``Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.``

Ranald MacKenzie:
The Scot, or so he thought himself, was most happy to be away from France. It had been a rather close thing, with those hired killers after him. In the choppy seas of the Channel, he found safety. Well, relatively so, considering he was being taken to Skye in a smuggler craft. And there were another four people, all wrapped up in their cloaks who were also to be put ashore. It had cost Ranald extra to have his mount taken as well, but it was worth it. Those other gentlemen politely did not inquire as to his business, and he repaid the courtesy with him paying them no heed at all. Also it was wiser this way, and much safer. People who used smugglers to get ashore would be concerned with secrecy and apt to kill to preserve it. The crossing was rough but fast and speed was essential to him. If only he could make it to his destination, and if only someone would listen. But he did have to make the attempt.
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah had pretty much kept to herself at her aunts house in Arianna Hymodraeth, known better as the Valley of the stars. She had traveled back home to check on her father and came back a few weeks ago. Many things had changed, but for the most part, things had not changed to drastically for the former Avarian Princess. With things growing slow and the weather started to grow warmer, Brennah felt that today would be a wonderful day to venture out and take Asher out for a long over due extended ride. Rides through the Valley were nice, but you could only go so far with a horse in such terrain. Besides, it had been to long now since she had last visited the city. It had been right after breakfast she had saddled up and informed her relatives that she would be riding out to Turas Lan for the day. She even told them she might stay the night at a local tavern or inn, it just all depend on what she found herself doing at the days end. Since today was a day devoted to Asher, she decided to leave her female merlin, Darinah behind. The Lady however did not leave without some form of self protection, and for those that might dare to cross her today would surely find out.
Ranald MacKenzie:
The smuggler craft at long last slid onto the sands of the secluded cove that was their base. Carefully the Scotsman led his mount onto the sands, Warrior finding it much more comfortable then the heaving deck of a light craft in the English Channel. His passage already paid, Ranald asked directions to the capital, and then mounted and was off. It should have been easy for him with his years of soldiering on the continent, but it was not. He had not escaped unscathed from the assassins weapons; one dagger had gotten through. The small of his back was aching badly and he was pretty sure that it might have started bleeding again. Still, Turas Lan was closer now. All this for one overheard conversation. He had gone to Avignon to see about taking Papal service, but they were not interested. That was what interested him at the time. Popes were always wanting to hire good fighting men, but not now. Then he heard the reason. Immediately, he left the city and made his way to the coast. It was on this journey that the Papal assassins caught up with him. Four of them, but he managed to kill with his crossbow, sword and dagger. But one single thrust had gotten through.
Brennah Teagan:
The ride from the valley to Turas Lan had been pleasant enough so far and even though her aunt and uncle had suggested she have an escort of some sort, Brennah refused. However, she had the sneaking suspicion that one was following her as she knew her aunt and uncle to be just as stubborn as she and persistent in whatever they had their mind set on. Occasionally she would glance over her shoulder, thinking she heard someone but each time she looked, she saw nothing or no one out of the ordinary. With the weather steadily growing warmer, she wondered if maybe a ride down along the shore would be good. She knew the water was still much to cold, but the sights and sounds it offered would suffice for now. She would of course have to detour... but it would be well worth it in her opinion. The valley was nice, it was peaceful, and it was beautiful, but a change of scenery never hurt every once in awhile. As she rode along, she wondered who she might come across today. Maybe a couple of old friends, or maybe even make a new one. Ooo.. maybe she could go to the markets and see what sort of things were on display for today. Her mind began to wander on the possibilities on how to spend the day.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald was getting worse as he traveled along the shore on the road toward the capital. At least, he could still feel all of his extremities, and that was a good sign. The pressure from the horse's rider grew weaker and the speed of the mount slackened, until it was barely a walk. Somehow Ranald managed to keep conscious. With each passing moment it became more and more difficult. He saw no other on the road, and he needed help, as did Skye. Finally, on the very edge of surrendering of the pain, he heard the sound of another horse. Just as the rider came close, he saw it was a female, and then he could no longer keep his mind from going limp.
Brennah Teagan:
As Brennah ushered Asher further on, she thought she spotted something or someone up ahead... probably another traveler on their way to the city as well. However, as she drew closer, which came much to quickly with Asher's steady pace, she realized something was wrong. The rider seem to be slumping forward more and more and if something wasn't done soon, he was likely to fall from his horse. ``Excuse me.. Sir? Sir? Are you alright?`` Brennah inquired as she had Asher come up along side the other horse. Those blue eyes took in the form of the man and her eyes began searching for any signs of distress or tell tell signs of trouble. Upon looking harder and closer, she thought she spotted a dark coloration or maybe a stain on the lower portion of his back. The breeze came and went again as it had been during her ride, and it was here that her assumption was confirmed. The man was bleeding. ``Oh God, ... oh my... this is not good, not good at all.`` she said aloud, for herself more so than the man on his horse at her side. ``You need help... I need to get you to the city.`` she stated as she leaned over to try and grab the reigns of his horse. ``I'm not sure what happen to you or who you are, but you're in need of a physician and I intend to at least get you into the city safely. You need to hold on... Sir, can you hear me?`` she asked as she continued to lean to the side in hopes of a response.
