Spring had come and gone and the summer moved thru it's longer days.. daylight was a never ending source it seemed, and work lasted long hours..
Inside Dunsgate.. the McGregor brood seemed to finally have found some peace.. Robin, Alex, Duncan, Thad and Auggie were a forcfel to be reckoned with in both the training yard and in play... Emily and Colleen were growing inches by the day it seemed.. now the toddler Emily was enjoying her role as big sister to the now crawling infant...
Chloe and Iain had blended their family well.. now the Parents of 7 children there was never enough hours in the day, nor energy to keep up with the energetic Brood..
Summer brought with it field work stocking of provisions and filling of larders, with the fruits and vegetables of the land.. in both Sleat and Struan.. The first part of the Summer had been spent at Dun Darroch... where a small yet beautiful ceremony had united not only clans... but a family... for eternity. The act itself raised on the edge of changing history.. and perhaps a changing of power throughout the land.
Now they had returned to Sleat... minus Iain... who had lingered to settle some pressing business... So Chloe returned to Dunsgate with the brood.. whom most of would be starting the academy within the coming months... Iain was not the only one with pressing business.. the love and light Garrick Island... a summons to court.. to trial for Portia McGregor... and another summons to Court as a witness to Shyvonne and Mark Collier.. (d)
Summer was here all ready. It seemed so long ago that winter had crept an icy hand about the isle of Skye and the heart of the Head Mistess of Oisles Academy for when the school started at winters break at the end of January, there were whispers that roamed about the lands of changes at the Academy, some good and some leaving the students and teachers quite puzzled but never were the words spoken full in the halls of the Academy for fear of wrath from the Head Mistress herself should she come upon such words.
Whispers spread like wildfire into rumors as the lands were plagued with the attacks of the Robin Hood. Most people didn't know what to make of a the uniformed and masked riders, nor of the leader they heard spoke with a voice neither of a woman nor a man but they were remiss to cry out in fear for with the group, brought wealth to some of the poorest villages in the land and punishment against those that sought greed in the first place.
The land was divided amongst the peasants at least, some thought this, Robin Hood, a saving grace much like the Lady of Dunsgate and some thought the group a menace and ill omen for with the group came word also of a Highland Witch who stuck the very nights the attacks happened. It didn't seem to effect the Academy though which was in full swing of lessons and planning of an event in late summer early fall in the form of a tournament, said to showcase the skills of teacher and student alike but hidden, as a means of raising funds for the schools improvement.
Word had reached the Academy of the wedding, however small between MacGregor and Robertson, had she been invited? The answer was quite clear, Shyvonne didn't care, for all missives from Dunsgate were returned, unopened since fleeing, leaving Chloe bleeding in the snow. Now came a summons had appeared that the staff of Oisles dare not send back but feared giving to their mistress. Shyvonne did nothing more then snap the summons from the servant, read it, flush with color and order her things and Mark's packed and swept the summons back at the servant in order that Mark should read it and be ready to go in an hour. So the pair left the Academy on horseback, no carriage to cramp their space and force conversation that had long been missing between them. Something that strained at Shyvonne heart since it began though she did everything in her power not to show it as they made their way to Dunsgate for the trial.
Mark had been summoned along with Shyvonne regarding the violent actions in Sleat of months past and now they were to provide testimony on the actions of Portia MacGregor, who had been banished to Garrick Isle in the care of Eulle MacGregor. He had ridden with Shyvonne but the trip wwith her had been one of silence… he either rode behind her or before her, and refused to ride beside her.
At Dunsgate, he provided her the respect she was due and escorted her thru the castle upon his arm, though still no eyes caught one another nor glimpse stolen. He definitely did not want to be accused by her in embaressing her before Chloe.
