Lord Kendrew Campbell
The hours were fickle things to orient with his desires. A part of him had no desire to wait for Lee anymore but knew he would need a man to the right of him, just as he would need one to the left. Sunrise of the day after all at Kaelyn's bedside was revealed came so slow that he watched the moon mock him with a lazy drag through heaven. It wasn't without kin he watched this, for at a time when his son could not sleep, he settled the boy known as Morgan in his arms. This is Skye, and you are Skye. So young.." he muttered as he held the life he helped to fashion in his hands. Was this not enough to keep any man? It was, and the tragedy was a man had to fight his own desires to do what was needed or no one would ever be safe. Those who were wrong would enact wrong, and those that knew what was right would cleave to what was easy, "You will grow in to a man, and God's will it will be that I see it. I do not think he intends for me to meet and at Kyleakin, do you? No. I wish to talk more of things as this with you as you age, as I have with Roric. I wish to see sires come of my daughters, to see them marry. I will be a man of some age then." Morgan only cooed, keeping all of his secrets. "Still, the adventure you will know, lad. Struan is not an unlovely place, and you will be kept innocent while your siblings learn better of clan matters than old men and babes. We should both be asleep, but we are not." Silently, he replaced the bairin in his craddle beside the form of his slumbering mother. "All my fortune, my happiness, I owe to you. Were that no anger could be risen, my wife. Yet who would defend your virtues, goodness, gracious heart, if not myself?" He kissed her brow, and went to stand upon the balcony of the room. (d)
[n]Lady Liliana Campbell[/b]
In a world where war was being fought it seemed almost humorous that any could be sleeping peaceful. Even in the streets people still went on about their lives while others slept calmly in their beds as if all was right in the world. Though not Liliana, she'd been asleep- fatigue having taken hold long after she'd fed her son and held him close to her heart, until the point where she caught a familiar voice speaking to another. Liliana couldn't be called a light sleeper, but considering the worries of her mind she was this night. She'd fallen asleep before Kendrew had returned to that castle, not that she'd been feeling particularly upto talked to him then, and not even known he'd come back. There'd been too much worry and fear. There was always worry about losing her husband, he was a man getting on in his years, yet the concern of him dying in battle was burned behind closed eyelids while Liliana lay 'asleep' at the kiss to her brow. How can you protect me, my husband, if you die? A concern of any in love, losing the other half of their heart, yet even moreso for someone who'd already near lost them in fights before. Swallowing, hearing his footsteps drift away from the bed, Liliana sat up slowly,"You're going to fight at Kyleakin. I'm to go to Struan with the children while you go off to get killed in battle." The words didn't need to be loud, not with the small one sleeping, for them to have impact- there was a quiver that could not be hidden. Fear, sorrow, love in a tone that tried its best to be firm. Liliana stood up, the moonlight briefly falling over sleep-tousled hair and copper-skinned curves wearing a simple ivory nightgown, to follow after him barefooted. (d)

Skye was so preocupied with itself that even as Broadford burned, others in other village continued to milk the cows or sit in chapel. Sleat raised arms to go to battle in fit worthy for scrolls with names like MacGregor, MacDonald, and Robertson while in Turas Lan the bells tolled out the hours of a place confident in the glory of the new monarchy. England quaked and Scotland stood still. He put his hands behind his back, standing tall in the moonshine. He looked too as one of the rulers both large or small of the land who made important decisions on behalf of the people on the land called home. Would he have raged like a MacDonald if Drynoch were disposed from his care? Would he, like a MacGregor, go valiant behind an icon made of what he himself desired to manifest in the world? Or would he like a Robertson go forth on premise of love at first only to find a new strategy? No one was without conflict but his territory was by far the most peacable of the locality. He could befriend any that were not lethal to his Lord and Lady. He would honor any man that honored truth, and so was friends with all clans no matter where they found affiliation. His one true hatred, Neil of Loch Awe, had not so much as darkened a doorway since the joust that pitted the men of Campbell against one another. He didn't turn at Liliana's words but felt them on his flesh like her hands, "Aye. That will be the way of it. In Struan you will be able to bare witness to the things that all of us would need to know. You are sharp, of wit. We should not have it said that the Campbell of Skye are oblivious, though our oblivion from this all has beeen..heaven." He sighed. Turning then to see her hair unbound he wanted to hold her, not discuss this. They whispered firm words so as not to arouse the babe. "It has been all that God could give, and blessed are we to have had it. While the clans to clans gather for their own reason, who gathers in belief of the King and Queen's will? Who gathers to learn and make not for themselves, not sensation? You will be safe beside them and they all the better for your presence. Yes, I will go to fight in Kyleakin, for in that same manner of testifying who among those now would not be more than happy to sell the MacSweens away? What will become of the center of Skye, the Eastern coast, if Kyleakin is left unchecked? This is no longer a battle of clansmen but one of a man checking the will of the King, it can not be had. I am not so old as to not be able to do my duty to my King and Queen, wife. They are gracious, God praise them, to have allowed me my peace..a eretirement to enact of myself if I so chose, and to only give me light duties, overseeing. To do nothing is to take gross advantage of that." (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Even feeling such anger and fear at his planning to go to Kyleakin, Liliana still wanted to be held by his arms. In them was an ability to make her feel safe and as if nothing could go wrong in the world. Yet it was not true. Things could go wrong, as proven by the many times before, and she stood firmly rooted to her own spot. A safe distance between for even as he spoke words that should have been endearing, Liliana could feel the tightening of her mouth. Glancing away, she