Ranold MacKenzie:
A very faint voice did answer her. "Yes, I can hear you Lady." It's faint, but he rallies enough to continue. "Tie me to the mount if necessary." Again consciousness leaves him from shock and loss of blood.
Brennah Teagan:
She knew that in his state, he wasn't going to last long on the back of that mount and so in a panic stricken move, she acted quickly by dismounting Asher, reaching to her saddle bag and pulling from it a small amount of rope. She did just as the man suggested and tied him to his horse to keep him from falling off to one side or the other. Once she felt he was secure enough, she remounted Asher and with the reigns of the other horse in hand, the pair of them were off to the city in a hasty pace. It seemed like it would take her forever to get them there, but they did arrive to the city and rode down the streets. She knew Rose from the Briar Rose in might could help and not knowing if the Lady Physician was back from Eohmark, thought it best to have him in a room at the inn and have word sent for whom ever might be available. As the horses came to a halt at the inn, Brennah yelled. ``ROSE! MISS ROSE! I need your help!`` she yelled as she began to dismount and tossed the reigns of Asher to a boy near by and calling out to him to see him to the stable and she'd make it worth his trouble. She moved around to the man and with her hands working free the rope, she freed him. Rose came to the door to see what the fuss was about and immediately motioned for a couple of men to help the Lady Teagan. "Get him up to a room and I'll send for help. Lady Brennah, might be best for you to stay with him until help arrives. I will fetch you some things that may be of use while we wait." she said as she turned to head back in and get those items. Brennah followed the two men that now carried the injured man inside and up to a room.
Ranold MacKenzie:
The injured man did rally once or twice on the journey to the capital. He could not hold on to consciousness at all. He barely knew that he was being carried upstairs. Where he was he did not know, only that he was in someone's custody of a sort. He did at last feel the comfort of the bed. Yet his brain remained clouded, even as his eyes barely flickered open. "Who are you? Where am I?" That was all he could manage to articulate while keeping his eyes open. He looked on helplessly, unable to even move. To a man such as himself that was the most heinous act of all, unable to even defend himself; totally at anyone's mercy. And he did not even know if he was truly among friends.
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah nodded to Rose as she moved off and before the woman could disappear completely, asked her if she could have the boy that took Asher, to also take the gentleman's horse as well. Rose said she would take care of it and Brennah entered the room as the injured male was placed in the bed. ``Don't lay him on his back... put him on his side or his stomach, his injury is on his back.`` she said as the men had placed him down. They took their leave and shut the door behind them. Brennah moved to the bed side just as the man muttered his questions. She leaned down and answered him. ``My name is of no importance at the moment and don't worry, you will be alright. You are among friends.`` she said in a soft tone. Just then, Rose and another woman came in carrying several things that they thought might be needed and was better to have on stand by just in case. Especially if a physician or healer were to come soon. Rose and the woman excused themselves after telling Brennah they would wait down stairs to listen and watch for the help to arrive. Brennah looked from them to the man and then to the things that had been brought in, debating on if she should step in and try to help a little more.
Ranald MacKenzie:
His head covered in his jet black locks managed to get a vision of a most beautiful woman perhaps a few years younger then himself. With his body at least resting his brain was returning to action. Her hair was a most beautiful shade of brown and there was a determined look to her visage. "I am Ranald MacKenzie, professional warrior. My apologies for not introducing myself earlier M'lady." His strength was not great. He could speak no more, but he did manage to retain his consciousness, at least for the moment.
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah offered a smile in hopes to give him a sense of reassurance. ``A pleasure to meet you Ranald MacKenzie, though, I wish it were on better terms.`` she replied, the smile tugging a little more. She looked from him and to the items once more and fearing that should he become worse for a lack of time and effort that more could have been done on her part she bit at the corner of her lower lip and made up her mind. Looking back to him with those blue eyes of hers, she spoke up once more. ``I'm no healer or physician... but I do know a little something about basic wound care. Perhaps it would help if I were to take a look. Problem is.. we need to remove your clothing if you are able, unless you want me to cut through them. That is up to you...`` she said. It wasn't so much of just the seriousness of his injury, but the man was conscious enough to talk and he may be able to maneuver around to help her to remove the cloak and his shirt. ``The most I can do is maybe clean it.. and depending on how serious it is... stitch it up.`` Brennah had allowed her gaze to linger on the poor man perhaps a bit longer than she should have, especially in his state. It was hard to ignore how handsome he was.
Ranald MacKenzie:
"How could I not trust such a generous lady as yourself. You may remove whatever you need to attend my wound. And still I do not even know the name of my beautiful rescuer. Would you grace me with your name my ministering angel? " He actually manage to give her a weak smile. With his eyes clearing, she was even more beautiful. But he did not have time for any woman, not even one such as this who could charm the birds out of the trees. "Do what you must M'lady, I must be fit and soon." He could not tell her more, at least not yet. For now it must remain secret till those in power were told.