While there was a quiet regal wedding taking place between the Lord and Lady of Macgregor and Robertson. Eulle and Portia planned a small gathering of their own, made of friends and distant relative of the same farmer quality to attend their own wedding of the hearts though they long shared a bed and passions, but that was between Eulle and Portia and Eulle was not the bragging kind. Portia was his wife by the time summer and the summons came and he held his wife close, as he did often, always speaking words of comfort, wisdom and strength to ease her fears and troubles. Portia had grown much in her time at Garrick, more then any of them would realize he had told her and then made a show of purchasing new clothing, fine clothing...not of silk or flashing but modest cotton that upon the island was still a breathtaking sight to see someone in, especially when fields tended left one dirty. He hired hands instead to tend to the fields so they could go and of course they would go, he reasoned never fearing God was on their side and merciful. Portia was not the same woman they knew, and they would show them that not only in word but in show, they were simple and modest people, he and Portia, that alone would surprise the companion they were to keep for in the simple and modest ways of their living, they found their happiness. Eulle was not only content in the wife he had, but had felt blessed, more then he felt he deserved for Portia worked hard to be the woman she wanted to be, and the wife of a farmer was never an easy one, but she bore it with a grace that made her more beautiful in his eyes then ever a woman in a fine silk court gown ever could. So when they arrived at Dunsgate, he did so, with his held high and his shoulders rolled back, chest puffed out in pride at the wife upon his arm.*
All those summoned were shone rooms where they would lodge and when the Last of them had arrived Court would be held on the next morning.. The Day had dawned grey and bleak, thunderclouds ominous and brooding as if to set the tone of the day.. The Great hall of the castle had been fitted with rows upon rows of benches.. two tables.. and a high backed chair that resembled a throne on a raised dais... People from the village and other guest filled the benches while the tables were reserved for Portia and Eulle.. and the other For Shyvonne and Mark... When all had been seated Chloe and her Baliff arrived... Chloe resplendent in a god brocade gown, with a ivory underskirt.. she looked regal and powerful a gold circlet her adornment the Clan plaid over one shoulder with the McGregor Broach sparkling with a life of it's on.. she settle in the chair as everyone rose.. She was after all the Chieftan of the McGregors and Wife of the Chieftain of the Robertson's.. a set of titles that carried much weight... her hands lay upon the carved arms of the chair ending in delicate fingers. devoid of jewels save a single gold band upon the ring finger of her left hand... Slowly she looked over those present.. her eyes lingering on Portia.. but never quite meeting Shyvonne nor Marks.. "We are here to address a wrong long left unpunished and unaccounted for.. and to address the current state of Lawlessness in the Provence of Sleat..." Her voice rang full and strong.. "Currently there are rumors of Theives that ride in the night.. Brigands who steal from the people of these lands.. and give their loot to others for aid.. " her eyes narrowed as she scanned the crowd, watching the uneasiness of all, never thinking that someone in her own family was the culprit.. "Any theft.. even that in which aids the poor or the church is still theft.. still a crime and will be treated as so.. The Crown has sent and Investigator to delve into the matter and I assure you.. the criminals will be brought to justice... Justice never sleeps and will eventually find those who go against her.. Those who aided and abetted the criminals will be dealt with severely as well. for these are crimes against the good people of Sleat and will not be tolerated.. " her voice had risen and demanded the attention of everyone in the room.. a deathly silence was held for long moments before she continued the days business. (d)
Upon arrival in Sleat, Shyvonne and Mark were shown to a bedroom and left. Somehow this seemed a cruel joke and one more thing added to her list. They were here for the trial of Portia MacGregor, even the simple memory of her cousin twisted at her stomach for it was Portia who had first told Shyvonne of Mark's deeds but it was Mark who had denied it. Now they were here, and Mark knew, that Shyvonne knew of him and Chloe and that Colleen was his, for even as Chloe had asked it, Shyvonne could not keep it secret. Mark had a right to know Colleen was his, and had every right to claim rights of a father but now her stomach twisted so painfully that her belly ached it would ache for days following. A place that had once held such comfort for her, such love as to swell her heart with bursting in happiness now felt hollow and empty.
They had not shared a bedroom in months… and now they would be forced to share one now? Did Chloe know of their delimma, or was this her way of creating havoc once more? Words seemed absent as he looked at his beloved wife. Part of him wanted to rush to her, rough her a bit to make the arrogance dissipate, then spank her ass hard for being such a bytch, then make mad passionate love to her to remind her of who he was and how much he loved her… but the other part of him, the pride, made him stay his distance… it was her that had formed his barrier… if she did not love him enough to knock down the barrier to her heart, then maybe someone else would appreciate his manliness…
Searc absence sang out from every hall and even the halls which were filling in people and noise seemed empty for the loss of him. The deeds that happened here stung as well, teasing her mind so with threat of a vision of what had transpired that she was afraid to sleep that night and so when the trial commenced the next day, Shyvonne had hardly slept, waking herself every time she had found herself falling asleep, so afraid what she would see in her dreams.
