Nairne: Those words spoken by Alendral stayed with Nairne, slipping through her mind to be thought upon through the course of the night and over the days to come after. She had, of course, returned the book the very night of taking it from the library. It seemed that as Nathan hadn't come pounding on her door, pointing finger and tossing accusation, that he had not remembered any of it. Not that it meant she felt any better about what she'd had to do. Though it'd be something to come to terms with considering what Alendral and her had discussed. Nairne, it seemed of late, was finding it harder to shield the fact that inside her did actually beat a heart. Heading downstairs, wearing a simple white blouse and tan skirt, something unusual and comfortable, hair down and not for any artful purpose, she was actually going to the library to find a new book. The ones she'd had upstairs were finished and held in her hands. Pushing open the door of the library, she peeked inside quietly and wondered if Nathan was inside, or out doing work.
Nathan: Turns out Nate was, though not for the reasons she described. If there were any lingering fears that Nate remembered that fateful night, the look on her face was almost strangely similar to the night before, an awkward, uneasy look. It did its magic just she imagined--he remembered the old, faintly shy Nairne as a dream and nothing more, and there was no harsh look of accusation. However, markedly different from work, he was actually packing a few things away. Could she have driven him away in shame or fright? Pushed too hard. "Oh... Oh, Hello there Lady Adair." his face flushed and he averted his gaze from the woman nearly instantly, busying himself with picking up a few things.
Nairne: Honestly, Nairne was a bit worried. There were never any guarantees in life. Sometimes things went not as planned and bit you in the ass. Yet, it seemed that Nathan did not remember. Except indigo eyes took in the fact that he was actually packing some belongings which made one slim brow raise as the door was closed behind her. Holding the books still before her, against her stomach, she gave a gentle smile,"Good evening, Nathan." Nairne couldn't bring herself to refer to him as bookworm or anything else mean at the moment. Wandering further inside, just past him and toward a shelf to place the books back upon, she murmured casually,"Are you leaving us?" Glancing back over her shoulder, blowing sable strands out of her face that was obscuring her view, she began placing the books in their spots.
Nathan: "Huh...?" The poor woman was guilt ridden, but Nate would only see the exterior, the idle curiousity of wondering if her plaything was still going to be around. "No, no. I'm just... I've been asked to stay in the castle for my.. work for the High Scholar, so I'm moving out of the Guard house. So I'm leaving a few things with the office, just so I don't have to carry them around. " he responded breezily. He wouldn't of course tell her that the reason he moved was someone tried to threaten his life. He didn't want to alarm anyone first off, and he was just as worried that it would lose him his job, which he valued enough to keep. He waved his hand a little bit and smiled, ever awkwardly. "Can I help you?" he was nothing if not polite.
Nairne: Well, that was a good reason. At least it wasn't due to any of the harassing of the girls. Herself included at times. Smiling softly, she'd tease,"Well, it will be nice to have the library again. Always having to read in my room has become a trifle dull. I think my room needs a change..." Finally finishing putting each of the books back in their place, bothered to no end if they were out of order, she glanced back toward the shelves and considered some of the titles. It was his question that made her pause with one finger on the bind of a brown leather book, and turn to look at him,"Oh, no no. I was just finished with my other books. Though now I have not a clue what to read."
Nathan: "Yeah... Yeah, suppose it would, though honestly I dont' see many who come in here." he admitted honestly enough. Nairne was the only one. Feeling the need to help her despite himself, he'd rise from his chair and very tenatively approach her, though the hesitance in getting to closer to her was painfully obvious and caused a great deal of mirth to the woman. Folding his hands behind him as he inspected the book she thumbed through. "Ah, well... I might recommend that one, if you were to ask my opinion, though I'd have to know what you were in the mood for before I could give you anything else." One had to wonder why Nathan was being so nice to the woman--even he had forgotten the last time, she had practically cornered him in the time that he remembered. Of course, Nate was keenly aware of it too, and until the woman up and played at her tricks again, he probably wouldn't make a big deal of it. He was always up to giving the woman a second chance. Than again, he was keeping the woman well out of arm's reach, it would seem.