murmured, "How many women heard such words before their husband went off to fight? To die? I have near lost you before, husband, and God willing you'll come home this time...but what if you do not? Will you deny Glenna and Morgan a chance to know more of their Father? Will you take yet another parent from Roric and Kylie? I need you, Kendrew, and I can't lose you. I won't sit idly in Struan while you go off to possibly be slaughtered. I thought with this decision that I'd not have to worry anymore that you'd go off to fight and return to me in a cart!" It was the only moment that her voice raised though just slightly. Liliana had no desire to wake Morgan from slumber. The child adequately seemed to be tied to the moon for getting him to sleep through the night had been a task. A sigh whispered passed parted lips,"I know that it may seem selfish of me, but I refuse to watch you ride off to battle again. I know of the gracious and loving kindness that Bess and Adam have given to us, and that you'd fight for honorable reasons- to protect what they have so lovingly given to Skye. I'll not go." Liliana gave a hard shake of ebon-head, tousled strands swaying with the movement, and crossed both hands over her stomach. Chocolate eyes glistened with tears though anger burned behind them. That their peace should be ripped away so casually, as if it never existed in the first place! That Kendrew would willingly choose to go made it all the worse. Part of Liliana, a calm and sensible piece, understood the reasons behind Kendrew deciding to go while another part raged at his decision, the fear of loss and feeling of abandonment. Unreasonable, perhaps, though there all the same. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"Liliana! Do you think that I would so willingly trade our peace for armor? Listen to yourself! I would nay do that." As he channeled his frustration into a terse whisper, the bit of Scotts played on his otherwise even accent. He was one of the few native born who had the advantage of being understood without a pea-soup thick brogue. Watching her become undone was not unlike watching Glenna or Kiley when the world didn't go their way. She was a grown woman with far heavier concerns. "Don't be cruel. I would give years more than may already be set aside to me for all of the children." Women fought with the heart, and it was the heart that affected him now. He narrowed his eyes before shaking his own head. Hands went up, then down to her shoulders. "How many men feel the burden of either their wives unhappiness or a nation, Liliana? I love you, more than anything. I have always fought doubly as hard, to return to you. I am not out of practice nor so far in age as to be useless. Men ten years older are in Kyleakin, fifteen! What then do I tell Charlie's daughters, or Grufford's wife? She is young and comely, just as you. I am sorry you have cast in your lots with old men." He took his hands back, "You worry of our age as it is, our conditions, without needing swords but that is the life. Men are called to battle, women remain home. We each fight on a different front. I have no desire to return home in a grave man's cart, but you have no right to tell me I would deny Roric's children another parent. Have a care, Liliana. If you do not go to Struan it will be your choice, it will disappoint me, but it will be your choice. Mark me when I say the way home shall be longer as you will be moving North before moving West, I will not allow you through the center, not when so many lower towns border the Valley borders." (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
"I saw it in your eyes, Kendrew Campbell! Heard it in your voice when you spoke to MacSween. You had already decided then and I knew it. I knew it. It was not even discussed with me nor did you take more than five minutes to decide. So do not fault me for thinking you willingly decided to do just that!" Liliana couldn't help it. Her voice raised louder this time though blessedly Morgan slept soundly. While his hands rested on her shoulders, Liliana stood still and stared up at him with chin slightly raised. She listened to his words though pulled away just as his hands moved,"Don't speak to me as though I do so foolishly! I have a care for Roric and Kylie just as much as our own for they are my own too. I worry of them! You speak of men older than you going off, but you are not them. Your ability in battle I do not doubt. It is the fickle luck upon such a killing field that does concern me and you would ask that I just sit by, and wait, again after those times before!" Anger finally took hold and fists balled at sides. Liliana wanted to smack him. She was worried about their family. What would happen without them? It was not as though things were all happy in Drynoch. They still dealt with their own issues concerning clan affairs. "What of the clan? What should happen to it if you die? Men still squabble over matters concerning being a new sect and women still desire to see theirselves in my place! While we may have had our peace it is not to say everything is safe in Drynoch. Stay. Do not do this!" Liliana stared pleadingly up at him, begging him with eyes as much as words, not to go to Kyleakin. Struan? Fine. They could all go there, their was not any fighting! (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
The lift of her chin made her so high and mighty that he would have appraised this stance in her if it weren't so critical she understand everything! He watched her through a hard lens. In his most silent thoughts he commended the lady who took a stance like this, he did not want nor have need of a token bride. At the same time, he wanted her to understand since when were they the only people to talk of this? What gave them the right to be the only unaffected party? It just made no strategic or continued sense that this madness wouldn't shake out the crazyed in the Valley. What if the Apollius old bond with the Robertson came in to question, what if the relation that the Lady of the Valley had with the old Robertson heir held some weight with Iain? What if a variety of things came to pass that pitted allies as enemies based on these three fueding families - no- indeed to him it was four, five, if one considered Argyll, MacSween. So many things drove him to a decision that was in some way very self serving. He wouldn't deny it, "You are right, I won't fault you that. Selfish and self-serving is it of me to look on MacSween and already feel the weight of the blade, or my spear. Selfish of a man to go down to Kyleakin but it is the way men are made wife. I am not guiltless, nor can I apologize for it. Yet here I sit trying to place my family in place of safety and perhaps of duty yet you would