Brennah Teagan:
``I assure you Sir, I am as trust worthy as your very own mother and I will do my very best to see that I have helped you as much as I can.`` she replied as she removed her cloak and set it aside. When he made the comment about not yet learning her name, she smirked a little. ``Even in your state, you are quite the charmer. Only after I know you are well, will I give you my name. For now, you can call me Rose.`` While Rose was not her first name, it was part of her full name. He gave her permission then to do what she needed to see that he was fit and soon. `` Then I will have to see that you get new garments.`` she said as she let her hands come to remove the cloak after unclasping it from around his neck. It was easy enough to remove without having to cut it off. However, the dagger was pulled from her boot and with him laying on his stomach, it was allowed to cut down the middle of his shirt and splayed open to either side. The wound was then revealed. ``Might I ask how you got this?`` she inquired as she pulled the table with its items and a chair over closer to the bed side and settled in. The sleeves of her dress were rolled up and her hands were dipped in whiskey to clean and sterilize them before a cloth was taken up and dipped in the water. Once it was squeezed out, she would apply it to his affliction, dabbing it rather than wiping. ``Brace yourself.``
Ranald MacKenzie:
He smiled again. "Let us say that there were four of them" He paused before continuing, being most careful not to reveal too much. "I overheard a conveersation that I should not have. For now that will have to suffice M'lady Rose." He relaxed himself and prepared himself for the necessary pain to follow. "Let us get to it M'lady"
Brennah Teagan:
With his answer, she gave a simple nod and began to clean the wound and the area around it with just the water first. ``Just Rose will suffice... no need for formalities here.`` she stated with a small smile. Once she felt she had cleaned the affected area well enough with the water alone, a new bowl, with a new cloth and freshly poured whiskey was used next. She knew it was going to hurt like hell and whether or not he could see her face at times depending how he moved about and when, he might have seen the facial expression she wore as if she were the one about to feel the sting. The new cloth was dipped in the whiskey, squeezed out and then applied in the same manner the water had. With his injury clean, she could see how deep it was. It didn't look as if it was a stab... just a deep slice and she had tended to these sort of things before. ``Well, I think I can stitch this up.. it doesn't appear to be to deep to where a physician is needed. I've seen worse.`` Rose, from the Briar, was a God sent. The woman had thought of everything and already there on the table was a needle and horse hair. Once everything was cleaned properly, the needle was threaded. ``This is going to hurt. I wish there was something more I could do to lessen the pain.`` she was ready to begin, and all she needed from him was the go ahead to begin.
Ranald MacKenzie:
"Well, it does need to be stitched up Lady Rose." No matter what she said he felt it proper to add the honorific to her name. Something about her told him that it was required. This was no weak willed court slut of the type all too common on the continent; a type he was all too familiar with. This was a woman of real spirit, and he could tell that she had knowledge and skill with a dagger. He wondered what other weapons she had skill with. That was something for the future. First he had to get to the castle and to make them listen. And he could not waste too much time in doing it. He put on a smile to his face. "Go aheady M'lady Rose. The sooner begun, the sooner finished. Let it be done. I have confidence in your nimble fingers lovely lady." There, he did it again. Fool that he was, thinking of a woman at this time. He was as impetuous as ever. Now he girded himself for the small pain to come.
Brennah Teagan:
With his reply, she gave a firm nod and soon the needle began to pierce the skin as it was slightly pinched and held in place. She had remembered from times before that the zig zag stitching was much more efficient than the usual looping. While Brennah was a Lady of Royalty, she did have what most would deem horrible flaws. She wasn't one to flaunt her titles nor her wealth. Brennah tended to take part in events that most women would find unacceptable and had learned things that were well... for the lack of words, un lady like. Carefully, nimble fingers stitched up the wound on Ranald's back and once she was done, she would cleanse it one last time. After ward, she stood to her feet and began to clean up after herself so Rose (of the Briar) nor her staff would have to do to much. ``Now.. you just stay put for a while. You need your rest, so if there is anything you need then I hope you will allow me to see to it. Or perhaps the staff of this establishment.`` offered the Lady.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald remained totally silent during the lady's stitching up of the wound. It was indeed painful, but he was a most experienced warrior and he had undergone much worse. Campaigning on the continent taught you to take care of yourself in all too many cases. He was still most puzzled about this woman, who called herself Rose. He did not believe her for a single instant. Her demeanor and her language were of a much higher level, perhaps even Royalty. For the moment he would allow her this charade, because he did greatly appreciate her assistance. If she were of such a level, she might render him and even greater service in allowing him access to the Duke or Duchess. He feared that time was running out. "Thank you very much Lady. I may have need of your services when I am recovered." He pauses and then takes the risk. "I should very much like to see you even before then, noble lady." He smiled up to her.
