Kendrew "Have ye seen the Lady Campbell taeday?" The question was one the Lord Campbell asked often. Necessity deemed he know where she was at all times, if only for the sake that a husband worries of his wife. Or was it the old habits of the Lord Guardian hadn't died despite his residence now in Drynoch? Peace agreed with Kendrew. Whatever rumbled of the familial affairs did so on the Scottish coast with enough miles twixt him and infamy. The question told of his love when followed with a smile too boyish for a man slated to be 40! The fields were being prepared to lay in for the winter, the air still held the last harvest's ripe wheats. Mists curled on the valley's edge. Life made him near delirious with happiness. (d)
Liliana: Winter's approach was never fondly looked forward to except by the children who eagerly anticipated snow. It meant the decline of warmer weather and the need for thicker clothing. Liliana, in fact, had become more adept at the making of latter due to the need for it. Having a husband and two children meant lots of mending. It was Mother Campbell who helped to further her learning. Going from being able to just mend clothing to making it was something interesting. If anyone had known in her in the younger years they'd be surprised by the contentment to be found in the woman. A woman who had preferred the freedom to roam to staying in one place and would have wrinkled her nose at the mere idea of womanly duties. Now there was joy taken in each one. Teaching Kylie how to bake or sew, and watching Roric out in the fields with Kendrew while they did so was something that filled her heart. Having just left Kylie and Roric, along with Lara and Mother Campbell, to finish filling jars full of jam- she wandered outside into the chilly air to cool her cheeks. She'd been in the kitchen all morning and though enjoying it, everyone needed a break. Removing her apron to place it on a peg just inside, Liliana's brown eyes moved along the view. Their land, their home, it was something that she still wasn't used to. And when asked about by her husband, that is where he'd be directed to- where she wandered along their land at a leisurely pace of perusal with dark hair confined in a braid and skirts toyed with by a breeze. (d)
Kendrew:"She's been makin' ready for the cold season all day m'lord.." Jars of compotes and preserves would likely be the culprit. A house of smoking meats would lend to a guilty verdict for further occupation. Was there a sewing needle involved? Simple tasks compounded in the Lord's head to paint an exact replica of a childhood in Dumfries. While Lara and his mother were busy in the kitchens, the men took to the fields by doing what plowing they could muster before the ground became to impossible to manage. Now it was the perfect point between the late fall and the hints of winter's arrival. A poignant chill in the air punctuated the end of his long-ago portrait so that as the last color faded on the air as only he saw it, he advanced to the directed place. Liliana mused as much as she was one, thought as much as she inspired it. For a long time he stood on a hillock a small piece away from her, watching. If a woman's cheeks grew pink from the heat of her kitchen, what else might set them aglow? Mother Campbell was noted by all the staff for her hints of deeming Liliana fertile as the sill was toiled over for next year's crops. If this were all he worried over, than God be praised. "What news from the kitchen, wife?" he began his advance after he'd grown jealous of the wind touching her, instead of him, "Has Kiley made her own good loaf yet?" (d)
Liliana:It was not any secret that a child was most desired. Oh, Liliana loved Kylie and Roric as if they were her own- there was not a doubt to be found in anyone's mind where that was concerned. Even if a child of her own was born it'd change nothing in the way she looked upon those precious children. Much advice was taken gratefully from Mother Campbell concerning the matter of conception. It was something that made Liliana both excited and nervous at the prospect after what had happened before. Though now instead of looked on with the sorrow that allowed it to control her life instead it was something to learn from. What to do, what not to do, and signs to observe. Liliana had never really had a mother of her own, but that seemed to have been remedied when meeting Kendrew's Mother who had become like her own as well. Quiet musings such as these always wandered through Liliana's head, guiding her feet on a path not even seen, when she took a break. At times did Liliana dearly miss living at the castle, being close to Bess and Adam and Aodhan, and the others- but this was home. The turn of a dark head at the sound of Kendrew's voice and lips curved into a wide smile of welcome at the handsome sight of her husband. She didn't think her heart would ever not quicken upon merely looking at him nor did it seem possible for her love to increase anymore...yet it did every passing day. "Oh, news of the hard work of women husband. Though later once we finish the jars we might need some aid from your strong arms to carry it all. Lara has assured me that I have done well in stocking to see that you are kept from withering away." Teasing words as she paused in her steps to watch him approach, hands clasped behind her back and head slightly tilted to the right. "Kylie has made two good loaves. We will eat one with dinner this eve to celebrate. What news from the fields?" (d)
