Willa walked easily enough through the crowd with the few coin her father had allowed her. Though it was not for such frivolities as ribbons and bolts of cloth. No, it was more such things as lye and things of necessity. Though she stood staring at a lovely dress in a seamstress window. The young woman sighed as she lifted her fingers to touch the glass that separated herself and the finery.
It wasn't until her hand slipped away and she turned to finish her shopping did the young woman catch a glimpse of one of the other girls from the small area village. The instant smile appeared on her lips as she and the other set a coarse to wards each other. Mary's hair was bound up in the serviceable knot as the newly married blush still seemed to linger about the young woman's features.
" Mary! Thank the heavens I feared I'd be roamin about this fer hours alone. " She declared as the girls embraced then stepped away Mary giggled softly as she shook her head.
" Tosh, Thomas is speaking business over somethin or another.. " she waved a hand not even wanting to try and understand the inner workings of a man's mind. Willa smiled and would have pressed for more.. but the girls were quite the opposite in such things. Willa wanted to know and Mary was content to be blind ..
" So ya have the af'ernoon free? " She inquired as the other nodded and smiled brightly . So it was arm in arm the pair would walk through the crowd of people.
" Do ya like bein married?" Willa asked quietly as Mary shrugged before talking.
" If I didn't, wouldn't matter much now anyways.. though Thomas is a good man.. gentle when he has ta be.. otherwise too busy to notice if I'm breathin or not. " She chuckled softly.
" Sounds.. " well.. sounded rather dull and honestly she had that at home with her father.
" It isn't as bad as ya think.. anyways whats goin on back home? " The girl asked, though there was something in her tone that made Willa look at her from the corner of her eye.
" Well, Molly got herself inta a right pickle.. ya remember she was seein that Miller's son? The one that was courtin Tilly? " she began with the gossip as the girls seemed as thick as thieves. Whispering and giggling over the latest and greatest of village gossip and hearsay.
"Don't tell me they finally got caught? " Mary gasped as Willa nodded with wicked little grin .
" Aye.. that they did.. ya see they was a foolin about in the barn at his Da's house.. an seems someone went an tol' Miss Tilly that her beau was a dallyin with a certain lass. An heavens above Mary.. did ya miss a full out battle right there. Molly was a cryin as Tilly drugged her out by her hair .. barely dressed she was as Tilly shoved her right down inta the pigs mud. " She stated with a light hearted laughter.
" Oh I bet that Shawn wanna happy about all this... " The darker haired girl spoke up as Willa shook her head .
" Oh no, not at all.. though he was havin himself a time gettin himself dressed.. he stormed out in front of the two.. Molly cryin and Tilly screechin.. folks standing about watching. He thought he was gonna try an take both lasses in hand.. but oy and fishes.. Tilly dun turned that anger on him.. bashed him hard in the small bits leavin them both a cryin.. as if that wanna enough , then all them parents gots involved. " She was giggling lightly as she pointed out to one merchant the soap and such she needed. Mary was a near scarlet as she shook her head trying to imagine all of the excitement.
" What of you Willa..yer Da been lookin fer a suitable husband fer ya? " Mary broke through all of the babbling as Willa stood silent for a long moment.
" No. Nor would I want him ta.. nawt that there be anythin wrong wit all that.. jus.. I wanna does more then jus spit out babies and all. Asides. ya heard the whisperin.. about.. ya know.. " She leaned in closer to whisper the words. " another war acomin.. "
Mary's smile faltered as she glanced around to ensure that none had heard the girl as she looked at Willa. " Mind yerself Willa. " She spoke quietly and gave her a tug back into the crowd of people, "Thats men's business.. " She insisted as Willa rolled her eyes
" Aye wella when there be soldiers trompin through yer flower gardens an upsettin yer home. ya goes an tell em then.. be men's business. "She stated a little more sharply then she had meant to. Mary stared at her blankly.. Willa had to remind herself this wasn't back in Rome.. they didn't know.. never saw.. Willa shook her head and sighed. " Come on.. tell me.. whut was the weddin night like? " She changed the subject as Mary flushed a brilliant red.. leaving to two to giggle and gossip.
Though in the back of Willa's head.. she worried, what if they called her Da back into the army.. what if things went like the did back in the old country.. what if....