Nairne: It was interesting to note that Nathan didn't seem as jittery around her this evening. Nairne couldn't figure out why, but was extremely curious. It would be something to tuck away and analyze later. "Not unless it's being used for...reasons other than reading." That had one corner of her mouth quirking upward. She could still remember the noises that came from here during one evening of business. Flipping through the book, noting his approach, she actually didn't say anything rude presently. Instead indigo eyes lowered to the book with consideration,"A mystery most like. I've had enough of the educational reading that Shaden requires us Courtesans to do. One more book on horse breeding and I may just toss myself out of my bedroom window." Ah, joking, now that was different. Book was placed back upon the shelf as she moved further down, closer to him and yet not on purpose. "Are you pleased with being a guest at the castle?"
Nathan: "Uh.. well, that's... it's just what circumstances require. Frankly I'm indifferent to it." He shrugged moderately at the idea, smiling a bit despite himself. "Can't blame you for that. You won't believe some of the drivel I had to read back at the Monastary. If I hear one more dissertation on the subject of the Holy Trinity, I think I may just renounce my faith utterly to spite them. " he shook his head and grinned just a fraction before seemingly forcing himself to search for a better book. In truth, if Nate was even subtly aware of the fact he wa sa bit more at ease around her, he'd be at a loss to explain it. Perhaps some small part of him remembered her kindness just as the drug took effect... or perhaps he was just being polite. "But it beats staying at the Guardhouse, I can tell you that. The lot of them snore.. and well. They gossip, a lot. It's rather irritating." he shook his head irritably and pulled a book from the shelf, offering it for her perusal. "How about this one, then?" he gave her another warm smile then.
Nairne: Nairne was now making ideal conversation. She wasn't fishing for anything. If he had remembered anything of consequence then it'd have revealed itself by now. His comment had laughter sparking in the depths of indigo eyes as her smile widened a little,"I imagine that reading those must be more interesting than horse breeding though. I could not imagine having to make conversation about such a matter with a client. Of course, I suppose it does help if they are in that business." One hand lifted in a graceful movement, tucking strands behind an ear, as she took the book he offered with the other, perusing it quietly now. "What is it about?" Lifting her gaze briefly, curious to know why he recommended it, she'd wait silently.
Nathan: "Oh quite tawdry. Intrigue, affairs and murder in the courts of London. Surprise she even has something like this. Right up your alley really--ah," he blushed slightly. "That may have come out wrong." and realizing how ridiclious it was to say something to someone who had just recently quipped about her own client, he broke out into a small laugh. "Even so, I can't imagine them so eager to rush in and discuss business--oh..! Oh, lord, there I go.. I'm sorry, I'm really usually not like this." the reason for it? Frayed nerves. There was something about nearly being murdered that eased the fear of the small stuff. he smiled, genuine but awkward, and shrugged his shoulders a bit again. "Anyway, kept me interested during long days traveling, so if nothing else it will pass the time."
Nairne: This was a different side indeed. That he actually even brought up a client before realizing what he was doing had Nairne's smile widening more. Though inwardly her mind wandered what had changed. What had happened? It couldn't have been what she'd done if he didn't remember. Most curious. Yet, she couldn't resist the urge to laugh softly,"Oh, don't apologize! You are not offending me. I've had people say worse things." Playfully winking at him as she looked down at the book again. "I think I will choose this one then since it comes so highly recommended." Turning it over in her hands idly now. Hmmm what to do, what to do, now oddly enough she was the one feeling slightly awkward.
Nathan: Well that was wonderful. normally Nate had the market cornered on awkwardness. sensing the tension--though given her earlier behavior, he could scarcely believe it, he managed an uneasy smile, taking it exactly the wrong way. "Oh... Listen.. ah.. about earlier." Of course, this was all new to Nate. "I looked at the numbers again.. apparently I just.. ah.. misunderstood.. well.." he blushed. didn't realize you and Moira entertained the same client just couldn't be said, even if strangely light under his near death experience. "I misunderstood. So, there isn't anything to worry about. " and taking the awkwardness as a cue to go, he started to pull away to return to his work. "Ah.. so, sorry..."