Kendrew: It was time to think on an heir of the two of them, Lara had said to her brother as they sat on the long front steps of the home. He only smiled, for it would be a woman such as herself to goad her brother for another child to spoil. He wanted a child so that he could see the best of both him and Liliana in their eyes. For that reason, he too missed Turas Lan. It was at no lack of resource or sage wisdom. Still, it was time for a bit of observed glory to be their own. He pulled Liliana up into his arms and had a care not to bring her to hard on the tip of her toes. "Aye, news of my women. Now that I know we won't starve through the winter, and I shan't grow skinny as you dislike, we all may rest a bit. I will carry what my lady tells me carry." He kissed her forehead, then the bridge of her nose, lastly her mouth. On hearing of Kylie's success at two loaves, he did beam with a father's pride. "She did nay burn it this time, n' has two to show for it. Huzzah!" Once he had to repair the ovens in the kitchen for the young girl's enthusiasm for baking turning to a child's forgetfulness. "The fields are all a'tended. We have the last of the grain, the meat is near done being smoked, the new racks hung up in the other shed after the butcherin..the soil ready for the fallow season. Roric has a good command of plow horse now. But come..it seems my work is done, yours is done." He turned in no particular direction, her hand tucked in his as he began to walk. (d)
DreamsOfWriting [2:57 P.M.]: One would be shocked at how gentle and tender a man such as Kendrew could be. Even now as he pulled her close to offer up a kiss it was done with care. She had been lucky to catch such a man as he. That thought made her brown eyes soften with love and she kissed him back soundly. "Rest? What is this word? I would not know what to do with myself." Liliana did not truly mind the work though. Never had she had to prepare for winters approaching for her own family. Smiling up at him once feet touched the ground fully again, she gladly accepted his hand to walk with him. "Kylie is a remarkable child. She learns fast though like any child her age has to be taught to keep focus. I have also heard Roric's adventures in the field. He has a good head upon his shoulders that one. When winter comes, since it will be harder to travel, I have decided to take over their lessons a bit. I do not believe myself as good as the Lady Kaori, but it is too risky to travel far in the winter months." Talk of home, of children and learning, it chased away the chill of the wind. Peace could be found for once with the end of the war and Kendrew's being home, and there was not anymore need to worry about the safety of her husband or her home- of Skye. (d)
Kendrew:"Tha' will be good. The Lady Kaori will have less tae think on lessons for a time, I have heard she has given birth to a beautiful child, and her and the Captain de la Costa are thrilled by it. So then, we will make a few more trips across the land before the snows, a good visit for yourself and the Lady's before I steal you home again." He smoothed her hair back with the palm of his calloused hands. A man who fought campaigns could be the same man who treated those in his life with equal amounts tenderess, appreciation, and frailty. Dreams could be broken in the blink of an eye; none would ever say of him that he took for granted one moment in her company, one kiss, one glance. He knew it was only God's blessing that gave him Liliana, returned Lara and his mother Donna to him. It was only fortune that gave him Kiley and Roric. Just as it was the same fortunes that increased their wealth and brought good settles to the new Campbell sept family. Fortunatly winter stalled things - horse hooves, wagon wheels, and any further entertainment of Neil's foolishness. No war drums to be beaten, no dirges to sing. For the first time in many years Kendrew saw that peace was not a metaphor tossed in pretty poems, but a factual experience. "Besides, if you tire of my mother and Lara, they shall retire to their own home, if you grow lonesome, they are not far. Nor are other women who have settled since the summer. Aye, n' close still are both the Lord General's wife and the Lord Apollo's wife." He elected Drynoch as settlement because of the Valley's advantages of beauty, accessibility, and persons within. "Though I hope with less need of me, I won't burden you too much. Being so bored a man reliant upon his Lady wife..." he teased her, poking her sides as they walked a leasurely pace. He went quiet for somewhile. Kendrew, too, was a thoughtful man. Upon opening his mouth again his voice was a soft baritone, :Aye, a fine Lady wife indeed. Our home runs well. N' the people are pleased. I could nay be moreblessed to have ye in such a place, Lady Campbell. It suits you." (d)