Two tables had been set out away from the rows of benches as she and Mark were directed to the table on the right. As they sat waiting and as they sat listening to Chloe opening, Shyvonne wished to reach out to take Mark's hand, the urge was so strong that her face which should have been calm, collected and listening was scrunched up as if in deep thought of something she didn't want to be thinking about. It was only when Chloe words sung through the haze Shyvonne realized she was talking about the Robin Hood and slowly, her face turned hiding a grin curling at one side of her mouth for the barest of moments but silence rang until the days business began and Shyvonne sat, still and cool and cold as if Winter was still fighting for control in this very room.
Pompt and ceremony, that is what Chloe seemed to like… as did Iain… that was one thing that Mark could not appreciate and was glad he was not born to royal blood. Mark sat by Shyvonne at the table, his hands together, fingers interlaced. He wanted to take her hand… to feel her touch… to know, in the slightest, if she truly loved him… but that would not come to pass as she contuned to portray the Ice Witch.
When the day began and the court was summoned, Eulle followed Portia into the hall, taking the table to the left as Mark and Shyvonne sat right. His clothing looked out of place here though they were earth tones, a creamy white tunic and brown slacks covered by a rust colored vest buttoned down his front. Pausing, he slid Portia seat out then took a seat beside her, his arm went about his shoulders and his lips found the side of her temple. "Did I tell you this morning how beautiful you are? and how much I love you?" He whispered against the hollow of her ear while they waited for the proceedings to begin, only loud enough for her to hear but his affection of body presented no doubt that he was not only her mate, her companion and husband, but protector. When the court assembled, his arm stayed about her shoulders while the other curled to take her hand that lay on top of the table. He was silent, least he miss anything, listening. He knew nothing of these....attacks and hear Chloe speak of them did nothing to mare his face except a slight crease of the brow in wonder but he would wait and trust in God through this.*
When the summons had come it had been as if the world had stopped.. suddenly the past she had though left behind and over, and the new life she had forged with Eulle had collided in a violent vicious fateful destiny. Her eyes had scanned the summons hands shaking uncontrollably until she finished.. her knees suddenly buckling as she sat hard upon the small wooden steps of the porch. Eulle was in the far pasture.. working the fields.. and by the time night had encroched and willed him home, she was a hysterical shambles.. sobbing uncontrolably, about ruining his life.. how she should have never dared happiness.. and how her sins had found her... Her first instinct had been to run.. far away start over in another country... alone... leaving him behind.. but her heart would not let her... for her heart now truly belonged to her husband and she could not bear the though of a day without him much less her life..
As Chloestrains words rang out over the court she trembled.. her hand tightening over Eulles until her knuckled turned white... She had asked for and was denied a private audience.. and sensed Chloes need for a public display boded no good for her... that Chloe's ire was already taxed by a new problem in the realm was even worse.. it seemed as if fate was against her.. To Eulle's question of had he spoken of her beauty or love this day. she merely offered him a sad smile.. wondering if this would be the way he remembered her.. petrified of death and leaving him behind... (d)
After the silence that was crafted to settle the seriousness of the day upon the gallery of townsfolk and accused alike she stood turning halfway to face Portia.. "Portia MacGregor.. you have been found guilty of crimes against you Clan and Family.. of conspiring to the murder and torture of Searc MacGregor, Shyvonne MacGregor, Robinson MacGregor, and overthrowing the Clan Cheiftan Serac MacGregor , with your Husband Vargus MacGregor and the Villain Carver MacDonald.. Conspiring to begin a Clan war between McGregors and MacDonalds. Your husband and Carver have met their fate, and yours still remains to be seen too." she paused a moment , wondering if anyone would object to the fact she had already found Portia Guilty and was about to pass sentence. (d)
Shyvonne head turned sideways as Chloe spoke, turning her attention to the table where Portia and Eulle sat. She had not seen hide nor hair of Portia since Eulle had 'taken control' of Portia when Kane wanted her head along with Vargus to stake outside the Academy. There was something different about Portia, for once the woman wasn't been the poisonous venomous smiling snake that Shyvonne knew her then to be. Now she seemed to tremble, her frown so pulled downward, her whole face was pulled downward. She was scared...Shyvonne realized but was she sorry. Her head snapped back into place when she realized Chloe had said she had been found guilty all ready and was about to sentence the woman, to what fate Shyvonne was not certain but a trial without the company? Her lips pursued in curiosity for she wasn't sure if this was pleasing or not.