not go! No, Liliana, I am not them.....I am the Lord Guardian! That equates to far more than any yet they would not even tell me of what befell?" He was secretly angry at the King for his state of affairs so shoddy, and even the Queen for not coming to him as she once had done. These were times when that precious spot at their sides allowed one to see five steps ahead! "And who would hurt you in Struan, hmm? Who would be so bold as to do more than stare as the Queen herself held you close by? There is reason for Struan, knowledge as much as sense. To have Drynoch guarded and you, the children, with our most faithful retainers. My mother." Didn't she know - didn't she even sense - what could come of this for Lara? He sighed softly, "For even Lara. To stand in the will of the King and Queen and secure your fortunes more by your service, your love of them, as they love you. No one fights as this or thinks as this! You do. My service is by blade, so long of word but what has it purchased." He snarled softly before looking at where Morgan slept, "Do not think I do not love him, nor all you. If no man went to a field of battle, the wrong would do what they do unbidden and the right would only wait to lose everything. I do not want to come back to you cartbound, nor do I want to wait in hopes that others will continue to better do the job." He took her by the shoulders again, gently, "It was a partial retirement, Liliana. A choice, to be in full. A choice I gladly would make ten times over, but beyond any of our own selfish wants, even a man need to fight or your need to preserve or family can you stand by...can you?" There would be security in all things matched in his absence and return, there would be stigma if he did not go, imagined or otherwise. He loved them, fiercly. He loved his leige just as fiercly. "I do not know if our selfless desire to follow all things uplifts this realm or condemns it at times. All of these ill things, over what?" The MacDonald saw an opportunity to take what had been theres, and the Robertson were scorned by their master's love? The MacGregors had to defend what was theirs, originaly to fight Robertson but then all fought MacDonald, expected to be lauded? The MacDonald's fate - he feared -could secretly be theirs. -" Tell me, do I risk losing you in doing this?" he hoped that was not the case. She could not be so as to wave their love as high as Skye's banners, then yank it away, could she? So much power a woman had. (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Liliana could not understand, personally, what that kind of need felt like. The urge to feel blade in hand as once before. She imagined that for someone who had fought for many years it couldn't be easy. "I know you desire to be of use in this and that your intentions are honorable. You are a good man and they all know that. What good is fortune and favor if my husband dies? I would not want it!" It was a selfish thing to say, for in this Liliana did not think of Lara nor Dona. Yet in a way she did think of her sister-in-law. A woman who still mourned for her own husband. She didn't want to experience that. "You want me to keep me safe while you go off to risk your life! I refuse to go cause it is as though I am fine with it. I'm not!" Sighing softly, Liliana felt tears finally fall from where they had gathered. "I will not deny I'm being selfish right now. I want to support you in this Kendrew, I do, and yet.." Liliana didn't think that she could though. Would she go nuts worrying? Could she sit there and comfort the children while tucking them into bed that their Father would come home soon? That he wouldn't die? Even she could not guarantee that. And how could she soothe them when she feared the same and could not make herself believe it! Being in Struan during that time would be wise and she'd have Bess by her side, but it'd still be painful to ride that whole way knowing all he'd do is leave for Kyleakin shortly after. Hearing his question, Liliana let lids lower to shield her gaze and her voice was a whisper,"I would not want to leave you, husband, though now I wonder if this should not be the last war that calls to your blood then how many more times shall their be? If I do not lose you this time then what of next? I would rather have you die an old, old man with me at your side than alone and in pain where I cannot even be. It is selfish, it is, and yet I ask no forgiveness. Shaden once told me that I knew what you were when I married you, and she was right then, and that I had cast my lot in it. Leaving you would be the same as to have you die, and it is- and so I will not. Though I won't be happy about this...not one bit..." (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"I do not expect your happiness Liliana. No man is so stupid as to ask his wife be happy when he goes forth to do a thing dealing with death." He rubbed her shoulders gently before he looke her in the face as she did him, all was put on the table that night under the moon. So long they neve had to face this aspect of marriage, not since he was pulled off a row boat from the sea by Lucius MacLeod, not since the days of finding the men who now were restored to their family in caverns, or winter encampments. Not since Ireland. What adream it was to to imagine those were the last of it - but while his service was long in retrospect to the reign five years was quite short. He sighed, "We are not saints. We can be selfish time and again. It will not be a matter of months you wait, but days. I will not pretend this makes it better, but that is the way of it. I also can not hide reality. Look at where Kaelyn went, had she but told any of us, her state would not be so. Days. alone. No, that can not ever be again. This is not just my burden to bare, and I know it thus. I will take what the King and Queen will allow, what of our men make sense to take. We will join with what is there, and learn the truth of it. I do not want to die without you nor die for many, many years Liliana. Jesu, my talents are better than that or the King would not entrust me to breed him better men for all." Hands slipped away only to circle around her, "Shaden was right, but I also cast in my lot to take a wife, to be so loved that she wishes to share not, no?" He caressed her face, closing his eyes, "To have your hopes pinned on a star that shines because of armor is not easy, and I could for all the world say we are not the only ones but they are not us. I do not wish to leave you, the children, Mother, or Lara, but trust in a woman's disdain for this is also the same thing that inspires you of the gentle sex to do what we believe you can not. All I ask is your love, Liliana. Your eternal love. There are so many who now