..." he teased as he kissed the back of her hand.
Her introductions were brief as he bowed to Lady Liliana... "Welcome tae Turas Lan M'Lady... Ah dae hope yer choice was the best yae couldda made..."
All teasing aside, he sidestepped to look at Jelenah fully... his concentartion completely upon her... he simply bowed his head. "Ah need nae time tae think it over... Ah would bae proud tae give ye away in yer Father's absence... t'would be mae pleasure... " then he winked at Liliana, once again teasing Jelenah... "T'would bae right since Ah cannae have ye, best give ye away..." then he could restrain no longer and chuckled... then he smacked her hand lightly... "Quit fidgettin' M'Lady, tis too easy a target tae pick on..."
"In all seriousness... Ah would bae proud tae give yae away... though best bae doin' it afore, or after, we go tae Aberdeenshire..."

As conversation passed between the two Liliana went about the peeling. That smile would remain on her lips as she decided that the two were obviously good friends. Such banter was not something one made with only an acquaintance. When Jelenah would show the ring to the man, Liliana's own gaze would move over it thoughtfully. It was beautiful indeed.
"I wish you and your betrothed much joy in your upcoming nuptials, Jelenah. Such a joyous occasion." It did not take a good friend though to wish happiness on her upcoming marriage. Liliana wanted everyone to experience the joys of life and the union of love was one of the greatest in her opinion. True love was most rare, but when you found it it was said to never fade.
When Jelenah introduced them a light blush would stain her copper cheeks and she'd clear her throat. She had chastised a Duke! The Duke! Luckily her mind had been put to ease by his response earlier. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Your Grace." A light curtsy, after putting down a potato, would be given before she'd straighten fully. There was conviction and hope in chocolate eyes as she'd state quietly,"I have indeed made the best choice."
Catching Jelenah's words, Liliana would go quiet as curiousity passed from Adam to the lady-in-waiting. That the woman was nervous made Liliana instinctively give a soothing smile. For some reason she had the insane urge to clap with joy when the man answered in a positive manner, but instead restrained herself to a warm glance between the two. Friendship and love. The woman was blessed indeed. A silent prayer would be stated, asking that nothing interrupt Jelenah's happy occasion or the plans beforehand.
A light giggle would pass her lips, sympathizing with the fidgeting woman, and she'd murmur,"I was tempted to do that much on the way to the castle. Nerves make your hands move in ways your mind tells them not to. Sometimes it is best to sit on them when asking questions of much importance."

Jelenah chuckled as Adam jested and teased both she and Liliana. The golden haired hand maiden was chuckling more as Adam spoke on how his heart was broken and how he had been betrayed by his wife. "Oh.. M'lord.. I am sure M'Lady Duchess will keep you better company than I. I hear you prefer the more ripe women over young ones such as myself. So I do not think all is lost for you." She jested back as he looked over the ring. Jelenah nodded in agreement with how it was a fine piece of workmanship.
The small Slavic woman was pleased to see that Liliana seemed to be at ease upon meeting the Duke himself. However, Adam was quick to answer her inquire about him giving her away to Balian. An answer that was most welcomed and she sighed with relief. Jelenah glanced to Liliana then as Adam had only for their eyes to meet for more of his teasing. Jelenah chuckled. "Oh M'Lord.. stop.. really ..." But then eyes went wide with the slap to her hand as Adam teased her about fidgeting. "I am sorry... it is a habit..." She replied with a small fit of giggles.
Jelenah tilted her head though as if to inquire more about when she and Balian should chose a date. A date before or after Aberdeen as Adam pointed out. "Why Aberdeen M'Lord and how does it concern me? Am I to be going as well or is this a trip for you and the Duchess alone?" As she awaited Adama reply, her blue sapphire eyes shifted to Liliana. The woman spoke on well wishes for her and Balian and Jelenah smiled as she replied softly. "Thank you Liliana... it means a great deal to me... to us."
The Lady In Waiting watched as Liliana and Adam became more acquainted with one another. Then Liliana spoke on her fidgeting and Jelenah smiled shyly. "I have always had the habit of doing so when nervous or so... it is not nearly as bad now as it once was." She said with a light chuckle before nodding and then in jest to add more humor to the topic, she did indeed sit on her hands. It was brief but funny... Jelenah would stand then seeing as her share of potatos was done. "Liliana.. feel free to stay and speak with M'Lord Adam but I must be off to go and see to some things. My apologies... should you wish to come along in a few moments you can find by asking around."
She nodded to Liliana and then stepped closer to Adam to place a chaste kiss to his cheek. "Thank you for accepting... I am honored you accepted. I will speak with both you and M'Lady Duchess soon about a future date and preperations." Jelenah would bid them both good bye for now and move off to go and see to other things for the time being. Knowing that soon she and Liliana would meet up again and begin to get things in order for her to start work here within the castle.