Eulle fingers stroked over Portia. Her sad smile broke his heart for he hoped she would have as much faith in him and God as he did. He had seen the look in her eyes while she sobbed, she wanted so much to run and for once in his life, Eulle felt guilty himself, for he knew without question, he was the reason she didn't flee. She didn't leave because she couldn't leave him. His head tilted downward as Chloe voice rang out again but snapped up when Chloe had paused. Wait a minute! His cheeks visibly sunk in as he sunked all air from it, a true sign of his irritation. "Chieftain..."He spoke and released Portia to stand from his chair.
"While I acknowledge your right to pass judgement and sentence, to come into this room and be told all ready that my wife is guilty without a proper of hearing evidence and witness testimony is ludicious and unjust when you have just sat there stating thieves and the likes will be punished justly is a contradiction of statements. If anything, I ask the court as it stands, to hear statement of my wife, over the months she has spent in Garrick Isle, that is, if my statement would not be enough to attest that the woman you are about to sentence is not the same woman that sits here now. I pose the court to consider that the acts of the accused were ones committed in fear of the husband she possessed and as the court knows of the cruelty of Vargus MacGregor, that it is possible, Portia did these things out of fear for her life and take such accounts into consideration." Eulle was no barrister, but in his time spent in Garrick, before Portia and after the death of his first wife and children, had left him time to read. "I have served the army of MacGregor a long time Chieftain, I have lost over it and even when I wished not to fight, when I was summoned, I came. To do so was an honor and I never sought retribution for the honor I felt it was to serve my country and clan, but I ask this court now, to repay the blood I have spilt, and the...lives lost by hearing this trial justly before sentence is passed." With that, he slid down into his seat again.*
A dark brow lifted at Eulle's impassioned defense of his wife... " Good Sir ... Your service to this clan and the loss you have suffered is noted, and taken into great consideration.. As is the nature of Vargus MacGregor, and the lack of power a Wife holds in face of such a power as Vargus... It is with regret I inform you that regardless of the transformation of the woman I see here before me..regardless of your Marriage and feelings toward her... She still must pay for her crimes... And as you so grandly exposed... it is my Right to Pass Judgement on my Clansmen, and hold them responsible for their actions... There is no doubt she was an active part in Vargus's plans and that she also orchestrated some of those indignity's and horrors that were laid upon my Husband, Sister in law and my own Child.. that she was commiserate in bringing about the war that hundreds died in... the proof in her own writings.. letters to her husband.. of the cruelest nature..." Her eyes had been fixed on Eulle this whole time and now shifted to Portia.. " Stand.. and face the court and your Husband Eulle.. confess and repent your crimes, to your people.. your victims.. " (d)
A slender brow arched when Eulle rose out of his chair, near to barreling the legs backwards to defend the woman sitting next to him. His....wife. So he had married her, poor man. That feeling to grip Mark's hand was strong again so she lay her elbows on to the table before her and cupped her hands together, pressing her lips against her knuckles. Idly she wondered as Chloe spoke, if she was called her not to witness but to be tried for her own crimes for she had struck and nearly killed the Chieftain. A Chieftain Shyvonne reasoned, she still be Searc. Portia was not alone in needing to be accused and tried for her crimes for the very Chieftain in Shyvonne opinion should be tried for the crime of murder of her brother, she may not have wielded the knife...or sword...what the weapon was, was still lost on Shyvonne, but Chloe had murdered her brother just the same. So, Chloe could sit high on her throne and blink an eye like nothing was wrong, like she could pass judgement without calling into question her own? Warning of punishment for the act of thievery. Oh how Shyvonne mind turned for the next task of the Robin Hood, soon they would be marching on Dunsgate to enact the justice left undone. For that was the Robin Hood purpose, Shyvonne constantly had to convince herself of this, and today, she did just that again. She found the room silenced again from murmurs of Eulle's outburst and Chloe authoritative command and turned her head to the side, resting her cheek against her clamped hands to look over at Eulle and Portia table.*
