The autumn air was gentle as the smoldering eyes looked out over the city from the high window. The soft silk robe draped the lush frame of the woman as she turned away. A delicate hand lifted and waved a maid closer. It was morning, yet it was time to close off the house. Augusta found herself tired this morning, far too many visitors the night before and the conversations of arrogant men were becoming droll.
The heavy velvet drapes were pulled close to block out the sunlight as it graced the heavens. The barefeet moved slowly acrossed the plush carpets of her chambers. The coal black hair draped down over her shoulders in the artistically done dishevelment. The maid moved then to turn down the bed as the soft satin of the sheets whispered and all but begged Augusta's presence. Just as she began to loosen the robe, a soft knock came to do the door.
" Come. " She stated as she paused the movements, her eyes settled upon the young girl , recently hired, stepped in and bobbed a quick curtsy.
" Pardon, Madame Augusta, there is a man here for you. He's from the church , so he says. " She stated softly and glanced up at Augusta.
" And there shall be no rest for the wicked.. " Augusta quoted as she turned and saw that Kait was already bringing her formal robe closer. " Thank you dear. " She spoke softly as she exchanged the silk robe for one of a heavier bolder material. She did not dress beneath it, she had no intention of this becoming a long conversation.
" Which door did the Man enter from? "She asked as the girl looked at her oddly.
" The front Madame. " She glanced back over her shoulder then turned her gaze back to her employer. " Should I show him to your chambers? "She inquired.
Augusta looked at her for a long moment before the rich laughter bubbled forward and the knot set within the brocade belt.
" Of course not child.. " She shook her head and set off toward the door. There was a moment of relief, it was business, but not THAT sort of business. Obviously God was smiling on her. The bare feet moved down the cold marble stairs as she made her way down into the foyer then with a glance the butler pointed to the solar.
Augusta gave him a polite nod , "Bring tea and a large brandy" She stated as she moved into the roomwith a grace that often left others vying for her attentions, or gnawling on their spleens in jealousy.
She looked around and judged the man in teh single sweep of her gaze. He was tall and pale, his frame was far too thin to be of any of the militant orders. She dipped herself into a low cursty,as her eyes lowered appropreiately.
" Good morning , Your Eminence." She slowly stood up as the man turned and regarded her with a flat stare for several minutes.
" Good morning. Madame Constane , I was not aware that I would be awakening you out of your bed. " He stated smoothly. the deep voice was melodic, Augusta decided she liked it. The man however was a different story.
Much like the maid upstairs, she laughed softly and crossed the room, seating herself onto the overstuffed couch. " Not at all, One would have had to gone to bed. "She offered softly. A servant opened the door and brought in the tea and glass of brandy as she gave a nod toward the table.
" Ah yes, I have been informed of the odd hours you keep. "He noted with a measure of disapproval in his tone. Augusta chuckled softly and settled back onto the couch with the glass of brandy in hand. The tea was left for him if he chose it.
" I am quite certain my ackward hours and sleeping habits, Eminence, that isn't what brought you to my home. " She spoke quietly as the small sip was taken. Her cheritable smile had vanished as she now wanted to see what it was that the man wanted.
" Indeed, it is not. I have come requiring about the girl, Wilhemia. " He stated as he walked over and seated himself. Not touching the tea cup however.
" She isn't here. " She stated plainly. " Frankily I don't blame her.. our lives are .. somewhat poluted, something the girl has seen enough of and found it not to her satisfaction. " She explained.
" You allowed her to leave Rome? " He seemed startled by that.
" She is not a prisoner, and a woman with her own freedoms. Why are you searching for her? "She asked directly.
" This is most unusual. " He commented quietly and shook his head. " Upon speaking with His Most Holy, it was agreed upon that the girl should recieve a striped end of her father's wages. Since she is unwed, it is likely she unable to care for herself. His Holiness would not see a daughter of Odesis go without care. His work for the Church was extrodinary and the family should be taken care of. " He paused a moment , the stern expression shifted into a deep frown. " Would you know where the girl has gone to? "
" She has probably gone home, to Scotland. Or so her letter stated."She shrugged and took another drink of the brandy. " If you wish, you may leave the money with me and I will see it reach her. " She offered quietly.
The man shifted and shook his head. " That would be unexceptable. I will speak with his Holiness, I am certain he will wish to keep this as Church matters. " He stated firmly. Augusta looked at him and smiled coolly as she inclined her head.
" As you wish, Eminence" She spoke softly. " However I am sure you can understand if I make one small recommendation? " The woman added as she leaned forward and set her glass down.
" Which would be? "
" Leave the girl in peace. His Holiness has made it clear he wishes no ties to the girl. The striped end and nothing else. She is not her Mother's daughter. " She stated firmly. " And I would rather it remain so. " She offered as she stood up. The man slowly rose as well.
" That sounds more then a recommendation. " he commented noting her tone as well as the expression upon her face. Augusta only allowed a faint smile upon the beautiful features.
" I am a daughter of the Church herself, and as always a humble servant. However, such servitude could come to an immediate end. " She noted seriously. The man seemed a bit taken back as he mulled over her words.
" I will see that recommendation is passed along. However, Madame, one should be wary of such words. "He warned her as she only laughed and gave a small nod. Augusta turned away from the man and started toward the door.
" I bid you good day, Eminence. " She remarked as she nodded to the butler that held the door open. The Cardnial had been warned when dealing with Augusta.. the woman was not one to trifle with.. her connections with the world itself could turn certain elections against those that currently controled the church. God help them, they were at the mercy of a whore and her whims.