are losing that, putting forth public faces yet their lives have no love. Perhaps, faint memories of it..but no love." Maahes plight lay heavy in his mind, him, and many in the King's service were fortunate yet not so fortune. These ancient esteemed clansmen weren't fortunate. "I will not punish you for any thought have you, good or ill, but take all that comes so long as you love me. I do not want your happiness of this or even your support if you can not give it in earnest..I understand. All I wish is your ever-love, and your forgiveness. If you can not give me that, then your love." He was sorry to have harmed her so, but knew he was irrevokably tied to this venture, so much so that a foreigner was willing to ride to the right of him. (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Resistance wasn't giving to his secure arms. Sinking against him, wishing that this time his arms could make her feel as safe as those times before, Liliana weeped silently. She yearned only to be back in Drynoch now. Life had been so quiet, so happy, and only increased with the birth of Morgan. Now only to be replaced by worries and fears that could not be soothed away. Instead to Struan they would go and then Kendrew to Kyleakin, and during that time Liliana would have to pretend to be happy- smile for the sake of the children. "You will have my forgiveness when you return to me. My love though has always and will always be yours..." It was harsh to say. Liliana was not intentionally cruel. She aimed never to hurt another in ways she'd been- physical or with words. Yet her own hurt made the words the only thing she could say. She could not forgive him now. Lifting a hand to wipe her face, chocolate eyes shifted away from his own gaze,"You will tell the children. Not I. I won't deal with that. They will wake early." They always did seem to. Energetic children were those of the Campbells, waking early and never seeming to sit idle. She wanted to smile up at Kendrew and soothe him, comfort him, tell him that things were fine now- but they weren't. Liliana wouldn't lie to her husband. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"Aye then."
It was all he could really say. He nodded, it would be her place to tell them, not hers. The man wasn't a coward. The note of the air between them was such as Kendrew had never known it to be before. Would she really be waiting for him when he returned to her -would she really stay, or was she staying because it was what faith decreed, because no one should be there save her? He tried to comfort with gentle humor but she was not ready to partake of it. "As you will, my lady." He had been no better, yet could not bring his age to the fore and embrace maturity. He could not attribute this to her youth, her love of him as his eyes were in some slight way blinded by a little bit of hurt, a little offense. Oh he knew he warranted the same to her, but would go off to deal with it in proper fashion lest it be in his voice when he spoke to his children. Drynoch was far easier than this! As he left he hit the door frame of the room, turning the corner so that no more of him was left in her presence. (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Even Liliana felt the tension. It was not the same as before. Though they'd both spoke on the matter one couldn't say it'd successfully cleared the air. If anything, matters only seemed worse. Sheltered by his embrace Liliana found that what was in the air had seeped into her body, for even it was slightly taut, and inwardly flinched at the obvious in Kendrew's eyes and voice. "Husband." It was as much of a farewell as could be offered right now. She didn't know what to say or do to fix this. To say that she forgave him, that all was well, wasn't possible. It'd be more cruel to send him away with lies, would it not? Lord, Liliana didn't know at this moment. She was still upset with him even while feeling guilty for hurting him. When his hand hit the doorframe though a visible flinch displayed itself, and she held tears in check until he was gone from the room. What did this mean for them? Liliana wished she knew. Sighing softly, she crawled into bed to weep and rest- even if only fitfully, for Morgan would be up soon to feed. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
He did not expect her forgiveness, but even a better expression of love? What had he expected when Liliana was no longer eighteen years of age but well beyond twenty and one, so as to be twenty and three, caring not only for the children of their union, but of his brothers? What did he expect when he already expected much without having to ask for a Clansmen's wife was not what she had agreed to be in Aberdeenshire. "Fook." he cursed, walking with longer strides as he wanted to suddenly find himself in the courtyard at dawn with the men who rose to practice, the youth commited to following in a master's footsteps. He wanted to be with what he understood best as this was what he was taking up again, wasn't it? Men muttered as sleep still clung to their eyes while others who were used to the regimen gave deep laughs. Brothers. Was this what he missed the most of battle? Not the sound of swords itself but the sword-sworn who watched one another - brothers. He had no brother. For all his years of acceptance he still looked at the gravestone in the churchyard of Turas Lan with such an anger in his heart it surprised him. "Lord Campbell? Lord Kendrew Campbell out for the morning excersise? Look men, look you!" One man's notice was another man's shock. One man's shock was another man's celebration. "We thought this was not the place of old men! Have you come to prove us wrong sir?" He thought on that for a moment. He laughed, finding a little comfort there, "I am forty and three, boy, nay dead. Show me what transpires in my absence. Let us hope ye haven't all gone to chyt." He loved the earth in Drynoch, making things grow with plowshares, but missed how many brothers could replace the one he lost. It was why he was even happy in his small ventures to check upon the guardianships of others he set up. Was he less of a man for missing this, or more for admitting it? What surprised him most was to find that his son by adoption.his brothers boy..Roric, was already out with the men and lads of the castle. Ah, they had challenge in him! With nothing better to do, he took up a sword and joined the fore, even offering his instruction (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Time passed slowly though it did pass. Sleep was enjoyed only for a couple hours more and then Liliana awoke to the fussing sounds of a hungry little boy. She'd happily fed him, took comfort in washing and dressing Morgan for such acts were precious, and then