Portia had been startled when Eulle had erupted and demanded a fair trail.. her hands reaching for his arm to stall him, but he would have none of it until he was done... She was at once proud and saddened , Proud that he loved her and was such a good man as to defend her... and Saddened because every word Chloe uttered against her was true.. Slowly she stood... to face the gallery of people.. her eyes moving to Shyvonne.. and her husband Mark Collier.. a soft blush tinged her cheeks as she remembered torrid moments in his arms.. and the whore she had once been.. Golden curls had been tamed into a modest bun at the nape of her neck, her once pale porcelain skin now kissed by the sun..a simple pale blue dress, modest and befitting a farmers wife, her only adornment a golden band on her ring finger signifying her marriage to Eulle.. " I do not deserve any kindness, from anyone here today... Lady Chloestrain speaks true.. I am indeed guilty.. of everything she has charged.. " there was mumbled gasp and shock at the straightforward confession... of the woman before them.. There were no tears or hysterics.. only a calm tone.. as she turned to Shyvonne... " Lady Shyvonne... there is nothing I can do to undo the terrible things my husband did to you, or that my actions caused you.. and I deserve not your forgiveness nor mercy.. but I am genuine in my sorrow and guilt that I feel for deeds done to you and yours... I wish you every happiness and know.. that if it were within my power... I would undo it all.." then there was a slow turn back to the people of the gallery.. " To the rest of the clan.. I cannot express my guilt, and horror that my actions ripped brother from brother and husband from wife, and parents from child.. that many died because of the gross need to own more.. have more power.. I offer no reasoning other than ignorance of the real worth of love, life and Family..." the last turn was back toward Chloe.. and she trembled facing the woman who held her life in her tiny hands...(d)
Eulle cheeks looked barely there as Chloe spoke her peace. He was ready to jump to his feet again but Portia hand against his arm stilled him. His face turned to hers, there was no defeat in his face, a soft composure came over his face at the look of his wife's face. Cupping her tiny cheek in his hand, he leaned over to kiss her lips softly and as she rose, his hand found the small of her back. In this moment that she rose to confess her guilt and sorrow over her deeds, she never looked more lovely and this could seem like a funny thing but to a man who loved the woman and knew what she had done by her own mouth and to have seen the transformation of her being in the months spent together. She was trembling, he could feel it but no man who took the battlefield could be as brave as she was being now and he was proud of her, oh so proud of her.
So Shyvonne had been right in her assumption that not only the clothing of the woman had changed, but the woman had changed. In her attempts to be flattering in the past, she was also biting cruel in her flowery sentiments that were more an insult then compliment. This was the Portia that she had known. Not this woman who looked so simple but still so elegant in her simple attire and Shyvonne realized with a raise of brow that Portia had truly changed, not her clothes but her whole mannerism, her whole life had been turned around and it was with some reverence Shyvonne realized it was Eulle that had changed her.
Shyvonne head turned on her hands when Portia focus had turned off her to look at Mark beside her. Had Portia found the person she was meant to be with for some part of Shyvonne still felt that every person was meant for one other in this world, though they could love many, there was only one person who brought out your true soul, who saw and loved your true soul as you them. Now she realized that the distance between them was because of her as well, because she had changed, could he love the woman she was now? For she loved him still, despite the truths that had been revealed, she loved his true self, his true heart and soul. Could he love the leader of the Robin Hood who did unspeakable things (though she had yet to kill).
Statuesque would describe Mark as he sat at the table. Though blue eyes would look about while his thoughts churned eventful memories… memories of the torrid sex scenes he and Portia had, to the blood and murder of those committed during the war. He listened to Portia and Eulle discuss their lives now, and he wondered how cruel life could be… He had seen Portia change under Eulle’s care and love… and he glanced at Shyvonne and how cold she had become… and he sighed but kept quiet and still.