Brennah Teagan:
It seemed no matter how little or how hard she tried to shed that Royal aura, it seemed it rarely worked in her favor. Apparently there was just something about her that would always stick out like a sore thumb. Brennah was careful as she moved about while cleaning up. However, after she was done, she took up residence in the chair at his bed side and relaxed a little. ``You are most welcome Sir, I'm sure had I been the one in trouble, you would have acted on my behalf as well. And need of me when you are recovered? Whatever for?`` she asked with a curious expression. When he then stated how he would like to see her even before this needed service, she chuckled. ``Here you lay with a terrible injury and you try even then to woo me.`` she said with a smile. ``Why would someone like you wish to see someone like me? I've only just met you...and you me...`` she said with a slight grin tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Even hurt Ranald could smile into her blue eyes. "Lady, I may well need you most desperately the moment I am recovered." Now he goes over the edge. "You are no Rose, no simple mistress. Your speech and carriage are at the very least of the nobility, or higher. If you have connections to the Lord and Lady of this land I need to use them and quite soon." Now he sort of licks his lips. This lady was something he had never met before and he truly did enjoy her company, even when he was conscious. "Truthfully, I would like to see more of you. On the continent, I have only met the usual court sluts and such, women who have nothing in their head and no fire in their hearts. You are so different, and I do like that difference. Do you think I would let just anyone tend to my would? Reveal yourself, even just to me if it needs be kept a secret. Please."
Brennah Teagan:
Both brows arched as he began to give his reply. Her head canted to the right as she looked to him for the side. ``Even if I did have connections to the Duchess and her husband the Duke, tell me as to why I must allow you to make use of them? I could be putting them in danger with a man that speaks as freely as you... myself as well.`` she replied. When he then spoke of needing to see more of her and how he had only come across those of dislike, she was a bit taken back and to cover it, she laughed. ``You are indeed a bold man to speak as freely as you do. Do you not worry of the consequences that such talk could render?`` she gave a shake of her head. ``There is no need for me to keep my identity secret to just you... many know of me and those who would wish for harm to find me, are long gone.`` she paused a moment. ``My name is Brennah Rose Teagan.`` She would of course purposely leave off Lady because she was indeed the daughter of a Lord, and the niece of a once been King. Something she didn't share with just anyone. Most who knew, had found out long after the fact and by other means other than from Brennah herself.
Ranald MacKenzie:
"Lady Brennah, I am honored to be so trusted. Please do not quibble; you are a Lady and deserve the title well." Ranald took a very long time to continue; there was much danger. In order to get her help he would have to give her something at least. "Very well, I was in Avignon looking perhaps to enter Papal service, as I was between employers at the moment. When has the Papacy ever refused the services of experienced soldiers. They did. Not hiring, I was told. Something just didn't sound right. And then I overheard a conversation which explained it. I made my way out of the city and headed for the coast. Skye was in danger. On the way I was accosted by four Papal assassins, who I managed to kill. The last one tried to strike me from behind; he got a good slash in, but he will never do it again. The Duke needs to be told that a special danger is facing him. He doesn't even it yet." He now speaks up proudly. "I consider myself a Scotsman, even though I was born abroad. I came home to save it."
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah swiveled about in her seat slowly to better face him. Her hands came to rest in her lap and rather than slump, she was sitting as straight as an upright arrow. Her brow was slightly furrowed, an obvious sign of her full attention in listening to him as he spoke. ``Think what you will and call me Lady if you must. But if what you say is true, that the Duke is in danger, then yes, we will go to him as soon as you have healed well enough and inform him of this threat. As for being a Scotsman, I am much in the same boat as you. For my father is Scottish and my mother Welsh. We have much in common, you and I.``
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald's dark eyes bored into her blue ones for many long moments, as if he were trying to bore into her very soul. He had unnerved many with this look. It did not phase this lady, who did not even flinch. And the warrior did indeed appreciate such a quality. "Lady Brennah I do think we have much in common, perhaps even more then you realize. Both I and Skye will have reason to thank you. How long before I can get up? Time is most crucial. I cannot stress that fact too much. When can you get me to the Duke or Duchess, and before they proclaim themselves King and Queen?"
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah could be made to flinch given the right time, person and reason. However, at the moment, she hardly felt there was any reason to flinch from this mans words, much less his looks. She smiled a little when he seem to agree that they did have a lot in common. How much though would remain a mystery, at least for a while. She laughed a little when he said that both he and Skye will have reason to thank her soon. ``Think nothing of it.. I am doing for those that I feel that would do for me. As for how long it will be before you can get up? I should say by morning, with caution of course. You need rest and nourishment tonight. It is late in the day and already night comes. It would be best to seek audience with the Duke and the Duchess in the morning hours I would think.`` there was a slight shrug of her shoulders with a glance to the left made before she looked back to him. ``I'll see if Rose can't bring something up for us.`` Brennah then stood to her feet and moved over to the door. The door was cracked open to start with and then when she spotted a maid, she called out to her only to request food and drink for both herself and Ranald. The door was then closed and Brennah returned to her seat.