Nairne: Ah, well, that was a clue that he didn't remember. Nairne had to admit that it was probably expected for her to be huffy over it. Yet, she'd changed some. When had it happened? Perhaps after the attack out in the field. She hadn't taken any clients while arm healed, stayed mostly in her room, and it seemed that she was indeed different inwardly. Though she wasn't inclined to acknowledge it right now. "It was a misunderstanding and I should not have reacted in such a manner. I owe you an apology if anything." Ah, now that would likely shock. Spoken softly and honestly. When Nathan turned to go back to work, apologizing, Nairne shook her head and reached out one hand to grab his shirtsleeve. "No, no, it is perfectly fine. You didn't do anything."
Nathan: She certainly surprised him, he stared at her like she'd practically grown a second head, unsure how to respond. "Oh.. it's..I mean.. you were just... you were worried about your job, of course. I shouldn't have threatened you." if what she said surprised him though, what she could have very well made him faint. He felt her fingertips brush his sleeve and tigthen on the fabric and his head practically whipped the other direction. He literally didn't know how to react, and hovered, uncertainly on the spot. He was about to make another appeasement, but something else dropped. Of course, Nathan wasn't really in any place to judge about it, but it was just something, gnawing at him about her. "...Lady Adair... is something wrong?" he tilted his head, genuine concern etched into his expression despite the sum of their meeting. "...Well, I..I admit that I don't know, but.. are you...?"
Nairne: "And you were only doing yours. If I'd had a concern then I should have seen to handling it in a more mature fashion." Hah, that was quite amusing coming from her, considering she could be quite immature at moments. Yet, it was true nonetheless. Not to mention she kind of felt bad considering what she knew that he never would. Seeing his reaction to the grabbing of his sleeve, she dropped her hand quickly and brought it back to help hold the book in her other one. The question and the look upon his face was quite endearing. Smiling softly, she'd give a light shrug,"You know what they say about making amends. Perhaps that it is what I am trying to do. People can change, can't they?" She truly wondered about that. Could a person change? Nairne hadn't always been the way she was nor what she was. She'd had a childhood, carefree and happy and innocent, like most others had.
Nathan: "Well... I should hope so. No, scratch that, I believe it to be true." He continued to smile while he considered the subject, always eager to talk about human nature in the speculative sense. Or perhaps just to talk about anything other than relating to himself. "I've met my share of people Lady Adair. Those who found God, those who renounced God. Who found love or lose love... You spend your life struggling to come to grips with your own shortcomings.... then one day you open your eyes and well...there's the world. " he smiled awkwardly again and scratched the back of his head. Of course, Nathan thought she meant amends for their previous encounter--he perhaps would not have been so forgiving if he knew what she erally meant to make amends for. "but really, Nairne.... consider it water under the proverbial bridge.. Honestly, I'm so terrible at first impressions that I'll be all too happy to let it slide between us, if you'd rather."
Nairne: Water under the proverbial bridge...That was what he'd said last night. If he only knew. What she was feeling guilty for nothing would ever make amends for. The man would likely never speak to her again or blow up at her, or...well tell. Any of which was not a likeable idea. Considering the fact that Nathan wasn't too bad. Perhaps, in hindsight, she'd just changed so horribly and became as ugly as she'd always tried not to be. It was a thought. "Then there is hope for me yet." Smiling at him, she'd nod,"I'd like that. Start off on a better foot so to speak?"
Nathan: "A new start it is, then, Lady Adair." to which he shrugged and smiled cheerily, willing to forget just how uncomfortable she saw fit to make him. squirm in their first meeting. Perhaps she could never tell him.. or perhaps he may be able to forgive her even then. For all his social ineptitude, for all his silliness, Nathan was one who waited to judge a person by their true character; he knew that would take time. "Honestly though, tell me what you think when you finish that. I always enjoy hearing other perspectives on such literature. " he smiled again and peered out a bit, taking a bit of a breath. Now he felt a strange need to ease the woman's tension a little--oh the irony of turnabout. He started to glance about. "I think I could go for a little fresh air, how about you?"