Her attention turned around noticing the silence and slowly her hands unclasped and lay against the table as she rose, she didn't address Chloe as many looked from her to Chloe out of instinct but instead, her attention went to Portia. "Whether, you imagine you deserve it or not Portia MacGregor, I offer you my forgiveness in the part you had to play in the plans against my clan, family and person. Despite what this court decides, your guilt on my part, is absolved and forgiven, and I pray, it brings you some measure of peace." Crossing the small distance their was between their tables, she took Portia into her arms, hugging the woman soundly to her, even offering her cheek a kiss before she returned to her table and sat down.*
Portia was stunned.... completely at Shyvonne's speech.. even moreso the brief hug and kiss to her cheek that followed.. there was no other word for it than stunned.. so much so that it took her a moment to recover her thoughts "Thank you Lady Shyvonne... I do not deserve you mercy but I am thankful for it.." her eyes watered softly, tears now brimming there as she turned to face Chloe once more.. " Lady Chloe... I have no excuse for the things I have done against the Clan.. Searc.. you and your Son... I could plead fear of my husband, works not done by my own mind... and it be partially true.. but.. I am responsible for the things I did.. and in the time I did them took no guilt from them... I was a horrible person and deserve punishment.. in this world and the next... for my deed... and I am ready to take such punishment.. and I confess wholly to my crimes.." she swallowed harshly... and drew a long deep breath... " I do however wish to beg the court.. for a bit of mercy.. not for myself.. but for.. my children.. Barthomew and Mason McGregor... They are in the Lady Shyvonne's care and hold no sin against the clan... I would see them continue in her care.. and wish them to be treated as good boys.. for they share not my or Vargus blood or madness..." now dark brown eyes turned back to Eulle " And for my Husband Eulle... I wish him to know no taint of my name.. or my deeds.. for he has been nothing but a loving caring Husband.. who has married poorly.. " the golden head then bowed before the Chieftain to await the sentence.. there was no need of a trial, for she had dutifully and wholly confessed outright without pleads of mercy (d)
Chloe took all this in, and when Shyvonne showed her mercy she wanted to shake her sister-in-law senseless.. she had no right to speak for the Clan.. nor undermined Chloe's authority by offering such forgiveness... Chloe's lips settled in a firm line as Portia confessed, and repented.. this was a woman who tried to kill her child.. who was complicit in the deaths of so many.. standing before her.. how many times had Chloe dreamed of seeing her dangling from the business end of a rope.. and yet.. the change in Portia was palpable... the way in which her eyes betrayed the deep love she held for Eulle with every look.. but it was the plead for mercy for the adoptive sons.. that moved Chloe's heart a tiny bit...
She rose from her seat and waved a gentle hand to quell the mumbling's and murmurs of the gallery... letting her green gaze slide over to Shyvonne for a moment then back to Portia.. "Portia McGregor has confessed of her own will to this court and it's people her crimes.. and as before stated she is guilty of such and will suffer punishment..." she moved slightly to one side.. and indicated a scribe should begin to record the verdict... "TO all those here, the command of punishment will be carried out as soon as decreed.. there will be no appeal and the judgement will be final" eyes that resembled hardened emeralds landed on all those there " Portia MacGregor... all your holdings and titles are forfeit to the Clan... you are stripped of any affiliation of the Clan and your name shall be stricken from the Family bible as if you had never been born.. Further.. all properties real and liquid will be retained by the Clan... 50% to be given to Shyvonne McGregor for the rebuilding expense and continued education of the Children of Sleat... The Property to be sold and it's profits also given 50% To Shyvonne McGregor so it will continue to educate the next generation so they do not repeat the folly of their ancestors, and greet the future with minds that are open and without malice. The other 50% to be held in trust for the Sons known as Barthomew and Mason.. until their maturation.. Titles also be held for them, for they should not suffer the fault of their parents sins.. of which they had no part. As for Eulle McGregor , he should not suffer slight nor hardship from his unfortunate aquatinted and marriage to you.. I know him to be a good and decent man and would caution everyone in the Clan that he should stand no foul in this mess..." now her eyes washed over the galley to let them feel the weight of her words... " Portia McGregor.. you will be taken from the courtroom.. to the center of the courtyard of Dunsgate... and with the witnesses of the people here submit to God and punishment..." there was an eruption of murmurs then as Chloe begin to pass judgement.. " You will be placed in the stocks for four and twenty hours... and suffer the degration and humiliation the people of Dunsgate see fit to heap upon you... " now she turned her eyes back to the crowd.. " Anyone laying a hand or blade to her will be punished along side her.. there shall be no..examination of her private parts by any hands nor eyes.. and nothing harder than rotten fruit thrown her way.. there will be guards posted to watch and see that all is carried out as to the courts decree. and when you time is served.. you will be banished from Dunsgate.. and your fate will belong to your husband. "(d)