Ranald MacKenzie:
"I would also feel much better if you remained here Lady Brennah" His facial expression was something between embarrassed and a grin. "For your own protection of course" He had to add in that last quickly before he made a total fool of himself. There was indeed something about this lady that set her apart from others and it was not simply her nobility. True, she had spirit, but that was not all of it, but a great contribution. It was the way she responded to every situation and was never caught unaware or even unprepared. He did like that about her. A woman of distinction. He managed to pull out an image of her from the journey to the capital; she rode astride the horse like a man. It crossed his mind that she might have a few more skills, usually reserved for men. It would be interesting to find out more about this Lady Brennah. And just as soon as he had discharged his duty to Scotland, he make a point of learning more of her.
Brennah Teagan:
As she reclaimed her seat, she shifted so that her body twisted slightly to better face him with an arm draped over the back of the chair and anchored by her hand. When Ranald said he thought it best for her to stay here, there was a mixture of her own expressions. One of blushing and smirking. ``Of course Sir Ranald, of course, but only because you insist.`` Brennah's lips seem to disappear for a moment as they were taken in by her mouth. A glance down was made before she looked to the door, as if expecting their order to arrive any moment. When there was no knock at the door, she looked back to Ranald. She could see that he seem to be deep in thought, or puzzled perhaps. At least that was what she would assume based by the expression on his face. ``There is something that troubles you?`` she asked as let her eyes look him up and down from head to toe. It was here she realized that she had failed to cover him back up after tending to his wound. ``My apologies.. I don't know what came over me to have me forget that you would become cold.`` she said as she quickly moved to her feet. Would you like for me to remove your boots and to cover you up?``
Ranald MacKenzie:
"You are most kind Lady Brennah. Yes, I would be more comfortable without my boots and covered up. Unless, of course, you would prefer to keep looking at my naked body." Ranald could not help grinning at his comment. Now what would her response be to that? He was already attracted to her, admittedly he did not know her well. Yet there was just something about her, and it was not just how well she filled out the gown she wore either or that face that could easily haunt a man for eternity. And just maybe he might be that man. Then he shook his head to clear it. This was crazy thinking, but he could not get her face out of his mind even when he was not looking at her. He took a very deep breath after that.
Brennah Teagan:
``I try to be...`` she said with a smile before giving him a look that almost said yeah right when he made the comment about her preferring him naked. Such a thought brought color to her cheeks even as she tried to rid her mind of such a vision due to his bold comment. ``I hardly call this naked... yes, you are without a shirt, but you still have on other articles of clothing and there fore are not nude.`` she commented back as she moved to the foot of the bed to remove his boots one at a time. Once that was done and his boots were put aside, she moved up to the side of the bed and pulled the covers over him. To ensure he stayed nice and warm, added his own cloak over that. It was then, the knock to the door came and the announcement of food and drink had arrived. Brennah looked to Ranald a moment and then to the door before quickly opening it and pointing to the other small table in the room to put everything. ``Could you see if Miss Rose might could spare some extra linens. Enough to make a pallet on the floor? I would greatly appreciate it.`` she asked the maid as the woman nodded and began to take her leave. Brennah then turned her attention to the food and the table it was on, carefully she slide it over to where it would be placed between his bedside and her chair. He might not be able to sit up right to eat, but at least he could prop up on his side to get a little nourishment. Brennah reclaimed her seat once more and began to uncover all the food before pouring them each something to drink.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald smiled up unto her eyes once again, but this time it was a lighter, less intense smile, just friendly and unabashedly admiring. He took the drink most happily. "Thank you Lady, I find myself most hungry and thirsty at this time. Your kindness is most appreciated. And truly, I do enjoy your company. Tis not often I find myself in the company of such a beautiful woman; a woman of many talents." He continued to smile. And then he thought of the morrow and the hurdles he must surmount to get to the Duke and Duchess. And would they even believe him? No matter, he had a gut feeling that with this woman there would be no obstacle to stop them.
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah looked across the table to him for a moment and caught that smile of his. She gave one in return, slowly, and it was one that was warm and genuine. ``You are most welcome. Now eat... then we'll rest for the night so that you might rise early to go and speak with the Duke.`` There were several things to choose from as gar as food was concerned. It was a tray that consisted of meats and cheeses. A loaf of freshly baked bread with fresh churned butter on the side. A small honey pot too... There were also fruits from the season along with small Roma tomatoes and of course water and mead to drink. Brennah then looked to Ranald. ``Sir Ranald, really... you are much to generous with your words.... but thank you.`` she said in a slightly bashful tone while wearing an expression to match.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald shook his head slowly. "I am not being generous, only honest. Most would not have even stopped to aid a wounded man. But you did. And that alone makes you most special. And believe me, you have done much for me and for Skye." His smile widened, as he reacted to hers. He more and more wanted to know this lady. She was special in the very best of ways. Then he came back to reality. In a matter of days or even hours, they might be fighting for their lives. This was not the time to be thinking of wooing a maiden. He had never been squeamish and sex was easy in the army camps he had been in for years. Still Brennah was a sort of woman he had never met, and he liked her.