readied herself for the day. After that point it was time to get little Glenna set for the day. Kylie had woken up before, at start of dawn, to head off to some lessons with some of the younger the ladies in Bess's service. The more delicate ones for ladies before the actually tutoring sessions on educational matters like language. By the time Liliana got Glenna's own little lessons done, teaching her littlest letters and numbers and to read by herself, it was already noon. She'd yet to see Kendrew or Roric by then but heard from a passing maid talk of them both out in the courtyard practicing. Liliana's own mind was offered a semblance of comfort and joy by being with her children, but it was not completely soothed. Would it be? Sighing, she placed a kiss against Glenna's cheek,"It will be time to eat soon. Would you like to go with Kylie to fetch your Da?" The eldest daughter returned shortly before noon and while it might seem cowardly to send the children off to get her husband- Liliana did have to situate Morgan again after his latest feeding. Babies kept one busy. Glenna eagerly nodded and the two left to go fetch the boys. Their little dresses neatly on display and the picture of young ladylike behavior...for now. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
He was able to use an outlet to dispate some of the tension. All of it wouldn't fade, but at least enough of it as he, Roric, and others practiced the arts of knighthood. The men would have them long before the ladies took hold of the youngest among them for lessons in literacy and manners. "There, good, just aim it just nigh.." He would adjust his son's stance, that of his partners before moving to a pair younger. The lads of seven with wooden weapons reminded him of how Roric was just a few years ago, just as zealous as his lord Prince had been. Now the age of twelve, Roric had steel to practice with, his own shortsword to carry, and a dagger in his boot. By the time the excersises ceased he stayed with his son as if it were a game of play between them. They talked more than just of weapons, but horsemanship, what it was to wear armor, the thrill of the joust, and the secrets of hiding things for he was still a boy. When opportunity presented itself he told the boy his truth:
"Roric, I want to tell you something. Very soon we shall go to Struan, and your mother, your aunt, grandmother, and your siblings will be with the King and Queen. I must go to Kyleakin. There is a battle there, and they have need of me. I know it has been many years since you've seen me go.."
"Father-Uncle," the name, a jest between the pair, was invoked now. He was confused for he thought that time over but did understand. "You are not too old then?"
"No. Old in some ways but young enough still in this."
"Why did you not - continue to fight before?"
"Because it was a time of peace, and time to build a legacy for our family. Some things are for swords. Others, for your hands. Now it is a time of swords. I have also made a promise, and must keep it."
"what promise is that?"
"That I will testify for the MacSween, this means speak on their behalf, that they are not men of treason for staying with the MacDonald man named Dublain mac Dhugal that leads the fighting. I believe they are not fighting anymore because of vendetta Remember we spoke of vendetta?" He looked to the boy, and saw him nod, "Aye, tis like a fued, a fight, tha' goes on because someone does nay like another for some reason. Father, will you be gone long?"
"No, it will not be a long matter"
"Are you frightened of being hurt or dying?"
He considered this question, and some might find it crazed but he said , "No, and that is the trut. I am worried that others may be hurt or die, and that will not bode well. I am worried things may get worse, so I go. When I go you will be the man of the household, aye?"
"Aye father."
It was so simple among men. Roric still had a sheen of unshed tears in his eyes, but by not shedding them proved that he was not so juevnile as to not understand. he cried more as he wanted to go, to protect him for them all, and to lay his own claim to glory. As they finished their conversation Glenna came among them, the picture of a lady's grace, "Da, Roric, tis time to eat. Mother says." Was father pleased? Indeed. He plucked up his little lady campbell and kissed her cheek (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Glenna sought to imitate Kylie for she was the elder sister and the one that the youngest looked upto. Kylie being the elder took much pride in this for what sister would not be happy to have her younger sister look upon her so? So Glenna followed after Kylie and both were happy to see the men in the family. Kylie gave a kiss to Kendrew's cheek when he bent to swoop up Glenna then trailed off with Roric to discuss the things older children did. The littlest was content to be carried inside talking of the things she'd done that morning with her Da- detail for detail in nonstop chatter. While Kendrew's ear was talked off by rapid talk, Liliana situated a fussy Morgan who didn't seem content after having been burped and changed, and walked about the hell softly humming to him. She didn't want to take him into the dining hall still crying. "You want your Da me thinks. Ah sweet boy let us go see if we can find him." It seemed that Kendrew could work miracles when Morgan was at his most fussy. Usually during the daylight hours since he didn't like to be woke up. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"What ladies have I to my credit and esteem .The pride of the isle you both," Kylie was taken with Roric as the pair discussed their lessons, what it was like to learn to speak french or how much did a sword weigh? Kylie admired Roric's place as Roric thought his sister would make only the best Lady in all the world. He would defend her honor with all he had, and Kiley! Morgan's birth made him wonder what it was like to have things like that, for aside from his family he was still rather selfish. Why not, he was a boy! He didn't tell Kiley yet what he knew as the family went in for a meal. Sooner rather than later his ears caught the sound of Morgan's tears. "Da' is the baby upset?" "Mmhm." "Did ye have to soothe me, he cries a lot?" "Ye weren't so hard Glenna, but everyone is different." (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