Liliana: The tidings of Kaori and Marcos' new addition brought the widening of her smile as she glanced to her husband then forward again as they walked. "That is wonderful news indeed. I must send them well wishes. Kaori is a woman I deem a close friend after all we women went through. You husbands tend to cause us much worry. It is a wonder our heads did not turn gray." Goodnatured teasing as she gave a squeeze of the hand that was still held with fingers twining through his. In truth it had, for all the ugliness of war and the concern it'd caused, made Liliana appreciate what she had much more. She had every intention of living each day to the fullest and holding those she loved as close as possible. What was the point of being alive if one did not live? One corner of her mouth quirked up at his words though,"I could not grow tired of Donna or Lara though I would gladly allow them more nights with the children at their own homes if they desire it." Liliana was not unaware of the plotting between the two women. "Aye, I plan to pay visits to them upon occasion. I do not intend to let winter keep me shut away inside for all of its entirety. As for you, my husband, you could never become a burden." Turning her head to place a kiss against his cheek, a joyous sparkle drifted into her gaze,"It does suit me, husband, and it suits you as well. You made me a promise before the war, when you left, and I could not have imagined that this..." Raising her other arm, she motioned to the land around them,"would be the results. I could not have foreseen my life turning out so wonderful." (d)
Kendrew:"Lara told me she will take Kiley and Roric after supper to the town to one of the little barn festivals, and keep them a three day.." He was no better off when it came to plotting. Who was he to deny a grandmother and aunt the chance to spoil their own? It gave him a chance to be with Lily as they were in the beginning; to pace about in leisure, to talk at length on all and nothing, and to love fully. On talk of promises he nodded, "I always knew it would be tha' way. Tha' is the truth. A man gives a woman a home fit for her, and more so a Lady deserves no less than a good home fittin' her station." Half grin aside, he spoke no fable. He would not have moved her to the village of Drynoch itself and given her merely a garden. He would not have given Lara and his mother merely a clapboard shed beside them. He was accustomed to hard work to acquire recompense, and having bled his pint and given his flesh pound, all he sought was an equitable portion of land. The Aberdeens at last made his leave possible, allowed him to train men for what lay ahead of them. Youth went across the seas to serve in the squabbles of allies when their blood ran too hot to sit still. His life consisted of their instruction, the land, settlers, and of matters in Campbell make so docile it made those who'd emigrated from Loch Awe give pause in amazement. (d)
Liliana: "Three days?" Brows furrowing at that thought, she shook her head,"Are you sure about this? It's three days in town and..." Realization dawned a moment later with a soft laugh,"I'm being far too protective. They will be in good hands with Lara. I just do not know what it will be like not to have them under foot for three days." Liliana did truly yearn for some alone time with her husband even though she loved their family. Smiling softly, she murmured,"Lady? Nay, just a wife and mother, Kendrew. That title does not compare to the other two. You could have given me a little cottage with two rooms, and I'd have found joy in it. You, husband, are a wonderful man and I cannot still believe some days that I caught you." Brown eyes lit with a playful light as she recalled days long ago,"I could have lost you to the hands of all those young maidens I remember trying to catch you in that tavern." Liliana could not yet believe how fast she'd found her heart filled with him. They'd went from mere acquaintance to friend to lovers to...husband and wife. And now, here they were, walking their own land with hands entwined and shoulders left unweighted except for the light concerns of preparation for winter. (d)