Brennah Teagan:
``I'll not argue with you... at least not this night, you are a wounded man who needs a meal and rest. What sort of woman would I be if I were to argue with a man when he is not whole?`` she said with a grin. Brennah was not shy when it came to eating. Most of the women she knew cut their food into tiny little pieces and chewed as if they were likes cows with cud in taking forever before swallowing. Brennah's bites were of average size, and her pace was steady as she sampled a little of everything that had been brought to them. Occasionally after a bite, she would glance up and over to Ranald. Sometimes a smile was granted, while other times she simply let her attention return to her food. By the time Brennah was finished with her meal, there was a knock on the door. A cloth napkin was brought to lips to wipe away anything to be found before she moved over to the door. When she answered it, she found a couple maids standing there with both linens and a cot. Everything was brought in, set up and left for the Lady before they excused themselves after bidding goodnight to both Brennah and Ranald. Once the door was closed, Brennah moved over to her bed for the night and made a couple adjustments. This would give Ranald some time to enjoy his meal in peace if he wished.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald smiled at the food that was brought in to them; even the smell was intoxicating. He had not eaten for over a full day, and not much before that for a few other days while he was running for the coast, trying to get away from Avignona and to Skye. Wounded or not, he was famished and he showed it, not being shy about large wolfish bites. Even the chilled water was delightful to his parched throat. He even smacked his lips once or twice. "My apologies Lady Brennah, but I have not had such an excellent meal in some time." He was not shy around women and it showed. "You must allow me to take you to dinner after this is over. I must give you a proper thank you for such excellent treatment. It will truly be my pleasure for I can see that you do truly enjoy a good meal. I do hate the women who eat like a chipmunk; I appreciate a woman with a healthy appetite and the spirit you've shown today." He leaned over and smiled boldly to her.
Brennah Teagan:
As he continued to eat, she would look to him a few times between bites. She was glad to see he was hungry and that he had an good appetite. His wolfish bites were of no concern to her and knew that most men, proper or not, tended to eat like... well, men. ``There's no need for an apology Sir Ranald. For you have traveled far and a journey such as your own would make any man eat as if he was starving.`` she replied with a smile. Head canted to the side then after moving back over to the table and stealing a bite of bread smeared with butter and honey. ``Take me to dinner to properly thank me? That is very thoughtful and kind of you but its not necessary. Just seeing you well is thanks enough for me.`` Brennah had no idea that he may have also been wanting to treat her to such on account for other reasons. ``Yes, U suppose I do.`` she said with a bit of a light chuckle. ``As I would have to agree with you on that. I honestly do not see how they get full with such eating habits.``
Ranald MacKenzie:
The wounded warrior had a good laugh at that. "Yes, the sluts, at least the ones I've known on the continent. Why you grow up in military camps, those are the only women you meet. And when you become a recognized warrior you meet them in court. Better manners, better dressed, but the same kind of woman; they look you over with that same predatory stare, not caring whether anyone saw it or not. And that includes their husbands, who are well familiar with their activities. I admit to never being comfortable with that." His face takes on a most determined, almost fierce demeanor. Then he regains his control. "I fear I must own up to something Lady. You have called me Sir Ranald more then once. I have never been awarded the accolade of knighthood. I have no care whether I received it or not. These days it it more a mark of being a courtier; not the warrior it was first designed for." He remains quiet for some long moments concentrating on his food. Then he adds to his last statement. "I am what I am, a warrior."
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah took to leaning up against the wall with that piece of bread in hand as she listened to him speak on the types of women he has met. She had to chuckle a couple times as she shook her head with hearing such things. ``I guess its safe to assume that some women care little of what others think of them when it comes to matters of... lust. For I find it hard that real love would have a woman acting in such a way... or even men.`` she said with a shrug of her shoulders. The last bite of her bread was taken and she stepped over to take up the glass of water she had been drinking from moments ago. After a swallow of the cool refreshing liquid was taken, she set the glass aside. ``I apologize then if I've offended you in by doing so. I was raised to address all men and women as Sir or Lady despite rank or money. Even those less fortunate than us deserve acknowledgment, at least that's how my family viewed it.`` When Ranald went quiet, Brennah did as well and moved back over to the cot. She sat down on it and began to remove her boots. Yes.. Brennah tended to wear boots with her dresses rather than slippers. Slippers never lasted long enough for her. Besides, her dresses were always long enough to hide her footwear on most days.
Ranald MacKenize:
Ranald considered her words for a few moments before replying. "Your family is most ..............." He struggled for a moment to find the right word. "respectful of others. It is something that I no longer look for in people; it is most rare, I assure you. I am honored by reference Lady Brennah. And I honor your family as well. He smiled warmly, almost brazenly at her. In truth he did like her already. When he saw her wearing boots, it confirmed his suspicions. Come tomorrow, he would wager that she possessed some well developed fighting skills. It pleased him to be putting an end to a desperate mission with a fighter beside him; not to mention that said fighter was a most beautiful woman. And that thought made him smile even more.
