Adam stood upon the balcony overlooking the crowd below. In one of the many speeches he would perform in the Gaelic renaissance over the next few years this one would heralded as his best on many the first of his downfall. Looking to Bess, he smiles, the looks to the crowd… Holding his hands aloft to quiet the crowd… he began to speak…
“People o’Skye… hark to mae for a few moments… Home is where Ah understand and where Ah am understood. Home is our sanctuary forged by safekeeping and devotion. For centuries, have been torn asunder and divided by war faring lords, devastating civilizations near and far. The Civil War has come to an end, and a new era for the Isle of Skye dawns… an era others have deemed the Renaissance of the Gaelic world.…
However, if we wish to preserve this homestead, to be the place of freedom, justice, and equality for all, it is imperative we form a nation and declare its sovereignty an independent state. Where common tongues, borders, and, political dreams reflect its unanimous population.
The tyranny shall not endure and hold under the knife its victims no longer! We must acknowledge the shifting nature of economics and security, put our country on sound economic footing that will stimulate prosperity, ideals and values we hold dear, and the increased globalization.”
His tone fluctuates with the intensity of his words… his sea-green eyes constantly searching the crowd’s faces for expressions… he pauses for the cheers of the crowd, his hands once again raised to calm them.
“To do this, there will be a call to regulate the importation and exportation of goods, as well as protectionism by means of customs tariffs. Develop larger towns, housing the townspeople who are dedicated to the betterment of life. People of Skye, I keep your security at heart! I will see to the protection of property, families, and your livelihood!
Decisions shall not simply be made to the interest of aristocracy and Estate of clergy. We recognize Clan Leaders as allies, called the 1st Estate. The 2nd Estate, namely the Bourgeoisie in the towns shall be representatives of these people shall see service and their worth recognized. The 3rd Estate shall be the Common, an assembly of thirty members, representatives from the districts of the Isles. Other representatives from alliances are welcomed as ambassadors of their countries.
I propose a government to you, with at its head, the Lord and Lady with dictatorial powers, as has been through the centuries by traditional feudalism, which shall be advised by a three-chambered parliament consisting of the before mentioned Estates. The Estates General, as this triple body shall be called, will act as advisors to the Crown.”
Again, his tone continues to fluctuate with the intensity of his words… his sea-green eyes constantly searching the crowd’s faces for expressions… pausing only for the cheers of the crowd, his hands once again raised to calm them.
“The Isles of Skye shall be unitized to maintain a strong and united military. Commanders shall be appointed …We shall not become a militarism government, but our philosophies and standards shall be set in accordance with our budget. Ah am also challenging those in charge of our military to develop more efficient ways to protect Skye. As a result, we are and shall be of the most powerful and efficient fighting forces in Europe and a nation to be reckoned with.”
Glancing to the Lord Marshal, he smiles and nods to his brother-in-law. Then returning his gaze to the crowd…
“While politics in Europe had always hinged on military might; religion, and politics, are becoming the driving force of the European state, dictating Crown, Church, and Religion. The ruler determined what the people would believe otherwise would be pursued and exterminated. And it was all part of a religious philosophy.
I believe this eventually led to vicious civil wars as people sought religious independence; henceforth, I am proclaiming Skye a safe haven for all religions, without persecution. But I am also dictating that there shall remain a separation of Church and State. Their financial support shall be from their constituents and none from government entities.”
Looking to the crowd, then he continues…
“We are a people of numerous cultures, ideals, religions, and ambitions…Ah am not asking you to give up traditions you have had since your fore-bearers."
He pauses… looks to Lady Eirian and smiles…
“Ah propose an attainable ideal, a trans-culturally-competent people. The process for realizing this ideal must take us beyond tradition. We must convince our residents to bring their knowledge of relationships within their own culture to the process of educating relationships across cultures here to Skye. The experience of doing so, especially as independent learners, opens up opportunities for acquiring a set of personal attitudes, social sensitivities, and intellectual skills that were rarely, if ever, realized before.
Hence I task the Lady Eirian Gwenyth Kushrenada to use her knowledge and skills to become an independent learner… to teach others to become trans-cultural and introduce these learners and teachers to the Hall of Guilds…
We must step outside of our own worlds and immerse ourselves in the worlds of others in order to explore their ways, in a wide range of conditions, live or have lived. Our objective is more modest: to cultivate a new way of viewing the world, and thus, understanding ourselves. We share a common humanity and transcendent realism with others.
We, the people of Skye, must concern ourselves with the human condition: what people are, what people do, and the problems that confront them. By charging individuals to investigate these matters among people in all places, they shall help us understand and respond to predicaments from something more than a parochial perspective. I ask for the betterment of education by and of the people, to develop a system of education. A child offered a simple phrase one day in regards to people… this I shall use as a theme… “All people are like all others, like some others, and like no other.”
For Skye to grow, our development is guided… that human nature our primary identity, one more fundamental than any particular identity forged on the basis of a person’s nationality, race, gender, or society. All people are of equal value and deserving of fair recognition, mutual respect, humane treatment, and equal opportunities for self-realization. Part of this respect is accorded to the natural creative capacity of people — their potential — distinct from anything they may make of it or is capable of making of it.
Amidst the diversity of cultural expression, we share common potential and experience. From here, we discover the ways that others make sense of their world. In so doing we expand the range of alternative mores and manners, values and visions that are available to us for running our lives.
We are inescapably marked by the particularities of the circumstances in which we are born and raised. At the root of each person’s capacity for forming and defining their own identity lies the complex interplay between self and community. Individuals are never reducible to the social circumstances in which they develop but are indelibly marked by them.
Ah, as Lord o’ the Isles, wish to usher Skye thru an era of intense economic, political and cultural change, and allow even those of us who may never leave home the chance to think of ourselves in new, unfixed way.
Ah hope the people of Skye shall be one day recognized as a “new people,” that arises out of the old character formed through our past, to represent what is true, right and good, and then to make it the standard by which all else is judged; to demonstrate a genuine interest in others and their ways of life as potential sources of companionship, wisdom, and collaboration.
Conflicts between groups result, to a large extent, from social and cultural disregard. Where extreme imbalances of economic, cultural and political power exist, groups that perceive themselves the victim rarely remain still and silent.
Political and economic dilemmas can only be adequately addressed through people and decrees that recognize that our destinies are intertwined, and that choices to harm our neighbor actually end up harming ourselves.”
He smiles to Aislin, as she is next up to be identified.
“And last but not least… Ah have decreed that the Court Physician, Lady Aislin Creed of Sevenwaters head the effort to bring better, and proper medical care to Skye… and that all people shall be able to reap the benefits of health.”
His hands held over the people of Skye as to demonstrate his guidance, instead of reign over the people…
“Thank you… Long Live the Isles of Skye…”
Then he turns and heads back into the chambers, a trickle of sweat rolls off his brow… he stops and looks at Bess when she entered… a dim look upon his face… “Sae wet dae ye think m’heart?”