Nairne: "I will come find you as soon as I am finished. Even if I have to storm the castle." A teasing smile as some of her tension eased, though guilt would always linger inside for what she'd done to him. Nathan wasn't a horrible person and that made it all the worse. Though to be forgiven on at least one issue was enough for now. Not that he could ever forgive her for the other so a minor comfort. His suggestion about fresh air brought a smile and she laid the book down on a table near her. "I will come back for it. A walk then? Fresh air sounds lovely." She hadn't been out and about much so it'd be pleasant. Not to mention the chill of the night air would be welcome.
Nathan: Well that seemed pleasant enough. the two of them would begin to walk leisurely towards the grounds' garden, as eager to face the chill air. as with so many things in the Lily, the garden was beautiful, with subtle shades brought forward under the night sky. of course, it was also cold enough to bring color to the Scholar's cheeks, as well as seeming to cheer the young lad. "Ahh~!. I rather like the cold. Reminds me of home. Is that... strange?" he broke into a rictus of a grin and glanced at her. "Kind of ironic really. Spend your whole life in England absolutely loathing the cold and dreaming of warmer climates, than your away for a while and all you miss is the fresh chill of a cool winter night... though.. I must admit, it is a bit colder here." He was chatting nervously again. the woman was intimidating him, but in a particularly different way, the mere low burn of a man who wasn't entirely comfortable in his own skin.
Nairne: Winter's chill upon the air was welcome as they stepped into the garden, a sight brought out in its beauty by the silver light of the moon. It was wondrous to Nairne and she didn't mind looking upon it. Of course, most didn't spend their time out here too often. Yet, Shaden did like to entertain guests, not necessarily clients, here when it was warmer. Looking over at Nathan, indigo eyes only lit whenever light hit them, she'd laugh softly,"Oh no, I have to say that if I went somewhere warmer I'd be lost. I did not grow up here, but I've always lived in Scotland. A change of atmosphere would have me wishing to come back." She could honestly say that never had she wished to be somewhere else. This was home and the idea of living someplace else was anathema. "Do you miss England?" Looking away from him, letting her gaze roam the garden as they walked, Nairne's hands were clasped at her waist. She wasn't one to leave her arms just hang as it felt odd. Most would likely find that weird of her.
Nathan: "No... well, yes. Parts, yes, but I've been away from it so long it hardly feels like home anymore. " He searched the stars for answers, chuckling bemusedly as he went in circles. he let his gaze fall than and glanced sidelong at her. "There are parts. I miss, sometimes. Even the monastary. But it wasn't ever supposed to be home for me. Then dear old dad, well, he thought he saw an opportunity for more.. well, whatever silly nobility needs so much more of, and next thing I know the great Renquest family name is well. Less. Ever since then I've been traveling. England's no more home for me than anywhere else... but..." He frowned, losing his way again and glancing in her direction before shrugging. "I remember those days as easier. Innocence of childhood and all that. So I'm fond of it. " He let his gaze trace upward again. "Must be nice though, I mean, growing up here. At least as I imagine it. You were born here, weren't you?"
Nairne: It seemed that Nathan was human just like anyone else. That she'd teased him so horridly was not right. Nairne had lost her way on alot in life. "I know what you mean about the innocence of childhood. At times I miss that more dearly than anything." A soft statement that came as she looked up at the stars in contemplation while they wandered the paths. Looking down and over at him, she'd nod her head, the movement making curls slightly fall from behind her ear to slip along her cheek. "I did. Though Skye feels more like home to me even if I wasn't pleased when I first arrived here. Sometimes though good comes out of the bad. I guess that is what happened." Smiling softly, amusement in her gaze,"I used to romp in streams and get scolded for being damp in chill air as a child. I never did learn to listen though."
Nathan: "Seems like it'd be a good place to grow up. " he tilted his head, idly studying the young woman's expression, surprised to see such a different side of the young woman. The realization caused a flicker of doubt, and with it his experssion became distant. Why did this sensation feel so familiar? the cadence of her voice, suddenly light, snapped him from it and he turned to glance her way. "Somehow I can believe that." lord, could he say anything without sticking his foot in his mouth? "Ah, I didn't mean it that way. I just meant you seem to be... headstrong. I mean. I got that impression from the first time I met you. " And yet the nuance behind that comment passed completely without incident. "But I like to believe that sometimes the best things to happen in our lives come from the things that seem the darkest at the time." he shrugged again. "You seem it, now. Happy I mean. " he smiled sincerely, whimisical with exaggerated steps as he kept pace with her. "Going to be hard, I think. When I eventually say goodbye. to the island."