Brennah Teagan:
``Thank you, it would please my father and mother both to hear you say that and to know that perhaps others share their views. Society is sometimes much more harsh than it should be.`` she commented back, wearing a smile of her own. Her boots were put aside, and she continued to keep the knee high knitted stockings upon her legs. They served well in keeping the leather boots from rubbing her skin raw. She sat silently then and adjusted her covers a little as she prepared to slid between the sheets, yes, fully clothed. He was a stranger and well... stripping down to nothing but her chemise was not an option here. She wasn't a virgin still for no reason.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald never minced words and never kept silent when he had something to say. "Lady Brennah, have you any fighting skills? I'm asking because I believe all of us are going to be fighting very soon. It is no small matter. What I know frightens me to very core of my soul." His face and body suddenly looked as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. "I am not being melodramatic. We may well have the entire continent of Europe against us, and very soon. All will be needed to wield blades, axes, or anything they can." His voice is coldly serious, as he looks over to her, wishing he could say something jovial. He was too honest, and he knew the probably fate awaiting them all.
Brennah Teagan:
Head lifted and eyes shifted as she looked to him oddly. ``I have some skill... but I am no seasoned warrior.`` she answered, not yet elaborating on just what it was she was skilled at. His worry became her concern and she studied him a moment as he spoke again. ``I am sure that whatever threatens these land, its people, and its sovereign, will be greatly surprised at what they will come face to face with.`` she added after those few moments of silence passed. She wasn't exactly sure what else to say and so it seem that the quietness of the room would take over them both for the time being until one of the other thought of something to speak about. Slowly and carefully, Brennah began to lower herself as she slide beneath the covers. Her head came to rest on the pillow and her eyes were still in Ranalds direction. However, if and when he should look her way, she would of course look else where, not wanting to seem rude or thought of as staring.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Just as swiftly as he deadly serious mood enveloped him did it evaporate. He looked in her direction and saw her quickly look away. "It's alright you can look at me, I have nothing to hide from you." He did smile as well. "Perhaps all will be well and Skye will continue in peace and prosperity. Perhaps someday then, I could marry and begin a family. Tis a dream not fit for most soldiers; we have a tendency to die young of course. In that profession, how can you truly plan for the future. Either by the sword on one of the ills so prevalent in the camps; few last to old age. I do pray things will be different at least for me." He said the last very quietly, as if he were speaking only to himself, and no one else was present.
Brennah Teagan:
She looked back to him when he said she could look at him and felt a little heat in her cheeks. However, she didn't comment back on the matter and let it fade off on its own. ``I think Skye will rise above it like it always has.`` there was a pause.``I'm sure that someday, for those of us that want more in life, will eventually get it if we hang on a little longer.`` There was another pause as she stared up at the ceiling. ``Family is not kept from warriors alone of course.`` she commented. Barely able to hear his last comment, she looked over to him. ``I'm sure things will change for the better for you. Just give it time.``
Ranald MacKenize:
Hearing her last comment he looked back in her direction. "Time is one thing not usually granted to a warrior. I've seen too many fall to believe otherwise. It is not right for a man to leave a widow and babe and no way of support, at least no legitimate way. They sell the only thing they can for their child who grows up in the same squalor and death. The boys become warrior because there is no choice. The girls also learn to sell their only asset. With every campaign there are always more widows and orphans. If we must fight, let us fight a cause that is truly worthwhile. Most of the wars are over causes quickly forgotten, but the dying goes on." For a moment his head hangs low. Then he recovers. "I am sorry M'lady about my thoughts being so dark, but it has been my entire life until now. He now looks a bit ashamed of what he had said.
Brennah Teagan:
``I understand... and can see why one would feel as you do when it is all you have known.`` She felt for him... to not have known anything truly good. She wasn't sure what else to say on the matter really and when he apologized, she gave a shake of her head. ``Do not apologize for something you have had no control over. We all sometimes feel we have reached a point in our lives where things are not what we think they should be by a certain time.`` she was laying on her side now with her hands together and tucked beneath the pillow under her head. ``Maybe not everyone was meant to find someone.... but there are those, like yourself, that I am certain will find happiness. Real happiness... not something that will just up and vanish without word or reason.`` was she now speaking of self experience?
Ranald MacKenzie:
The warrior listened most carefully to her word, especially the kindness that she administered to him. "You have not found one to share your life. But I think you still have hopes. Till now I have had none. Even coming here did not make me think that my destiny was any different. But now, after hearing you, for the first time in many years, I have hopes. I thank you M'lady; this is a most precious gift." His face had changed dramatically and now it seemed that an aura of calm and serenity appeared about him. He was most changed as he spoke to Brennah and he looked at her in a different way as well.
Brennah Teagan:
``I thought I had at one time, but... it was not meant to be.`` she simply shared. ``Perhaps one day, I will be as so lucky to find something even better than what I once had.`` she said with a soft smile. It was a nice thought. She saw the change in Ranald and this made her smile a little more. She was glad to at least have given him a little bit of hope. `` You are welcome.`` she replied back simply. It had been years now since she had been the once engaged Lady. Only a few weeks after accepting such a proposal, the man who had been responsible for her happiness was now responsible for the sadness she had experienced. Over time of course, that slowly faded and she gave little thought to courting again.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald smiled inwardly. He made a note to press that dinner invitation. He was sure that it would be a most pleasant experience for the both of them. For sure he would consider the company most excellent. "You know M'lady, I do intend to have you accept my invitation to dinner. I should very much like to spend time with a lady such as yourself, a real lady." he looked toward her and smiled most broadly; in his mind she truly was a lady, unlike so many who claimed the title. Brennah was most worthy of the title and perhaps even more. He shook his head to clear it. This was silly. He had just met her. Yet, there was something that drew him to her. Perhaps after his mission concluded, then at dinner he could explore these feeling at their leisure.