There was the barest of grins for Chloe when finally the two womens eyes met. Oh she knew that look on Chloe face that said she wanted to shake her but the truth was, she offered Portia her forgiveness, not the clans, if Chloe but opened her ears. She had every right to speak for her family for the base of a clan was family and that was what she meant by offering her forgiveness for what Portia had done to her clan, her family, her own person. Rolling her shoulders back, she sat straight as Chloe gave the verdict, the murmurs only a dull whisper in her eyes for by the time they happened, Chloe words had sunken into her brain. So this was why she was summoned to a trial that all ready held sentence upon arrival? Chloe was giving her half of Portia estate in funds to help with the Academy...after what she had done? After demanding the money that had put them in jeopardy in the first place? Her fingertips rapped lightly against the table top, to light for sound even if it were silent in the courtroom. There was a plot here Shyvonne was sure of it, but she couldn't put her finger on it. What was Chloe playing at? Was this her attempt to make amends? The question remained, would Shyvonne accept it...She'd accept the money though, she was no fool, whatever her vendetta with Chloe, the children shouldn't suffer for it. Now she realized, that she wasn't called in to account for her own 'wrongs' against Chloe for that would call into question the rift between them and least of all, Chloe didn't want the parentage of her daughter Colleen revealed for Shyvonne was sure Chloe would thing her bird enough to sing the truth if it was brought up but still, she was puzzled, the pieces didn't connect between the Bailiff and Chloe, it was a mystery and the puzzlement on her face was clearly visible as she stared at the table in thought of it.
His hand found Portia as Chloe waved a hand to signal the writing of the sentence. Though he believed in the truth and forgiveness of God, still low on his lips, barely moving to keep it private, he prayed. So Portia was to loose all title and property? That he could live with but to be stricken from record of the clan as if she never existed? Even he thought this a bit harsh, his prayer stopping mid way through. Was not loosing everything punishment enough? But it continued, put in the stocks? He shook his head and squeezed Portia hand. Twenty four hours and her life would be in his hands. Twenty four hours and he would take her home to Garrick Isle where they could live happily and blissfully away from the court of MacGregor. At least the Lady Chloe was being kind in that no harm was to come to her but allowing rotten fruit to be thrown at her when he remembered a time when rotten fruit had been thrown at her! He tried to reason understanding had it been his child in danger but found himself coming up short. She was being forgiving in not taking Portia life but women were a fickle vengeful and grudge holding sort. It wouldn't matter if Portia had born a child and put it into Chloe hands in a show of forgiveness; Chloe was going to see Portia humiliated. Well...guards or no guards, he was going to stand beside his wife, all twenty-four hours. Raising from his chair as the verdict ended and the room erupted into more then murmurs, he took Portia into his arms and kissed the hollow below her ear. "We're going to talk of my poor choice of wife when we get home, Shrew..." He rumbled low against her ear and pulled back enough to show her he was teasing by the smile, however slight on his lips; the joke was timed poorly but he hoped she would remember, that he called her shrew when he thought she was being silly. It was a way of dealing with the irritation that came when she belittled herself for he liked it none. A hand brushed through her hair, accidentally pulling some of the strands out of her tight bun making her hair look a little scattered. Opps. "I love you..." He murmured low as he kissed first her forehead and then her lips. "Shrew" thrown in for good measure.*
