Waternish, the north central peninsula, is narrow, no more than a few miles separate east coast from west at its widest point, and it reaches less than 8 miles in length. Waternish consists of mostly rocky shoreline, with high ground down a central ridge of land. Towns - Dunvegan, Edinbane, Trumpan, and Carbost Dunvegan Castle Edinbane is a village of about 150 people of various trades and is a merchant center. The name An t-Aodann Bàn is said to be taken from the white bog cotton plants that can be found on the hill sides. Clan McLeod took the care to ensure that there was a tradesman from each of the important crafts to sustain the needs of the village. Portree is port a settlement with a fine deep harbour. Its name derives from Port Ruighe, 'slope harbour', or Portrigheadh - 'port of the hillside'. The settlement's original name was Kiltragleann, ‘the church of St. Talarican in the glen'.