Nairne: One thing about Nairne was that she had a keen gaze and to say that she saw the distant look appear on his features was an understatement. Yet, he seemed to snap out of it quick enough. His comment brought an amused light into her indigo gaze as she laughed softly,"I know what you mean. I take no offense to it. I was never one to conform to the image of what others believed I should be. Though my profession is amusing as in a way I am required to do that everytime I have a client." A simple, casual comment that was given like discussing a gown chosen for the day. "I am happy, I think. I haven't been for some time now. I sometimes wonder why, but refuse to question it for fear it might go away." Yet, it was his words that had a brow lifting,"Oh? Is that what you were thinking of a moment ago?" Realizing how that'd sound, she continued a bit embarassed,"I saw that you seemed to not quite be here for a moment earlier..."
Nathan: "Uh... yes. That." a lie, and a bad one at that, but he was more comfortable with it than saying I had a dream about you once. he rolled his eyes lightly, his face flushing as he found himself confessing a however-small bit of himself to the woman who had formerly put the fear of something into him. (or at least made him uncomfortable in some fashion, even it was exciting in its own bizarre fashion). "I just.. I've never been to a place quite like Skye. it's.. well, it's amazing. I've never seen so many people so... deeply satsified. Not just happy or pleased. Everybody's happy with themselves to a certain extent--they have to be. But I just.... I meet everyone and I get the impression they are truly home. It's... it's rare. I admit a certain fondness for it. " he grew distant again, dreamlike at the musings of the island, a sincereity undeniable. but it ended, like all things, with a deep steadying breath. "But there will be a time. The road calls, the quest for knowledge... well, that and my employer will doubtless ask me to go god-knows where. Still... I think I'm really going to miss this place..."
Nairne: That response was taken at face value and not questioned. Nairne had no reason not to believe him. There'd been no hint that he recalled anything to make her concerned. Yet, as he talked, she felt a sense of similiarity and understanding. At that moment Nairne knew exactly what he meant. That was how she had felt when first coming here. She'd hated it until she saw how it affected people and then it'd begun to have that same one on her. "I do not believe there is another place quite like it." She took note of his expression, the breath taken before he spoke again, and felt sorrow for him. He truly did like it here. "When did you think your employer will require you to leave?" A question of curiousity more than anything.
Nathan: "When he's satsified, I suppose. I've never met the man. " he shrugged again and stopped, sticking his hands in his jacket pockets. Despite his earlier praise, the cold was starting to get to him. "I never could figure out the man. Sometimes I'm only in a place for a few weeks, once he had me writing for the better part of a year. Honestly I might stay around afterwards until he has another place.. but..." he shrugged. "I don't want to sound too ungrateful. He was the one who funded me to get me out of the monastary in the first place, and he's put up with me ever since. I wouldn't be anywhere if he didn't." he shrugged. The merchent he kept in contact with was always an enigma, despite their working relationship. he rather hoped he'd get to know the man better, if nothing more than to satsify his curiousity, but he was.. nothing if not private. "Oh well. nothing but our memories in the end, right? " he turned and peered at the woman a moment before flashing her a warm, nostalgic smile. when he left, he thought, this would be one of many memories that he'd find comfort with.
Nairne: A wrap nor cloak had been grabbed before coming outside and though her blouse had long sleeves, and her skirt was somewhat heavy, the cold was beginning to cut through. Especially since it seemed the wind picked up a little bit. It played with her hair, swirling about her face at times though she didn't mess with it, and to keep warm she wrapped her arms across her chest. Hands were tucked under each arm to keep them warm. Listening to him, smiling at his own nostalgia, she'd murmur,"At times, yes, it is. Though we must not forget that sometimes memories are not always enough to sustain a person."
