Greetings Fellow Storytellers!
The Allowances as per advancements is a key component of the Island basis. Why? Because your character may be witness to things that while done in the later middle ages, may not have been seen in other settings. We will be continuing the experience of the Highlands advancing in cultural achievements that the South of Scotland is more known for, thus, the Island stands out. A few of the things are as follows:
Architecture: There is a tremendous amount of Gothic architecture noted in the pictures, as well as the style of thatching that became familiar around our time period, and was best furbished toward the later end of the 14th century. Our streets are cobblestoned and stone bricks placed together, and the city moves on a linear, blocked gradiant moving upward, down, in risen and lowering levels. The use of glass in windows is prevalent, along with wooden shutters. There are two clock towers in the city: one tells time by the hour, and the second, the Templar clock, tells time by the month and astrological cycles of the stars.
Art: I will say that besides the classical medieval style (i.e. Bayeux Tapestry) there is a prevalance of individuality that will allow an artisan character to imagine things of near Renaissance proportion. Enjoy and blossom is the theory. The castle's, stained glass windows, gardens, heraldry banners, etc are examples of civic beautification while individual artisans are encouraged to thrive in Turas Lan.
Engineering: For one thing, architecture is the fruit from the feat of engineering that allows Turas Lan to be constructed as it is. War weaponry will be another example of engineering.
Science: Alchemists were the forefathers of chemists, and hopefully we will find people in Skye who will study plants, animals, etc, etc.
Weaponry and the Military: Here is a large one: On the island of Skye, the military will be exposed to the use of period cannons! Yes, cannon warfare was used during this era and if you read wikipedia's listing by typing in the word cannon, you will be amazed. Cannons will be mounted on stands for multi manned use, larger ones moved on linked wagons. They will become a part of the Griffin Fleet in an alternative history move that would make a floating, heavy artillery armada by way of rigging the upper deck or the lower to support a small number of cannons. If people visiting pass through have mounted cannons ala the Age of Ships (Renaissance England -- 1800s) on their ships we will acknowledge it, though in Skye we will not their style of weapon. Flintlock carrying individuals are acknowledged, though in Skye there will be no possession of such weapons by any character.