Listening to Jelenah and watching her blush made him smile, the cheekbones moving as usual as he started to retort.... "Aye, M'Lady Bess daes 'ave a way tae keep mae sated..." he smirked watching them both blush... "Nay, Ah would call it ripe, but experienced... she may nay like ripe..." he winked... "But the young lasses dunnae'ave the experience I require... but...with the young lasses 'bout, daes keep things a mite interesting..." he once again teased, indicating Liliana...
Jelenah's inquiry as to Aberdeen was quickly responded... "Aye, the Lady and I will be going to Aberdeen to search her past, to hopefully find answers to personal questions on the mind. The old Chamberlain has resurrected some questions..." he looks to Jelenah... "The Duchess shall require a Lady-in-Waiting... if not yu, then who?" he inquires of her... with only a small quick glance to Liliana.
With Jelenah's apologies and her reasons for leaving, he bowed slightly... "Have a great day M'Lady... Mae apologies faer taking up yer valuable time..." casting a glance to Liliana... "Ah bae sure the lass kin offer mae 'nother piece o'potato..." winking at the lass... "And able tae offer some company tae an OLD man..."
Adam was five and thirty... far past middle aged for the times, but still a fit and trim man worthy of warrior stature... Here the Lord of the Isles stood in the kitchen, chewing on a piece of raw potato, the only thing that set him apart from the kitchen help was his black and gold robes of the Griffin...

Laughing softly when Jelenah sat on her hands, she'd grin wider. Liliana's gaze would pass between the Duke and the Lady-In-Waiting as they spoke of a possible date, completely missing the glance from the Duke at the mention of a Lady-In-Waiting for the Duchess and Duke's trip, she focused on peeling some more. Their banter and comfortable attitude brought warmth that effectively killed any leftover butterflies that had taken wing in her stomach.
Nothing seemed to solidify the words she had spoken to the Duke earlier more than this moment. It had been the best choice.
Lifting her head as Jelenah excused herself, she'd smile softly in the woman's direction,"Thank you much for speaking with me today, Jelenah."
Liliana knew that at some point she would have to leave as well, if only to get what few belongings she had and bring them back to the castle and say her farewells to those at the hall. Though she would, for sure, see them again. It was not like she was moving away. Skye was her home now.
The Duke's words brought a light flush to Liliana's cheeks, bringing her from her thoughts, and laughter would pass her lips as chocolate eyes would meet his own gaze,"Outward age does not make one old or young. It is the spirit of the person that does so."
Liliana had met children with innocence destroyed by the effects of their world whose spirits were much older than the Duke's seemed to be. Finished peeling her potato, she'd place a piece on the table near where the Duke stood with a wink,"So you do not have to steal from your own kitchens."

Adam chewed the potato and smiled as Jelenah departed, leaving Liliana and Adam alone in the kitchen. Her words of wisdom made him smile. "Aye lass, spirit doth make a life worthwhile... and tis seems that Ah 'ave 'nuff for more'n mae share..." he winks at her.
"Have yae met the Duchess? Bess is a good woman... and she too has spirit... Ah guess dats wot it takes for Skye to move forward..." as he leaned on the counter.
Chuckling, he swallowed the potato and picked up yet another... Angling it toward her... "Thank yae M'Lady... Get settled in the Castle and then see what M'Lady Bess has for ye..."
That said, Adam winked at the beautiful lass and turned from the kitchen.

