The Illuminati is a group of Catholic Priests who is supposed to protect the old ways and enforce Papal law. As their name envokes, they are supposed to pave the way for people to be illuminated in the righteous path of God. But they are a group of fanatics… extremists… murderers and assassins at the whims of the Pope… They have been hunting Templars and Merovingian ancestors for years. Of course, not publically…
Beneath the veil of Catholic power and Protestant influence, the Illuminati has been at war with the Templars… both sides suffering losses… but the group has one advantage… they can move about without persecution and obtain resources as required; whereas the Templars must utilize their own resources…
Merovingians were a family of priest-kings from France, in the Rennes-le-Chateau region. They were enigmatic, long-haired fellows who all shared the same birthmark - a red cross on their shoulder. They even claimed that they were descendents from Christ and Mary Magdelen. They were betrayed and murdered by the Catholic Church who replaced them with the Carolingian dynasty. The Merovingians may not have ruled, but they still had power… especially since every Carolingian king starting with Charlemagne married a Merogivian princess.
A courtesan referred to a mistress and/or as a trained artisan of dance and singing, especially one associated with wealthy, powerful, or upper-class men who provided luxuries and status in exchange for her companionship.
Odis Schleitz was once one of the Pope's honor guard. He often spent the time with the Courtsan that accompanied the Pope; acting as her guard and guide upon the noble and holy soil. It came to him a missive from the Pope himself and two of his advisors. He was to take the lovely little Courtsan - Brittany - away, it was his task to keep her safe.
And while the young woman protested horribly, the Pope married off his Lover to his loyal guard. While indeed Odis had fancied the woman since the day he had seen her, Brittany had no love at all for the "simple" guard. Yet even she knew she placed herself in insurmountable danger if she remained in Rome -especially due to the pregnancy.
The politics are wretched and devious, even those dealing with something as holy as the Mother Church. There were some that were suspicious of the sudden marriage and release of the Lead Guard. However by the time they had attempted to discover what it was… the couple were gone. Many times bounty hunters have sought out the couple for the information was leaked of the pregnancy. What better way to bring down the Church and its leader but to bring the child to the public eye?
Odis kept an ear open in Rome, until it became too dangerous as his "wife and child" were taken finally out of Italy all together to find them a safe place to hide them. He had some difficulties with Brittany through the pregnancy... however he had to keep up the facade wherever they went as a man supporting his family. When he took them to Germany to hide among one of the tiny farming villages, Brittany slipped into a dreadful melocholy.
Odis thought perhaps a visit from one of her old friends from Rome would do her well, yet he was not aware that the friend brought the wickedness with her. A vial of poison was left behind... and while Willa believes it is a plague that killed her mother... it was certainly better for her to believe this, then to know she gave up on the dreary simple life with the parties and life of luxury. Only two know the truth… Odis and Augusta.
Odis continues to keep Willa away from Italy and those of the church for fear someone will recognize her and see in her features the face of the Pope.