Brennah Teagan:
When Ranald next spoke, it had her looking to him once more with an odd expression, maybe something with a bit of amusement mixed in with it. ``I will accept your offer to dinner on one condition.`` she said with a grin. ``If you can tell me what color my eyes are. If you were a real gentleman, then each time we have spoken, you would have looked to my eyes when speaking to me.`` she said with a smirk before turning as to hide her face from him and to keep him from seeing her eyes. With now her back to him, she awaited his answer... should he know her eye color, then she'd go to dinner with him one night. If not, perhaps he would guess better next time when she put him to the test if he were to ask her again to dinner.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald smiled at the challenge. It was simply another reason he did enjoy this lady's company. She would not make it easy for him, not for a second. "I believe M'lady we shall have that dinner and quite soon. You may turn around because your most beautiful eyes are are a most beautiful blue." he did enjoy the bit of teasing. She did what no other female had ever accomplished; she made him relax and even smile. It was a truly good feeling; he wished to have much more of it. A voice inside him said that it was only this woman who could accomplish this task, and he did fully agree with that voice. "Now, do you have any special preference for a location?"
Brennah Teagan:
``Ah ah... not just yet... there is one other minor detail...`` she said as she half rolled toward him. ``I will give my answer only if you agree to my request.`` she added as she finally rolled to face him fully. ``Promise me to call me only by my name when it is just the two of us. No Lady... simply Brennah will do.`` she said with a grin. ``Should you do this... I will name my location come morning. If not... then there will be no need to name it if this dinner is not to take place.`` she said with a bit of a smirk. The covers were pulled up a little more now and while balled up about her chest, part of the covers had been tucked under her arms.
Ranald MacKenzie:
He did smile, for this was a most unlooked for acceptance on her part. "I beg pardon Brennah. I was only granting you the same respect you have granted me. Yet I am truly most pleased to accede to your request, most pleased indeed." Ranald tried not to let himself get took excited over this, but it was so welcome to him; it was a grand beginning. Yet he could so easily sense that this was no woman meant for mere pleasure or lust. She was one to keep for all time. He was disconcerted; he had never felt like this before, never even one bit. What could be driving him so? It could only be the mysterious Brennah. He knew that there was much more to her then she had told him, and he did desire to find it out.
Brennah Teagan:
She gave a girlish giggle in response to his reply. Even though he did speak the truth... she couldn't but help think how amusing it was to have him agree to her stipulations anyway. The idea that anyone wanted to take her dinner that was of the opposite sex hadn't crossed her mind in years. However, suddenly she found herself looking to it with a kind of anticipation that had not been known for quite some time now. She was most curious to see how this would play out and if t would lead to other things. Brennah tried not to get too excited of course, she didn't want to set herself up for disappointment. Not so much on his part, but her own. `` Then it is settled Ranald, we shall dine together again soon but on better and different terms.`` she said with a wide smile. ``But now.. now we must find rest. For you have to rise early to go and speak with the Duke.`` She stifled a yawn and let her eyes close for a moment and then opened them again to see if he was going to do the same.
Ranald MacKenzie:
Ranald could not be agree with her, and in truth all the running and traveling had wearied him. A good night's sleep before seeing the Duke would be a good thing. He was most happly that Brennah had finally agreed to their dinner. It was a most cheerful thought to go to sleep with and perhaps even dream. He stopped himself. It would be but dinner. Where it might lead was quite another question. He would tread carefully with Brennah. And she he believed would be more then worth such an effort. "Good night Brennah. I am most glad that you will be the first face I see when I awaken." God in Heaven, how had his brain allowed his mouth to say such a thing. And once said it could not be taken back. He only hoped she did not think him over bold or even brazen. But for now, he could only keep silent.
Brennah Teagan:
Brennah would stare over at him for a long while, she heard him as he spoke and with a nod, she replied back. ``Good night Ranald.`` she of course had not expected to hear what had followed, but it brought a smile to her lips as she shifted and curled under the covers more. Within the next few moments, Brennah's bright blue eyes were hidden by the pale soft lids laced in chocolate lashes. Her breathing slowed, her body relaxed and she was soon sound asleep. Hopefully, Ranald would find his own peaceful slumber. For he had quite the task ahead of him when day light broke.
Ranald MacKenize:
Ranald looked at her for long moments, desperately pleased that she had not rebuked him. He saw her lips formed into a beautiful smile at his words. His face equaled hers, and just as happily. His eyes closed with the image of her imprinted in his mind. He could almost hear and see her breathing. Then, bit by bit, inch by inch, his body relaxed and his eyes closed gently. His breathing slowed and he found himself sound a sleep.