"I have actually had the pleasure to meet the Duchess." Liliana would quietly finish peeling her last potato and listen to him as he talked of his wife. Her smile widening,"You two compliment each other well then I'd say. Skye seems lucky to have two rulers with such lively spirits."
Giving a nod, wiping her hands on a cloth on the counter, she'd murmur,"I hope that giving you them doesn't make you eat less of the meal." Returning the wink, she'd laugh softly and watch him turn to leave. "Have a good day, sir."
Figuring that it was time to go and get what belongings she had at the hall, Liliana would look around. Leaving the kitchen and finding someone to leave a message with to let Jelenah know that she'd be back in an hour. Heading away from the castle and toward the hall with a bounce in her step. Success!

There are pieces to a puzzle that can go missing. We aren't aware of the absence until we step back, looking at the completed work, to find out that what we thought was whole before now is that very thing we strove for. Turas Lan couldn't lose her ability to mystify the most able solver of problems. Like looking at a staind glass window, the riot of color detracts from the true image until at one moment...it makes sense.
That was the timeless, prudent logic on which Sir Kendrew recommended to Lady Jelenah the colorful, witty young woman to become the second handmaiden to the Duchess, and thus form a group of three. Three to laugh, three to jest. Three to face the rising waves of society together and keep one another satisified in merry company. No one of dull nature could last long in service, nor could the witless last long near Beathag. Liliana Marishka was neither dull or without her senses. He could thank God that he made a good choice, that Jelenah agreed.
That Beathag was happy. A novelty, really. A coveted prize - the hearty laugh, the smile that pulled at the age signs on her eyes, and a brash presentation of self to say that she trusted you enough to be at her utmost sense of famous earnest. The ability seemed to lay in: all children but namely her son, her family, the rare few called friends, and the bold by nature.
Beathag couldn't say if Liliana were any of these things but what made her find her fetching thus far was that she'd manage to secure the beginnings of her occupation when she was in the heat of a temper. In the midst of a black brewding period, she'd managed to obey every edict given while still seeking after what she needed. That was an admirable quality.
As it was, some time passed since the night where she faced the bohemoth of a woman toward the time Jelenah's gentle ways and Kendrew's council gave her a place in the castle to call her own. In this way she could perform her tasks while observing, and even now a moment called for such:
White skirts cavorted freely over the underpinnings of green. Through the slit splits, one saw the soft velvet leaping up over the ankles toward the knee. Regal attire for a chase with the Lord Aodhan! He of the finely combed hair, the little tunics to match his father, was scooped up squeeling in his mother's arms. The pair would do this with no seeming care that they were seen, as if they were the only people in the world.

"That smells wonderful." Preparations for the noon meal were already being made, even at such an early hour the castle kitchens were never still and as soon as fast was broke by those who wished it in the dining area then it moved onto lunch and dinner after that. It was not uncommon to find Liliana in the kitchens helping where she could when not needed by Bess or Jelenah. Since that first day, when she had acquired her position here within the castle walls, she had taken a liking to the warm and pleasant atmosphere of the kitchens.
A smile would flash her way from one of the servants and Liliana would return it with one of her own before finishing kneading the dough for the pastries to be baked. Sounds from the hallway brought the swiveling of heads in the direction of the doorway, joy alight in eyes and warmth in smiles, and Liliana was not left out of that. Bess and Aodhan.
Wiping flour covered hands on a cloth, not even considering the fact that she had managed to get some of it on copper-skinned cheeks and the tip of her nose!, she would move away from the table and toward the door to push it open slightly with one slim hand. Head would peek around the wooden structure, the ebony hair pulled back in a secure bun at the nape of her neck, and the flour covered apron she wore over the simple gown of amber just barely saved the material from being dirtied too. Yet, Liliana did not care as she let warmth fill her soul at the pleasant sight of Bess playing with little Aodhan.
There was much love between Mother and Son, showing in the way they played about the halls without a single care of it being frowned upon, and that love filled those within the walls with much happiness. It seemed as though one could never feel despair or sorrow when in the presence of such love, and when the Duke was present the power of it was even more.
Grinning wider, the smile lighting chocolate eyes, she'd step out from around where she had been peaking, to tease softly,"I see that you two are about to make sure all in the castle are awake."