"Glenna was an angel, was she not Father?" Kylie's quiet voice piped up,"Just like a well-mannered lady." Sibling praise, given with love, that made Glenna's little face light up even more. The sound of Morgan's tears followed by soothing noises passing Liliana's lips could be heard as footfalls brought the pair closer. Even now with just the brief sound of Kendrew's voice it seemed to calm Morgan just a little. Small though he was the little boy knew the voices of those who loved him just as he knew their arms. In Kendrew's arms was where he preferred to be. Coming upon the family, Liliana perused Kendrew quietly from behind and offered a smile. She didn't want the children to know anything was wrong between them,"I'll trade you the bright bundle for the fussy one? He seems upset with me for waking him again." The little baby did like his daytime naps. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"Glenna, may I take yer brother. We may sit soon again aye? I will tell you a story, you tell me about lessons. Aye, Kiley, Glenna is just like a true lady. And you? Look at how you grow.Everyday you amaze me, child. Before you know it I shall have to scare away the lads who seek your hand." Time passed so that in the blink of an eye children were youth on the verge of childhood and adulthood, and new innocence was coming to take the place of the station the elders left behind. On seeing his wife he nodded his head, offering his smile of ever-patience, "let us trade. Here Glenna, come to your mother, and you, boy.. to me." Babes in arms were exchanged between parent's arms, Kendrew holding the most frail of all the children. "What is your trouble, son?" (d)
Lady Liliana Campbells
The exchange went down easily enough, Morgan was gently passed first just before Liliana took Glenna onto right hip. A kiss was placed against cheek as she bounced the wee girl on hip. While Glenna had the blessing of being so young and unaware the eldest did not. They could see what even parents tried to hide. Adults should never think children easily fooled for it seemed they were capable of picking up on far more than thought. Roric and Kylie exchanged concerned glances quietly though didn't say a word. "It seems, husband, that he can only be soothed by you when he gets this fussy. He seems to love his Father's arms as much as Glenna does." Though the words were kind and sweetly delivered, the tone full of warmth, Liliana's chocolate eyes locked with Kendrew's during it. It could be considered a barb, maybe it was?, she did not know. A point it was all the same. Turning chocolate eyes to Kylie and Roric, she murmured,"Have you two washed before lunch? Hands and faces remember." Keeping children, and even husbands, adequalely washed before dinner was a feat in itself. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
Roric knew the upset of his mother. He knew when his grandmother and aunt too were upset. It was the coolness in their calm, the edge to the otherwise infinite sweet tones that gave it away. Kiley did not change her expression lest it would be rude to gaze on her elders in such a way. No, she was blessedly relieved to be sent to the washing bowl in the dining area to cleanse her hands of the courtyard dust. "Roric, what is it? What's wrong?" It would only be then that Roric whispered of what their father uncle had said to him, thus understanding even in this transmission Kiley's role would become quite important in caring for their younger siblings, in things such as assisting with the lessons. She was old enough to do all of these things. Swallowing her worry, she nodded, but not before both children looked the way of Kendrew, "I enjoy having him in mine, as I do all of my family." Was it proper to think it was a barb? No, it couldn't be. That was foolish. Or was it supposed to remind him of what he was giving up,and that she was so disappointed, so indignant? He craddled Morgan close to forget the lot. Also, he did not consider her eyes much. "I will sit, but am not yet hungry. Should I be hungry I will visit the basin. Ah. is the dirt good enough for you lad?" On the way in he at least dipped hands in a bucket so they would be good enough for a moment like this! Kendrew's expertise in a fight was to be as Liliana had met him. A rather silent figure who knew when to speak. "Roric deserves a hearty meal. Someday, you shall be a grand champion." The pride he didn't disguise, having seen Roric in his excersises, "Just as you Kiley and Glenna, shall be great ladies. I suspect Roric you shall one day match swords with his Highness Prince Aodhan in your practice, You both seem quite equal to me." (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
"I think he would be comfortable in your arms even if covered in mud from head-to-toe." Morgan was too little to care about a bit of dirt. Even Glenna didn't truly. The Campbell children romped in it often, but were always good to wash up before any meals to please their Mother. "Have you seen Dona this morn? I know Lara had business with the smithy to tend to. She seems to be working more of late." Liliana had discussed the matter with her sister-in-law and discovered it was to keep sorrow at bay. When one focused one other things it seemed to help. She yearned to help her any way possible, but aches of the heart took time to heal. Placing a kiss to Kendrew's cheek then to Morgan's, she smiled warmly over at Roric,"I think that is his desire. Those two seem as if two peas in a pod." She highly suspected that if Roric could have his way then he'd be following at the heels of Aodhan. Perhaps one day he'd end up as his Father, protecting Aodhan as Kendrew did Bess. "Have you sent the Queen notice?" Liliana lowered Glenna to the ground so that she could catch up with the older children and gave attention to her husband. "I was going to send a missive to let her know we were coming, but did not know when you wished to depart." (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"Her majesty should already know, for I wrote her not long after returning from the Lady Ranger's bedside. She will expect us, and as of mother she's keeping Lara of company. Lara is working much upon matters of business, her services are becoming among the desired among the men. My good sister, the beauty of a woman and the resolution of a man." He wanted to ask her to look upon his weapons before he went, a sign of solidarity that he trusted no one's skill better than her own, but would it be too much? Kiley brought up a topic, "Father, when is the age of grown for a woman? "The law says it is sixteen, it is a comely age. Tradition says when she is married. I suppose it would depend upon your..desire so long as it did not give your mother and I great pause." "Do you think it is too early to consider an arranged match? I hear lots of girls have them, and they grow and then marry their husbands. Wouldn't it be advant..advantageous?" The large word stuck on the roof of her mouth but managed to comeout. "But we're too young for stuff like that! Aren't we Da? Who's looking at my sister?" Kendrew nearly choked on his ale, having at least settled with some meat and bread to eat. None of it would be touched a moment. To reply, hmm. He couldn't simply utter ' Hell no.' for it was an ardent question, "Advantageous. You have read deep into history. Many matches and families are secured by arrangements, but at times some things work, some things do not. You should also read your nation's history, young Kileyit gives even a lady freedom of choice, to approve an arrangement at her coming of age..or not. Your mind might change between ten and sixteen. Even so, we would not think to look for a match of you so young. That is not a burden I want you to bare." "But I want to bring honor to you in a good match.." "Oh pet, you bring me honor merely by living, by being a lady of beauty and good thoughts." Dear God. a match? Some matches were arranged at this age, some girls married as early as first menses. No. Not Kiley. He would not give her to be too early scarred by growing up too fast. (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