Kendrew: "I did nay want any maid nor any lauded woman, for that matter. I would have waited until I was sixty to wed, if e'er at all. The thought did not cross my mind o'er much until I met you." He did not smile here but his voice was soft with the weight of more revelation. His smile came as he kissed her hand, patting it to soothe worries, "Lara n' Mother will preserve, n' you shall be a lady of leisure these three days next. I have made it so the Lady Campbell will do no work save that which gives her pleasure. " They came to an oak tree. The roots were old and twisted on each other, the boughs long. He liked this tree, as much as he liked anything old and stable. (d)
Liliana:Blushing at the seriousness of his tone, Liliana's eyes sparkled with pleasure at them. It was clear by that alone that what he said meant much to her though her words were teasing,"There is not a lauded woman nor maid who could handle you as I do, husband. Most women would have a fit of the vapors trying to manage you. Not I though. Unlike them I know how to soothe your ire and turn you from grouchy to smiles." And she did, indeed. She was a stubborn woman and though some men would have thrown up their hands managing her at times...they were lacking. Kendrew had not been chased away by all the baggage of her past nor frightened away by her spirit. They both had a way of knowing the other inside and out. "Three days of leisure. It sounds heavenly. Will I be left to my own devices during these or will I have the desired company of my husband?" Pausing in step to peruse the tree, something sturdy and longstanding, she kept her hand in his and turned to face him where they stood. (d)
Kendrew: The Lord Campbell was the undisputed Lord of Land and the Lord of his home. He spoke with gentle tones, but firm. He listened, but was quick to redress when a thing was not safe who wholly thought through. In these matters of congenial balanced with a stern hand, some found dealing with him refreshing. Others, found it taxing. When he had a point he would not let it go! Liliana was the balm that soothed his ire, making him laugh if the seriousness became to heavy. She agreed with his logic and interjected her own. If any disputed her they found Kendrew was in fastidious agreannce with she on matters of the household and those therein. At the base of the tree, he'd nod. "Aye, the Lord Campbell shall have naught to do these three days but make his pleasure with his wife." He pulled her to sit in his lap, laughing all the while. "We will do nothing but take pleasure of one another, and of the season. I have a hope, too." He kissed the place where her neck began. "That we might fufill one
last part o' promise and a want of us both should it please ye." He grinned, nuzzling into her neck and wrapping both arms around her. Did the women goad her to present her case for children to him? Did the women also bid of them both to cease working so hard and long? Ah well, it was his idea to make peace of a season they married in but could hardly enjoy. "And not long after that we shall go to Turas Lan, and proceed to settle in the castle, for a visit, and for more portions o' nothing." (d)
Liliana: Enthusiasm was caught as she was pulled into his lap without resistance. Liliana was content to settle against her husband and share in his laughter. Though it was his words that caused the slightest stilling of her heart before it jerked into a faster beat. Oh, Lara and Donna both took the time to encourage the matter of child bearing. They were both quite vocal on their desires to increase the Campbell family. Liliana couldn't lie in that she'd thought on it often. Even now she could remember once upon a time laying with her husband, his hand on her stomach, and talking of their future. Of children with their features looking upon them. Though Liliana had both Roric and Kylie, and loved them dearly, she so desired to carry Kendrew's child and to look into its eyes to see them both. "Do you mean it?" She'd been patient though it was not like their bed was empty of pleasure. It just seemed the body was not yet ready to allow the conception of another. Liliana took advice on herbs and listened to the stories of women, and ways they suggested to succeed. The eagerness showed in the brightness of her brown eyes as they met his own gaze,"That would please me much, husband." Liliana's joy at the idea of a child overshadowed that brought on by a visit, but she would be most excited to visit Turas Lan again. (d)
Kendrew "Aye, I promise. There is naught twould please me more than to know within you is the best of us both, Liliana. We have what we would need to pass on to another heir. " He'd made sure Roric had enough funds put away, even now, so that he might build on the land when he was ready. Kiley too had land, funds, and a dowry when the time came ready for her to marry. All that was left was whom to pass what he prayed would be an ancestral house to. He rubbed at her belly, the hips of her comely figure and kissed her softly. "I wish to devote m'self to the effort," came the wicked grin before he laughed. "Tis a fertile land and people, and I think God will grant us this." They had been wed a little over a year now, and had endured marvelous much. (d)