"Och, aye. Aodhan's far more reliable than the crow o' a rooster ye know," she grinned, tickling the belly of the boy. Her fire. Aodhan meant such. It was a kingly name for a boy who deserved the world at his feet, "Aodhan, say good mornin' tae Mistress Liliana.." Manners were of the utmost when meeting a woman of any station. Gods willing, he would have better manners than both parents! The little lord waved, offering a good morning with a shy smile. Once he was comfortable with her, watch! He'd gab for hours, and even now began, "Mistress Lil-i-ana," the name was long and so he tried as best he could, "Did ye gae to the kitchen. Mum and I were goin' there to make bread for Papa. He likes the kind with raisins in it n' honey. Mum makes the best."
Her family was the first thought of the morning and the last thought in the evening. His nurse could barely contain his exuberance when the door opened, allowing him to run but a few doors down the hall to be allowed into the arms of his parents. His skin was flush with a richer, huskier tone than his mothers. Indeed, rumor proved true for he was born of Nubian blood and Adam's heir by adoption. But his eyes, the lowlights of gold and the graduation to a darker blonde were the gift of his mother. Two pairs of green eyes looked to Liliana. Beathag's laugh rang out as she put down the boy so he stood well near her waist. Quite tall for five!
"Dun brag now lad," though she beamed with pride,"why dun ye get on in n' see if Elise has some dough for ye tae play with from the mornin' bread." He dashed off where Liliana had just come from, that magical place where he was allowed to dip his finger in the bowl, if he was good! Beathag was guilty of harboring her loves and loyalties with a fierce intensity; nothing, but nothing could melt the esteemed woman's unshakable resolve like a child. If that were so, Aodhan had the key to ruining her completely. She laughed, turning again to the Lady in Waiting, "How find ye the castle thus far mah dear?"

"As I can tell. The castle could use a bit of waking in the morning, I say." Giving a wink to Aodhan, she'd smile wider and look between Mother and son. Both were lovely. The boy would indeed grow up to steal many a heart and be strong, and wise, like both his parents. Though Liliana had no doubt that the child was not of the Duke's blood, as the coloring was different and he had Bess's eyes, it was not something that mattered or figured in her thinking. The boy was the Duke's in every way that mattered from what she had seen.
The wave and the shy smile caused an endearing tug on her heart, warmth lighting her chocolate eyes until they seemed to glow amber, and she'd curtsy just for him,"Good morn to you, Lord Aodhan." As she stood, hearing the way he spoke her name brought a smile, and she'd crouch down so as to be more his height. "Indeed I was just mixing dough. I imagine the cook could be talked into making some bread for your Papa with some smiles from a handsome young man," Winking at him playfully, she'd then glance to the door and then to Aodhan again as she leaned in.
In a whisper, though positive Bess would be able to hear it, she'd murmur,"I believe the cook was readying to make some tarts for the noon meal. Oh, and Lord Aodhan, I'd be honored if when not having to be formal you would call me Lili."
It was a much easier name to pronounce than Liliana and would do for informal situations. Rising as the little one made for the kitchen, chocolate gaze following him, before looking back to the Duchess. "He is a an adorable child." Bess and Adam were both lucky to have such a son. That question from the Duchess brought a slight furrowing of her brow and a bit of a laugh,"Well, I am finding it quite...large, to say the least. Though I've only managed to get lost once and it's likely not to be the only time for that to happen."

The castle quite large? That was what she'd said the first month of living in it. How did one need or use so many rooms? In time she grew fond of the old structure, adding the marks of the family now residing in it against the lords of other ages. Chuckling, she offered a hand to Liliana's shoulder, "Aye. Tis imposin' but ye will soon know ye way around. Just remember in which way ye started from n' all else ought beh fine." Tar-thick, stew heavy brogue in the morning. She had not been awake long, nor had engaged in bouts of public speaking to soothe the timbre down. She had a feeling, though, she was understood with Liliana.
Aodhan made himself right at home in the kitchen. Cuffing her sleeves she had intent of doing just the same thing. Love was the make of all things, the foundation to erect upon. Love of a nation, of a way of life, of a few people built what was known around them. Year after year may it endure forever.

