Waves rolled the ship, the lightning to the west gave ominous warnings of what was yet to come… men, lowered by ropes, worked frantically on the steerage. A storm approaching, 30 miles from a coast... As the wind increased, so did the pitch of the ship.
Adam and Dmitrii leaned over the railing to see how the work was progressing. Cannon were strapped down in preparation for what the dark clouds and wind promised. Looking to his best friend, he spoke with a calm, eerie-toned voice. “Twas expected m’friend… Ah shouldda figgered mae luck as such... Bess home, sufferin’ theru the loss… Ah should bae dere tae comfort her…” But who comforted him… was he the cold-hearted bastard many took him for?
“It will be alright M’Lord. We can still make port tomorrow night… the men shall have this fixed in no time. Who could know the shaft would break on us?” Dmitrii gave Adam an unlikely brotherly pat upon the broad shoulders, laying his hand upon one, his arm about the man. He knew Adam was grieving at the loss of Edme… coupled by the circumstances of his absences during war and now in peace. He knew the man almost lost his wife and grieved so, now once again the man turned it inward. Just how much could one man and woman give for their country?
He winced at first, the hand upon his shoulder… then he gave a faint smile to his friend. “Aye, yae ‘r right Dmi… but sae much time away from Bess and Aodhan… away from my own land… ‘re we daein’ de right thing for Skye? If’en we nay lay claim tae our duties, the Clan Leaders will put us right back in the Dark Ages… Come m’friend… Ah need tae show yae sumthin’…”
The two men walked back to Adam’s cabin… Inside, the Duke took a heavy oak box with ornate carvings… opening it he began to show Dmitrii the scrolls. “Here is the treaty with Norway… and the Germanic Empire… and Castille’s…” then he held up a larger scroll… “This is the money agreement, establishing the Griffon as currency for the world as we know it… signed by all the leading countries…”
Dmitrii looked upon the months’ work Adam had accomplished and smiled… “Da M’Lord… ye did good… “ nudging him… “I never expected ya so wit with tongue…” then he gave a questioned look at Adam as the Duke continued to explain what each document was. “And yer reason for showing me M’Lord?”
Adam smirked… “if Ah knaew Dmi, Ah would tell yae…. But knaewin’ mae luck, nae only mae wilst know where these lie… Should anything happen to mae… Make sure Bess and the Clan Leaders get these… tis Skye’s future…”
“Don’t’ speak that way M’Lord… the men will get the ship fixed, and we shall make it thru the storm well enough… Besides Ah have a lass waiting for me…” Dmi said in a low baritone voice, his elbow finding its way to nudge Adam hard. "Besides, we are in the same boat..." then he nudged his Lord and friend again and chuckled.
“Mabbe yaer right Dmi, but if’en bad ‘appens…” then he paused… “Speaking of… how ‘r yae and the Lady Willa doing? Any word of late?”
Dmitrii smiled… the joy was a bit infectious as he even made Adam smile. Patting his chest, “I have a letter from her just this morn…” his grin broadening… “She even called me her love… and said nicities that only I know…”
Now it was Adam’s turn to nudge Dmi, a wicked smirk upon his face. “Sae, Ah expect yae tae ask for her hand soon.” And Dmi’s reaction brought about laughter, as the tanned skin peaking from the beard darkened. “Better question, Wilst the lass take a lad as ye as her own?” laughing and nudging Dmi once again…
“Pzedyets M’Lord… I am nyet a child… I have yet to ask the lass even if she wishes too… nor her Father… and mabbe she does not want me for the rest of her life, nor he a son-in-law….” He retorted mixing English and Russian; scooting farther from Adam and his nudging him in tease.
Adam laughed for once in such a long time… “Better get busy Lord Zurban… yae are nae getting’ younger…”
“Pezdyets… ti kra chi, pa zal shta…” [curse word… shut up, please…] Dmitrii huffed and crossed his arms, his elbows upon the rail looking down at the men working…
Adam laughed again…