Liliana The idea of either of the children marrying, or of the far off future that far, had not drifted into Liliana's mind. The matter of an heir was even less of concern. Moreso just the matter of a child of their making. Though the idea of passing the land they worked upon onto their children, and so on, had come to mind. It was a pleasing thought that here, in Skye, would be where they'd put down roots and build a family that would hopefully continue on for many centuries. Laughing softly, marveling at his touch, she whispered against his lips,"If you devote yourself anymore to the matter, husband, I might not be able to move for several weeks." Though it could be noted by her voice that Liliana did not terribly mind the idea. If there was one thing that Liliana would never be ashamed to admit it was that she very much enjoyed her husband's attentions. She could recall some women discussing the matter in her youth with distaste and now wondered how they could. Clearly their husbands were lacking or they, because Kendrew's was almost as if being lost amongst the stars. "I dearly pray he will, Kendrew." One hand lifted to cup his cheek and stroke it gently with her thumb. (d)
Kendrew"We bed with the same vigor we live. Naught wrong in it." He had thought of these things, of what he would give to Roric, what would be Kiley's on her own and what was fit to save for her marriage. Of what it would be to pass this life to another child. His mind was a furlow of matters. Kissing at her cheek, he growled playfully. "Speak ye that way three days shall become seven, we may well miss the Sabbath." He turned her about to face him, leaning his face into her offered touch as blind men do, merely remembering that it was indeed her hand that gave him succor. (d)
LilianaLaughing at his growl, she gladly sat in his lap and met his eyes with her own. There was mischief in their depths as lips pressed against his own then worked to his ear. Copperskin turned slightly red as she whispered, for his ears alone,"Do you truly think God would be displeased with us for missing the Sabbath? I think he would be understanding of our plight even if we took joy in our couplings." Liliana's lips curved into a smile that he'd be able to feel against his cheek where her lips touched against the skin there lightly. Settling back now, she sat there with an almost innocent expression upon her face considering what she'd just told him. Brown eyes moved slowly over his face,"Have I told you yet today, husband, that I love you? If not then let me say that to say it even once is never merely enough. You have given me...more than you will ever understand." Serious were her words as eyes met his own,"And you will give me far more as the years pass. We will remain as sturdy as this oak we sit by, God willing." (d)
Kendrew: "Now woman, we will miss a saint's day too if you begin thus! All Souls is not so far.." He muttered, letting his eyes close as she worked at his ear. Temptress! He laughed softly, only quieting when her tone became more serious as to deserve it. With a soft smile he nodded, "Aye, n' our sons and daughters, and their lineage, and so on, will sit here. Remembering that just as we do now. For we will go on for many, many years, you and I." He kissed her again, looking then to the sunset. "Mm..come. There is but one more piece of business to tend to, and then we will commence to sup." As he stood, he took her up into his arms (d)
"You, my husband, have not to blame for my sinful ways except yourself. Though I will make sure to pray devoutly to be cured of these most...unladylike thoughts." Parting lips on a giggle, she shook her head in wonder,"Aye, they will. Our family." There was an almost awe-like quality to the words. Throwing her arms around him in quick hug and gentle kiss to his lips, she went to stand only to find herself being lifted. "What do you do now? I am not a Princess to be carried for fear of dirtying her slippers. I wouldn't want you to put out your back on account of me." Teasing words as arms went about his neck to keep steady. Liliana knew though that her husband was in far better shape than most men his age. "What other business do we have to handle?" The mention of food was a most wonderful thought. Even now she could imagine the looks upon Lara and Donna's face as they gathered as a family to eat. They would know what was discussed this day without even needing to be told. (d)