"Oh, well then that is good. When are to be expected? I'd like to begin readying preparations for travel. It will be much more to do with Morgan being young yet." A long journey with a child so small could be risky. He was already cranky as it was and she couldn't imagine him on the road. "The children will be happy to see Bess and the Aberdeen children. I know Glenna will be at home. I am glad Lara's business is picking up. Her work is good and she deserves the recognition." Once seated, Liliana saw that the children had suitable food upon plates and grace was said before she took part in eating her own lunch. Manners were used at the table by all children, a fact that made Liliana proud. It was Kylie's question that made both eyes widen. Marriage? Match? God she was young yet. What would make her think of such concerns? Letting Kendrew speak, she finally added on,"We are proud of you everyday Kylie. Our life is full of advantage for having you in it. Though such thoughts show maturity and wisdom, but we would like for you to take your time and choose a match that feels right in your heart preferably." Liliana wanted all her childrento find and experience a love like she had now with Kendrew. Even if they were currently at odds... (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
Consumate actors in the play of life with no ill manners before the children, "Yes, your mother is right, lass. There is no hinderance to a free choice you will have the mind and heart to make it when it is your time, I am certain." "What if I wanted an arranged match, would you?" Why such a fascination with it? Wasn't she...lord...he had to remind himself that she was growing up. Young as she was, she wasn't Glenna's age anymore (much to his chagrin) and had questions that young ladies asked, "Well, we shan't visit the topic now, my love. When you are..thirteen, perhaps, or fourteen even. Even then it will be two or three years from that time, much changes." Did the love of Kendrew and Liliana age as he foretold the girl would, needing to change? Did it freeze in all of that bliss they had unable to withstand the real world. He looked at her, canting his head in acknowledgement before looking back into his cup as if the answer lay therein. (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
Such a question to be asked! Liliana wished that, at this moment, she could view Kylie's mind. What thoughts were going through it? Did she have someone in mind already? That couldn't be. She was yet too young. Unlike some Liliana had never pressured about making a good match. Though it was said to be the only purpose and lot in life for any woman she didn't want Kylie nor Glenna to think that way. In Skye it was proven that a woman could have a good lot in life and not need a man unless they lost their heart to one. "Your Father is right, love, in time we will discuss the matter though should even one occur you will not marry until of proper age." She'd heard of women only a couple years older than Kylie starting families, having children, and could not believe one so young could have that much responsibility placed upon them. Liliana observed Kendrew from the corner of one eye. What was he thinking? Things seemed so... stilted between them since their argument, well it did seem a proper word, last night. Clearing her throat, trying for a semblance of normal, she murmured,"How did training go with the men?" Liliana had heard of the troubles of Maahes and Ealora, it was almost tragic, for even gossip had some truth- once weeded out, and then the sight of their children at the castle proved it. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"Alright. I was thinking about it." Kendrew gave a nod that the topic was released, a prayer that it not come up again for a few more years? Jesu, a man could take only so much! Still he realized how much growing had been done. There was a time not so long ago when Glenna was the way Morgan was in his mother's arms, when Roric played with a wooden sword, not a real one. "They went well, quite well. Good candidates among the young and fine fighters among the men. Perhaps as things go on I might see them all in the tilt yard. There are specialties here among the men, but those who seek the knighthood fully must learn to be mounted men as well as men upon their feet. I would like to look on the guard before I leave, to see that all is well. I am told the Queen's nephew has stayed, Bryce. I should like to see how he is fairing and the world about him. I should like to have left for Struan this day, but it is irrational. One should not push so hard a pace on the young, so tomorrow, at dawn. I have secured a carriage for you and all whom need it. Roric wishes to make the journey astride his horse.." "Papa, might I too? I should like to show you how well I ride." "Oh, my sweet, I want you within the carriage to help with your brother and sister. They will need your soothing influence, yes? Then when we are in Struan you may show me your progress." "Oh yes, please! I have learned to jump, both full astride and side saddle, they say a lady should know both now." Was she so old to ride a horse, to jump! Roric was learning to ride over distances, with armor. Did that make him feel his mortality, as he realized he himself was 43, to be 44 in the fall? "I am told the Prince road to STruan in his armor, beside his father. It will be my honor to go such a way behind the King. How are things among the ladies of the castle?" He asked in return, eating some venison, washing it down with ale. (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