Portia had listened to the sentence, and felt relife that her children and Eulle would be spared any ill effects of her deeds.. a soft bloom of color surfaced her face and her paleness fled when she felt her heart expand to know that would be safe from harm.. For in the night while Eulle had slept she had come to face the fear of her own death and accept it.. for she had been blessed with the true and real love of the man who called her wife.. and could ask no more of life.. especially when she had squander it so easily before coming to Garrick Isle.. She had made peace with God.. and accepted salvation... and knew beyond a doubt.. that she was blessed... and loved.. by a God that Eulle had made real for her.. When Chloe passed the rest of her sentence she swayed.. into Eulle's arms, as he held her.. speaking of shrews and love.. and she begin to laugh softly... at his adamant nature... her hands lifting to cup his cheeks softly... " 24 hours in the stocks is a gift for all the misery I have sewn upon the land.. and these people.. it is a but a pinch of what I deserved.. She had given us such mercy undeserved.. but I will gladly serve it to spend the rest of my life with you..." now tears streamed down her face... " I though to be hanged.. and never see you again.. it was the most awful feeling.. to have just found you, be loved by you and have it taken away... death.. paled in comparison" (d)
"You've a great many years ahead of you, its likely you'll put me into my grave first" He teased as he squeezed her hip and pulled her tight against him with one harm and wiped at the tears on her cheeks with a calloused thumb. He kissed her once more and when they took her to the stocks, he followed and took his place on the raised dais that held the device to stand next to his wife and would for the twenty-four hour sentence.
When the company rose to take Portia out to the stocks, she followed, it was a mass of people that huddled the halls out into the courtyard but she did not stay to watch Portia be put in the stocks. She had offered her forgiveness and was done with it. She would not stand to see the sentence carried out nor be one to throw anything at the woman for Shyvonne more then anyone knew the cruelty of Vargus and could in this moment understand why Portia had done what she had done. She knew nothing of Portia and Mark else the thought might of been different but she never asked Mark of the companions he had kept before he met her and it was likely never to happen. The only one she had asked for in truth had been returned in a lie. That lie had turned her outlook on things topsy tervy, instead her steps took her to a familiar hill, where once snow held blood, the hills were now green and blooming with flowers of summer.
She stopped only once to stoop and pluck some of the wild flowers on her way to her brother and fathers graves. Half was placed on one and then half placed on the other. She gave only a moments pause at her father’s grave for the man who had helped in her conception was so unfamiliar for her, only a memory or two lingered of him and they were foggy, she had only accounts of others to attest of his life for her. It was Searc grave that she lingered longer stooping down to pull some of the weeds from around his headstone before she laid the flowers down, kissed her fingers and touched at the etchings of his name. Shyvonne was no fool for she knew despite her heightened respect for her brother that had he lived, her secret marriage would of been dissolved and she would be sent to convent for the shame she had done her family but so much of her contempt for her brothers ways died when he took his last breath. "If your headstone could talk for you Searc, perhaps you would tell me what they hell that woman is playing at." She spoke in silence and grinned.*
Mark did not care what Portia’s sentence would be, he was deaf to what Chloe had said… he simply watched Shyvonne’s facial expression go from one expression to the other. God, she was beautiful… and she was his wife… though emotionally, one could not tell that was the case… She had been cold to him, and he had exiled himself to the stables for months now…now he was forced to be nearer her than he had in months… and it played hard upon his mind… and body.
He did not want to watch Portia’s sentence carried out and he wandered about the halls and headed to the exterior, out toward the gardens…
Chloe had watched with a passionless face as Portia was placed into the stocks... and Eulle took his place beside her, daring any to harm her with his eyes and manner... many milled about the square but not one hurled anything more than insult her way... Chloe smiled to herself thinking what grand people were these.. for they acknowledged the change in Portia and her repentance.. and heaped no more indignity upon her... Chloe was both proud of her people.. and the couple before her.. for out of great trials had come great love.. it seemed to be the way of things in Sleat.. where nothing seemed easy.. and yet great bounty could spring from the rockiest soil given patience and love..
She moved to the stocks and spoke softly to Eulle.. "When her time is up, rest for a time and then.. bring you both to my council..before you go.. I would speak to you both in private " She turned then.. not giving him chance to ask why or what for.. .
I would speak to you both in private " She turned then.. not giving him chance to ask why or what for.. .