Kendrew: "Telling the last man of Loch Awe to go home to Neil," he laughed with great pleasure at this bit of business working itself to his designs of peace. For the duration of a season and a half he would have no more business of the Black Campbell. All that could make the emigration had done so. He wore a bit of the family badge on his tunic, he dawned the plaid for certain occasions. The mantle of Kendrew Campbell was intact and that was all to be said of it. Strangely, what made Neil upset had been something of his own design. He wished a tanist that would carry out his designs, and thought to have found him in the fierce fighter at Dumfries, in the man who spat on the king's own mantle. He had not pictured Kendrew such a staunch loyalist or to have any to begin with, given he didn't even utilize his ancestral claim. For supper there would be no talk of him, only of the future, and of children. "You are finer than a princess. Our island has a fine royal court, and houses many heirs, yet you are better to me than princess or Queen, so saint, I lift you so your shoes do not get sullied." He grinned, kissing her as they walked. It was silly to carry her! Still, he wouldn't be denied, even swinging her about. (d)
Liliana: Brows furrowing, pleased by the idea as she knew that the man and Kendrew did not exactly see eye-to-eye, Liliana murmured,"Now Kendrew Campbell, you will be polite when you tell him to go home right? I wouldn't want him to return home with a story to tell that would have that man upon our doorstep." There was a firm tone to Liliana's words as he carried her. Kendrew may be Lord of the House, or think himself so, but any smart woman would agree that it was the women who were head of the household. She wouldn't want to have unpleasant company. Any man that thought to control her husband to his own whims fit into that category perfectly. If that were to happen well- she could not be blamed for her actions. Perhaps even close the door in his face and make him bed in the stables. Laughing as he swung her about, she clung more tightly to his neck and shook her head,"Ah, how I ever thought you to be an old man I shall never know. Your body plays one for the fool for within you are still quite a vigorous youthful man." Though it may be silly to carry, she did not terribly care. To be in his arms was most comfortable. "Kylie will be eager to sup so we must make quick work of this business. I won't be making her wait any longer than necessary." Laying head upon shoulder, she kissed his neck and smiled. (d)
Kendrew[b/]: "Yes, m'lady. It will be handled with grace and brevity." Kendrew made quick point on the world 'brevity.' He had neither been rude nor entirely giving to Neil's messangers after the fourth occurrence proved to be less than welcome company. It was becoming ridiculous. Did the man neither read or was in recitation he proved deaf? He wanted no part in the reclimation of lands in Argyll, nor would he denounce his alliance with Rosalind, nor would he do anything that would place Colban in a compromising posture. He found the insistance nearly maddening. Why, in this peace, was he so hell bent to continue a mission of foolishness for a few extra pieces of grace and stone? Once to the steps of their home he placed the Lady Campbell down. "Gather the women n' children, wife. I won't be long." He had no intention of allowing the man at his family table, either. He could eat what he was given where he was given it. (d)
Liliana: Well, at least one woman was already observing the approach of husband and wife with a gleam in her elderly eyes. It seemed that her planning had been well worth it! Donna was positive to be inside when they got closer where she could whisper with Lara. Both children, after finishing their help, had went outside for a bit of recreation. All children needed outdoor play to exercise their bodies and exhaust their energies for sleep at night. Liliana perused her husband's face then nodded her head,"That pleases me much. We will be waiting your return. I most eagerly." Standing down now, she smiled up at him and whispered,"For, if you would have it so husband, I wish to begin upon fulfilling that promise tonight. Do come home in one piece." Before he could have the chance to react to that little comment, she moved away nimbly to step on the porch and call out,"Kylie! Roric! Come wash up for dinner!" One could not doubt the presence of the children outside for their laughter filled the air and with a last heated smile in her husband's direction, she turned to head inside. (d)
Kendrew: "It shall take me only to the other end of our fine home, the journey shall find me returning in one piece, and with direct haste wife." He placed his hands behind his back as he journeyed opposite her. A glimpse of Donna's thick gray braid, and Lara's lighter hair masking her curious eyes brought his face to turn and smile to them. Plotting, devious women! He loved them so, and aye, loved the thought of fufilling his obligaions all the more! "As you so say, m'lady" his voice let forth a bit of the lusted undertones as he bowed to his ever bride before going to deal with the man of Loch Awe.