Nathan: "Oh?" he tilted his head curiously to Nairne again, curious to hear the woman's interpretation of what else might be needed, whilst making his way back inside. It was getting late, and though he found himself strangely enjoying the woman's company, keeping her out all night wasn't precisely what he had in mind. "It's getting late... we.. should probably get back." Oh lord, there he went again. His face flushed, already knowing the opening the woman would take with that little innocous statmeent. "That is to say.. you, go back to where you stay and I... go back to my home. I didn't.. " he cleared his throat. "Well, you know, don't fraternize.. Not that I would...! Oh... god. Look at me, you're not even trying this time and I'm tongue-tied in your presence." he shook his head and let the red spread full across his face and dissipate again. "So, what does Lady Adair think a man or woman really needs to sustain a person?"
Nairne: "Memories can't keep you warm at night..." Trailing off, looking away from him toward the night sky briefly, she caught his words as they turned to head back inside. Indigo gaze lowered, a soft smile curving her lips as he stammered and explained while his face reminded her of the shade of a gown she had upstairs. Such a red that it amazed her to watch it fade away. "Do you think I would seduce you upon stepping inside?" Raising a brow, she laughed, realizing how that could sound and shook her head,"Not that you aren't appealing. You're sweet and not too bad to look at if I must say so." There was a teasing quality to her voice to possibly help him not get so blushy over it. Of course, it wasn't likely to help. "Plus you'd like turn me down, alas, seeing as how you deserve a much better woman than I am." Giving him a gentle smile, she walked at his side as they headed back in. Thinking on his question, she murmured,"Sometime you need more than memories. They are wonderful to have, but...they grow cold and stale, and it is not always healthy to look back upon the past. Love, friendship, and looking to the future is something that can always be found to sustain ones soul better. I think so anyways."
Nathan: "That's very poetic... I... rather like it." he smiled again, his face flushing red again at the compliment, bowing his head. He wnated to say something pleasing back, but couldn't muster up quite the courage to do so. Perhaps he was surprised to catch the note of low value, the lack of confidence that surprised even him. The woman seemed so... sure of herself. She had to be to play at him that way. surprisingly, he found her in strangely human light again.. and with it that sense of familiarity creeped in again, though damned if he knew why. 'Lady Adair... maybe I make an observation? " he fidgeted slightly, shutting one eye and stepping to the doorway. "I... confess that I have not really met a woman.. well.. direct as you. It's.. something of a new experience to me in a lot of ways. but... I like to think of myself as a good judge of character. " he turned slightly to her, opening the doorway that lead back indoors to her with a bit of a flourish. "And... ah.. how do I put this? " he suddenly grew nervous. the very act of complimenting her was like pulling teeth for the lad. "I... suspect, there's far more to you inside than you want people to see. and you go to great pains... to... well, well to see ... the.. ah, woman I first met." he skittered to the point. "But... when I look at you now? I don't see that woman. and..." he held up a finger and tried to look confident when he said it. "Well... I think that woman could be someone... well, wonderful." and now he just felt stupid. That was his big point? Lord, he was an idiot. He shut his eyes again and looked positively moritifed. "Sorry.. that... sounded a lot better inside my head than out of it. Ah... but honestly though. Thank you... for the company tonight. I.. well, things have been sort of trying today. I appreciate it."
Nairne: If anyone knew her true confidence level at times they'd be shocked and awed. Nairne questioned alot, especially of late, about what she was like and what people thought of her. How some could do better. Tibby for example. Nairne knew that she should be more confident, but in truth- as much as she defended the position- sometimes she truly did feel like nothing more than a whore. Except she was a whore playing at being a lady. Pausing as they came to the door, which he opened, she stared with curiousity at him. Just what he said though was the sweetest thing she'd ever heard though. It was a kind statement that she'd tuck away to remember, and made her flush just a bit herself. Stepping forward, as if to slip inside, she came to a brief stop right by him. "Thank you...Nathan...for that. Perhaps this night will be a memory worth looking back upon." Before thinking upon it or giving him a chance to scurry off, she placed a quick kiss to his cheek and gave a soft smile as she finally stepped inside. Turning to face him, she murmured,"Thank you for the company as well. It was much more pleasing than sitting alone in my room again. I hope I have helped to ease some of the stress from your day."