Thick indeed! That brogue was hard to wade through, but Liliana was growing more and more used to it. So it was not a surprise that she understood Bess even now. Laughing softly, opening the door into the kitchen for the Duchess to go inside,"I pay attention to every detail now. That way I can remember where I've been in hopes of getting back."
Once Bess inside, she'd follow and let the door close behind them. A smile would be flashed in Aodhan's direction as feet took her back to her spot at the table to help fashion it into the tarts that would be made to soothe the urge for something sweet with a meal. Chocolate eyes would watch Bess with a grin, cloth used to clear a spot on the table a bit and an apron passed in her direction with one slim hand.
"To help protect your gown a bit." Liliana knew there was very little hope of keeping it completely clean.

Beathag took the apron, bobbing her head as the grin pulled back her lips. The smile - when it came true - was brilliant. It was hard not to notice or be uplifted by it. When she sorrowed the world went back but when she smiled even the most sardonic among the court found a piece of happiness. "Thank ye," she said, tucking the cloth in the waist belt after tying it firmly in place.
A bowl was acquired, ingredients, and as if it were a second nature the Duchess began to start the work for one of her raisin current and honey loaves while looking over the sausages. It was another moment as yet another person realized - the Duchess was a hearth and home stock sort. She missed having say over her own hearth, a fire, and the small intimate setting of a home. But it wasn't to be so she made do with the infinite excess. The last time she had such company while she cooked was with Wilhemia, and she clung to such company though wouldn't say so aloud.
"Sae now, wot 'ave ye been daein n' wot is yer favorite thing to do in the kitcheny, Liliana?"

Post by Sir Kendrew Campbell on Sept 18, 2008 14:55:05 GMT -6
To start anew was to begin agan; the freshness of a place with no blemish that with an unbridled zeal a person could write a new chaper of life. So it was in the days following the arrival of Liliana in to service that Kendrew could not help but notice the changes that took place. It was his place to notice things because he kept a place beside the Duchess no one could fill. He could not for every servant who took up a place beside their sovereign, but with no doubt he could say that a bit of instinct on his part and the forward nature of Liliana on her own made a whole. Jelenah cared for Beathag in a nature that made her akin to a saint in his eyes, comparing her to a sister that was lost. In turn, Beathag allowed her hands to do what no one's seemed to do. What of Liliana? There was a way about her that made Beathag laugh more, provoked thought, and complimented Beathag's earnest. She roamed in rooms that seemed to hold no place for her and found a purpose.
Neither women was far from the Duchess' company, and Liliana made a pressing habit to go beyond the herald of her common tasks to provoke a sense of high respect when she stood in on matters of state and dared in her newness to brooch personal concerns. There was something that brought out the tenderness in the Hound within Beathag, and in turn brought out the strength of a woman who thought she had none as a result. It made him, too, miss other presences. Wilhemia, Aislin. The castle was lax in their absence but at least this one livened it again. Then again, he had a personal bias.
Liliana held his heart in the palm of her small hands, God help him.
"Tis been a month now," he passed her as she was in a group of other women, off to some task, "Since you've come, if not longer. What think you on the matter so far?" He lifted his hand, the women sheepish giggles and swoons as he placed it out for Liliana to take.

Life seemed full of surprises, of miracles, of new starts for weary souls. None knew what would come in life when the sun rose in the sky, but to have hope of a good future- that was all one needed. At least, Liliana hoped so.
Moving along the hall, discussing cleaning instructions with the other women, among other things, Liliana smiled and laughed. At one time she had thought her smiles would never come again. When captive aboard a ship, life in the hands of a deranged lunatic, it is hard to think happy thoughts. Liliana had thought her fate was to die, but apparently that was not so.
No, instead fate had deemed she was to live. That she would get a chance at a decent life, to know the strength of a courageous woman and know the love of a good man. Kendrew had brought life back to her heart and Beathag had taught her how to be strong even when it seemed impossible.
At the sound of that familiar voice, Liliana would turn and offer a sweet smile, hand slipping into his as she stepped away from the giggling women. "Go about your work, ladies." Giving them a playful wink, she'd watch them head off.
"I think, Kendrew, that Skye was where I was meant to be. What think you?"