How the years passed by. Sitting here as a family and talking proved it even more. Liliana could remember first looking upon both Roric and Kylie, and holding Glenna in her arms after she was born. They had been small and grew so big. She hoped Morgan stayed little for a bit longer. "I hear he is a capable man. I know there are ladies here that gush about him." That made one corner of her mouth quirk up as she shook her head,"I try to encourage them to pay more attention to their duties than handsome men but alas." Shoulders lifted in what-can-be-done shrug as she took a drink. The mention of traveling to Struan brought the slightest, hard to see unless one paid close attention, tremor to the hand holding cup to mouth and Liliana dropped her gaze as it was lowered to the table. "Then I will have trunks prepared. Will the journey be long?" Hearing the excitement of the children brought a brightening to her smile, but in her mind she still worried of what would come once they reached it. "You both grow so!Kylie we will see that your best riding habit is found and, if your Father should approve, perhaps you can ride into Struan next to him and Roric? A pause just before going into the city would suffice to let her ride in I think." Liliana wanted Kylie to have that chance. The young girl was one day to become a woman and already the maturity began to show. "The ladies do well in learning their duties and responsibilities. Keeping the younger ones upon their tasks can be a bit troublesome at times. Yet they learn slowly. Kylie takes part in their lessons with them. Someday, if she should wish it and the Queen would approve, she would make a skilled and gracious lady-in-waiting." (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"I see no trouble in a pause just before hand. What a fine image. My daughter, astride her horse, my son, in his finest. I think that will be done. No the journey is not so long, I think at our pace it shall take perhaps half a day if not a little more, if only for the carriage. Pack trunks..that should not be a bad thing. A woman needs her choice of clothing." "The ladies say Princess Davina picked her things very, very carefuly to be pleasing. She is already such a grand lady, even younger than I so I must be doubly so." After all they were going to wallow in a mud puddle after Roric teased them, were they? She made the resolution. Kendrew listened to the talk of women with straying eyes, but it was the same with men. The land was the bastian of many good images. Youth were learning the skills that Liliana, Jelenah, and Rosalind used to make a mark at Court. "What an honor that should be, such a world is open to all of you children." "Oh do you think, Da, to be among the ladies of the Queen, and the Princesses? Soon the years between Davina and I won't be much!" "I believe that when your time comes it will be no issue to have you placed among the Maids of Honor." The girl came around the table to throw her arms around Kendrew while Roric chuckled, "and you, I imagine you would wish a place among the honor guard, or among some clans great army? I have not yet pegged you for a man of calvary yet, the marshall mayhaps." Roric grinned big, and Glenna said, "What about me Daddy? Oh you shall be your heart's desire, a great lady, learned and brilliant. For now you may have more fun than those with chores." He hadn't told Glenna yet, but now was not the time, "How long will we stay in Struan? They say a great..trial..is going on there, what is a trial, Father?" He explained, but the world in a child's eyes would be all about seeing Dun Darroch, the festivity, the people! It would be about having the royal children as play fellows and perhaps a clansmen's child or three! He kissed Glenna's forehead, finding his stomach over full, but his heart half empty "How long, how long?" They all asked, never really having traveled much but save to the valley or the capital, "As long as your mother allows, and then you will do your business, and return, and can we stay more.." Kiley all but begged. "If it so please you." "Thank ye!" They quickly finished a meal so as to make their own preperations. Would any more of the court be going? Court was so terribly exciting to Kiley, and Glenna just enjoyed the stories.Roric would love to cast in his lot with he boys, measure his tartan to theirs. Soon it would only be the awkward too and their son, but even he needed a nap. He passed the sleeping boy towards one of the nursemaids as he bowed to the Lady of his life, not sure still what to say. He had no intention of not joining them in Struan, and did not disuade Kiley her desires. They matched his plans. He simply was poor at articulating it to Liliana who would accuse him at this point of lying no doubt, and he just couldn't stand to listen to that, so he went to make due with his feelings elsewhere. "Until later." (d)
Lady Liliana Campbell
"Go and remember to pack carefully. Try not to overload the trunks too much." Though such words were lost on deaf ears for already the children hurried to prepare. Kylie had Glenna on one hip just to speed up the process. Once the children left the silence couldn't be mistaken. Tension riddled the air, less noticeable in the presence of excited and chattering children, while the couple sat there. She didn't know what to say to him. Dropping eyes to the table, she murmured,"I will be prepared to leave on the morrow, husband. I will see if any of the ladies wish to travel with us, or any others, as well." It was only once he left the dining area with a simple farewell that she rose. Swallowing hard, she gave a smile to the nursemaid,"I will take my son. Could you please see to it that some of the ladies are sent to me? We have many preparations to make before dawn." Liliana hadn't any intention of returning to their chambers right now. Instead she decided the garden would be adequate. That realization brought a sad laugh at the situation. So at odds were they that it seemed they were even avoiding be alone with each other. Hugging Morgan close, Liliana whispered,"Ah, my boy, what will we do?" and moved down the hall to take shelter in the garden. (d)
Lord Kendrew Campbell
"That will do just fine. I am told that the some ladies have already gone with the Princess, perhaps more with you shall make a good assortment." Assortment? Bah, he never fiddled in talking with her sense he confessed himself of feeling. He deplored this dance of standing, this..unknown area neither of them wanted to step on. It was stupid really, but it was a matter of pride and a matter of not knowing what to make of it that kept them so bound. It was better to have left on the single word. He had tried to offer - something, but failed. Instead he took to the same bastian on a differing end. The end where he could look best at the Cullins, feel the sea air, and let himself go (d)

Lord Kendrew Campbell
